In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

A book about women spies during WWI. One always hears about Mata Hari, but there were many more women who were spies for the British during the war to end all wars. The book tells the story of one such woman and also a young woman who is searching for a relative that lived in France during WWII and how their paths cross. I would highly recommend the book for anyone interested in either war, strong women and the tragedy of war.
Beautifully written about women in resistance during WWII
I was hooked from page 13 with the words: “I heard a pistol being cocked. Her voice was low and graveled, slurred, ferocious. ‘Who are you, and what the bloody fuck are you doing in my house?'”
Amazing historical fiction with a powerful fast-paced story. Kate Quinn’s characters are quirky, believable and courageous. The story races over two world wars, two continents and decades before a murderous revenge completes the tale of betrayal and deception.
I had no idea what to expect when I started this book. It grab me and took me by surprise. So glad that this was our November book club read.
I must admit, I haven’t finished this novel (it’s a thick book!). But what I’ve read so far: wonderful characterization; based on history; exceptionally well written; well edited (important to me); and difficult to put down. I would highly recommend.
Easy to read and very entertaining.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t put it down.
Very few books moved me as this one did. Kate Quinn’s writing, her characters, and the authenticity of this work of fiction are all part of the reason that I love her work. When I finished the book, I felt so proud to be a woman. The characters,
although they were fictional, represented real life war heroes who were so unbelievably brave. They committed their lives to the ultimate cause of freedom, and how is it that we know so little about these women? I have recommended this book to many people, and all of those who have read it, have raved about the author and the story. Please read this book, and if you are like me, you will be so sad at “the end”. I hated saying goodbye to the characters!
Juliet Blackwell adds historical information about an object in a terrific story line. This book takes you into the creating of carousels prior to World War I. Book switches from the present day main day main character to the people involved in commissioning the creating of the carousel in the early 1900’s.
One of the best books I have read
based on true characters….this book is hard to put down
Amazing read. Well worth it. I loved this book. Characters are well developed and the story is full of emotion.
Based on a true character the book left me wanting more information on this subject. The writing was able to easily place the reader in the place and time.
Great book about women’s role during WWII. real life with fictional characters added. Highly recommend.
I love historical fiction, this was a book that once you start reading you can’t put it down. The characters in this book were heroes and what they did for the war effort was so amazing. I highly recommend this book. I would give it a 5+ Star rating!!
The author pulls you into the lives of the main characters. Well written, and well researched. It was hard to put this book down.
Reeling. That’s what this book set me to. It was charming, harrowing, exciting, heartbreaking, raw, fascinating. Beautifully written, I was spellbound by these characters and their story, unable to disentangle myself from the words, lying awake in bed thinking about it long after I had turned out the light. Halfway through the book, The Alice Network pivoted on its heel mid-emotion and hauled me sideways into one of the most devastating passages I’ve ever encountered. I wept. Not merely misty-eyed but enormous tears dripping off my chin for such a soul-wrenching scene — a scene ripped right from actual history which made it all the worse.
That is the summation of this book though. Caught me unawares, unprepared for everything I would feel for Charlie and Finn, Eve and Lili and Rose. This book left me with emotional whiplash and I mean that in the best possible way. The conclusion was as perfectly constructed as everything that led up to it. I feel wrung out but fortunate. 2018 has placed some truly magnificent books into my hands and this one resides near the very top. Kate Quinn, your story moved me to my very core.
I thought this book was fabulous and couldn’t put it down. I had no idea is was a historically accurate work of fiction. I would highly recommend reading it!!
Historical fiction at its best
I love the way the author referenced with real time events in history to the plot. Getting to know the characters was special and they were the ones that kept you turning pages. I did not want this book to end.
Hold your interest to the very last page. Could not put down. Author did a fantastic job to keep the reader guessing up to the end. Loved it!
