I’d always known I was different, a loner, the pretty little weird girl. Butnot even my overactive imagination could’ve made this up… trespassers.
My name is Ruby Wynn and according to some ancient prophecy I’m a
dream’ar, not a dreamer, and my dreams have the power to unfold in waking
reality. But the last thing I want is to close my eyes at night, and I’m dreadfully
tired of hiding. I want to give up but Markus won’t let me. I want my life back.
I want my loved ones back but fate wants me more, one last time.

This storyline was unique to me with such vivid descriptions I could easily see it in my imagination. The female character Ruby could be you or I in a world where the end has come. I am still undecided between the two male characters who have taken such an interest in Ruby . I know which character seems to have her best interest but everything isn’t always as it seems. I love when a book sets my imagination on fire. Needless to say I will be reading the second book. This book is a hidden gem which I wholeheartedly recommend!
Filled with colorful characters, unexpected twists and turns, and heart-renching moments, The Afterwards by N. Heinz captures your attention from the start with it’s creative wit.
Being the town nut since she can remember, doubt is something Ruby, a young adult with an extremely creative mind, is no stranger to. The only things keeping her from being consumed by the doubt are her caring mother, her boss, and her denial of what truly happens to her when she closes her eyes at night. When all her safe guards are taken away, the doubt will threaten not only her life, but the balance of the world.
From beginning to end, Heinz captures and keeps your attention, not because it’s action-packed, but because the suspense and originality of the plot won’t let up. Even in the quiet moments of the book, doubt can still be heard whispering, keeping the reader on edge because the sense that it is just the quiet before the storm.
Heinz’ characters are just as original. Generally, main characters try to keep a sense of goodness about them and don’t intentionally flaunt their flaws, but the blatant honesty of her character about her flaws, about her other side, is so enduring to the character that it not only works, but works well. Not many can achieve such candor and still have the character come across so appealing to the reader, it is a testiment to Heinz ability as a writer.
The focus of the entire plot is also authentically original. The blurring of the lines between what is real and what is not is done so artfully, it fosters a sense of doubt not only within the book, but within the readers themselves. It’ll have you questioning your own mind and what you think you see. And just when you think you e figured it out, Heinz flips the table.
This book will leave readers face down in the dirt, out of breath, and wanting more. Can’t wait to read the second.
I gave this one a four and a half stars and would most definitely recommend the entire series.
