In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

I always love reading about strong women in historical contexts, and this does not disappoint. The two storylines seem to move toward each other at lightning speed… but I especially love that Quinn is bringing to light the *real* spy network, through which the German lines in rural France were infiltrated. The character of Lili is based on a real woman, as are some of the other characters. They deserve to be remembered, and that’s precisely what Quinn does. Brava.
Interesting. Not the best thing I ever ready but solid post WW2 historical fiction.
Fabulous story of mystery and intrigue during WWI and WWII and the women who were willing to serve in the spy networks. A truly believable tale of two lives interwoven with events of both wars. Real events and people are seamlessly woven in with the fictional characters. This is a beautiful but heart wrenching story that is well written and will leave you wanting to read more- and there is more in both the fiction and non-fiction genres. Amazing to learn what these women did (and learned what they were capable of) against the odds knowing it was pretty much a “one way ticket.”
Great plot, great development of characters, and can’t put it down storyline!
The book kept me turning the pages well into the night! Both heroines–the jaded ex-spy and the unmarried pregnant young woman–are compelling. We can’t wait to find out the mystery surrounding Eve, the ex-spy, and how discovering that is going to help young Charlie solve the problems of her own life. An incredible read!
Thrilled to read about such BRAVE women and wonderful if I would have the guts to do what they did for FREEDOM
I loved this book!
read this book!
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. There are some places where it is a tear jerker but well worth reading. Even though it is fiction it is based on real events and some of the people were real people. I checked this out from the library.
The Alice Network brings you back in post World War II era and even the first world war. Eve has lived her life for guilt and revenge for 30 years. Her enemy was, though, hard to catch and outsmart. So when her mission completed, there was no purpose for her to live. One thing Eve didn’t realize was that there was Charlie St.Clair who developed her respect, trust, and relationship with Eve. Young mother-to-be has grown strength in her through the journey with Eve and her stories when Eve was one of spies in the Alice Network. On her own unique way, Eve accept her love at the end.
It was not as good as I hoped and I found that I didn’t care about any of the characters.
If you like historical fiction, you will
enjoy this book!’
This was the best book I read in 2018 out of the hundred plus I read. It is an amazing story. Powerful, heart-breaking, wonderful.
What an amazing book. I had never given much thought to women as spies in WWI until I read that book that is based on real Alice Network of spies in occupied France during that war. Evelyn Gardiner appears to be a mouse of a woman with a stutter, but has a burning desire to work for England in the war. Recruited to be a spy in the Alice Network fulfilled that desire. Then it all went wrong and Evelyn, her mentor Lili and second in command Violette were arrested and imprisoned. Evelyn blamed herself until 1947 when a young pregnant American girl comes to her searching for a cousin who went missing in France in WWII. The information she brings to Evelyn galvanizes her to return to France in search of the truth. Auto mechanic and WWII vet Finn Kilgore assists them,
very informative about the part women had during WWII
Wonderful characters and fabulous story!
Historical fiction at its finest!
I normally don’t love books about wars, but this was so well written with characters that were easy to connect with. Women spies that were so brave and a young pregnant woman looking for here beloved cousin after the war was over. Loved it. Chose it for book club discussion
Really loved this book.
Loved this book! Great historical references. At the end of the novel the author lets the reader know where she strayed from the historical fact for artistic flow. I did not realize how inhumane that war was fought nor that so many countries turned a blind eye to what was happening to millions of innocent people ( most prominately the United States )
