Self probing story; worth taking the time to read.
Paulo is an eloquent writer and all his books are steeped with lessons and beautiful characters. Alchemy is an ancient practice and this book keeps the mystery of it alive
This should be required reading. I will definitely read it again. One of the best books I have ever read!
All time favorite book!!!
This book is in my top five of my most favorite reads.
Life changing. A must read for all young adults or anyone trying to find their purpose.
Thought provoking.
This is a page turner!
Do not only think to do it. Do it. We can have tons of excuse why not to change our life and fulfil our dreams. But just do the think that it is really important to you and your goal. That is the meaning of this book. Very inspirational.
I’ve written ten novels in my life, but I would never have begun my writing journey if I hadn’t read this book. I was lucky enough to meet the author, many years ago, and he encouraged me to follow my dreams and walk to Santiago de Compostela, which I did. Paulo, and this book, have been instrumental in changing my life for the better. Plus, it’s …
One of my favorite books. This is one of those books you read a few times over in your life and keep discovering lines that jump out and strike home.
A cheap re-working of an ancient Jewish proverb
This book follows a shepherd boy named Santiago who sells his flock and goes out to follow his dream. He leaves Spain and sets out for Egypt to go to the pyramids where he thinks he’ll find a treasure. Along the way he meets many people and learns a variety of lessons. The book’s a lesson in following your heart and I believe the way you react to …

Yet another “beloved” book that didn’t work for me. Had its moments, especially the parts about chasing your dream, persistence, and not giving into fear, either of failure or accomplishment. But overall its message seemed aimed at people who believe in fate and an interventionist deity.
A dear academic friend recommended this book to me. He said it changed him forever. It was a wonderful book and I equate it with the books by Mary Catherine Bateson, A gift from the sea and Carolyn Gold Heilbrun that give us new perspectives on ourselves and our lives.
Great read!
A bunch of sentimental pablum.
A must read for any aspiring visionary leader or visionary.
I spent a couple of hours last night reading this beloved book. The Alchemist told the story of Santiago, an Andalusian boy who travels to Egypt in search of his destiny. On the surface, it read as a simple story of the hero’s journey told in a different package. However, Coelho mixed various faith and belief systems to add another different layer …
