New York isn’t ready for Britain’s most dangerous ex-assassin… precinct known as “The Alamo.” Against such dangerous foes, Milton’s quest for redemption could come to an end.
The eleventh book in the USA Today bestselling John Milton series delivers thrills, action, and twists you just won’t see coming.
“It’s impossible not to think of Lee Child’s super-selling Jack Reacher” – The Times
“The literary sensation you’ve never heard of.” – The Telegraph
“Mark Dawson’s The Alamo is just the kind of thriller I love. A non-stop, grab-you-by-the-throat tale of doing the right thing no matter the odds. Simply excellent.” — USA Today bestselling author Brett Battles

Milton is a great character.
Love this series of books
Another great story about John and his struggles with his problems and the world’s problems. Action, intrigue, interesting characters. I did not put this down until I was done, except for taking our daughter to Birthday Dinner.
Easy to read and kept you wanting to read more
John Milton is the anti-hero to Lucas Davenport! This is a must read!
There’s something about Mark Dawson’s books that make me keep coming back. It’s the old good vs evil that never gets old. Dawson has created a sort of anti-hero for his protagonist: John Milton can be frightening and yet I’d want him on my side if I were in trouble. The books all move along briskly, offering lots of action without too many side plots, which I enjoy. Most of all, once I start one, I can’t put it down. Always a compelling read.
The Alamo is a good thriller about a dangerous man using his skills to save a young boy who can place a cop at the scene of a murder. John Milton is a skilled operator working as a cook to bring some order and peace into his life. John happens onto the murder scene to find the terrified boy. In his quest to protect the boy, John learns that he doesn’t know which cops he can trust. Through the twists and turns of the story, John applies the necessary amount of violence leading to a final confrontation with an evil drug lord who has been the strings of the bad cops.
love the characters
My first but not last introduction to Milton. I’ll be back for more!
John Milton takes on drug dealers and corrupt cops to protect a young man and his family in New York City. The pace was fast and, as usual with Mark Dawson books, once started it’s hard to stop reading. Milton has his own sense of justice that is usually against the law but the reader is so glad to see these villains lose – it makes for a great read. Thanks for the entertainment!
Mark Dawson has done it again, I keep saying with every John Milton book that he writes, that ‘this is the best one yet’. but I have to say it again, this one really is the best yet!
I love Mark Dawson’s ability to produce a really immersive description of the locations of his novels, in this case a very tough area of New York known as ‘The Alamo’. I really felt that I knew the area by the time I had finished the book.
Milton is just about the ultimate damaged hero character, and yet he doesn’t seem cheesy or cliched, he is just a human with some very extraordinary skills, but some very real and believable failings, which makes him very accessible, he is a great creation and a superb example of Mark Dawson’s writing skills.
The plot is quite intricate, and hence does have quite a bit of scene-setting, but once it is in to its stride it is the proverbial ultimate roller-coaster ride, with great action sequences, unexpected turns, and a very unexpected twist to the climax. The whole story is seasoned with a psychotic drug lord, corrupt cops and Russian mafia.
If you enjoy any type of thriller, then I would have no hesitation in recommending this book, you will love it.
John Milton is a character a bit like Jack Reacher but more complex, better developed and more interesting. A good read.
A clever plot with innocent people Milton protects, corrupt cops, Hispanic drug dealers and a Ukrainian gang family, one of whom Milton saved from drowning. When circumstances require, Milton reverts to his former self as wet operator for the UK that neither the corrupt cops, nor the mobsters can match. Lots of action.
I found all of the John Milton books to be very entertaining and attention keeping.
This book is another great read by Mark Dawson. After reading a few of his other books, I’m not surprised that the quality of this book has exceeded some of his others. John Milton books are his best by far.
Like this series by Mark Dawson
I have read all of the John Milton books by Mark Dawson. They are an acquired taste. John has lots of problems besides being a recovering alcoholic.
John hears a story at an AA meeting and decides to try to help another recovering alcoholic, Manny. In the process of helping, he undermines Manny’s ego, and Manny goes on a bender.
Manny had gotten tickets to a Giants/Cowboys game for him and his son, Freddy. When Manny doesn’t show up in time to go to the game, Freddy goes alone. He loves the Giants, loved the game. On the way home on the subway, Freddy goes into a restroom and finds a dead body. Shortly after Freddy enters the restroom, Milton enters. Milton hears Freddy crying and sees the dead guy. No one else is around to help, so Milton calls 911.
Milton and Freddy end up at the 75th Precinct to make statements. While waiting, Freddy sees one of the guys he saw leaving the restroom just before he found the body on the television.
Milton tries to help Freddy and Manny. The 75th is under investigation by Internal Affairs for corruption. Milton saves a swimmer who father is from the Ukraine. Everyone gets involved.
Like I said, I have read all of the John Milton books. I have yet to read one that he doesn’t drop his gun at a really crucial time. And, considering he used to be a government assassin and in the British SAS, it always makes me crazy. How can he always drop his gun? Really?
John has a fixation with AA and going to meetings, so that is the underlying theme of all of these books. John is trying to work the steps, but since he can’t really tell anyone how many people he has killed or even that he did kill them, he is always falling short. And, it isn’t like he can go back to all the people he has injured and make amends.
The Alamo isn’t a great read, but it is okay. John Milton is someone I have come to know and I’m still interested in finding out what is going wrong with his life next.
Just can’t get enough of Mark Dawson and his John Milton series. Great reads.
I read all the John Milton books, it’s a character I am familiar with and like. I do not believe this one is as great as some of the others, but it is still entertaining reading!
