NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this riveting novel, Danielle Steel explores a high-profile affair that reverberates throughout an entire family, from the wounded wife to her husband—torn between two women—to the wife’s close-knit sisters and their mother. When Rose McCarthy’s staff at Mode magazine pitches a cover shoot with Hollywood’s hottest young actress, the actress’s sizzling affair with a … sizzling affair with a bestselling French author is exposed. The author happens to be Rose’s son-in-law, which creates a painful dilemma for her. Her daughter Nadia, a talented interior designer, has been struggling to hold her marriage together, and conceal the truth from their young daughters, her family, and the world. But Nicolas, her straying husband, is blinded by passion for a younger woman—and not only that, she is pregnant with his child.
Nadia’s three sisters close ranks around her, flying to Paris from Los Angeles and New York to lend support and offer their widely divergent advice. Athena, a jovial celebrity chef with her own TV show in Los Angeles, is leery of marriage. Olivia, a stern conservative New York superior court judge, is haunted by a shocking secret of her own. Venetia, a zany fashion designer, happily married with three kids, has the gentlest, most realistic point of view. Despite their well-meaning advice, Nadia needs to figure out what she herself thinks, and what to do next.
The Affair is about the painful journey to discover who you are, what you want, and how much forgiveness and compromise you are capable of in order to be loved. It’s about finding yourself at the crossroads of life when everything is on the line. It’s about the hard lessons we are forced to learn about others and ourselves. Right up until its final twist, this gripping novel is full of powerful insights about who we love, how much—and even how much we love ourselves.

The Affair is the latest novel by Danielle Steel. I found it easy to read with Danielle Steel’s trademark writing style. I have been reading this author’s novels since I was twelve (I borrowed them from my mother and then the library). Despite the subject matter, it is an easy breezy type of book. A husband has an affair, and we see how it affects his wife and children. The situation is further complicated because the mistress is an actress, and he is a bestselling novelist. The point-of-view switches between Nadia, Nicolas, and Rose. We get to see each person’s point-of-view on the affair and how it affects them. We go from Paris to LA and to New York as well as the French countryside. The author provides good descriptions of each character which allowed me to visualize them. I liked seeing Nadia develop into a stronger more confident woman. We also get to the see the four sisters strengthen their bond. This story did not play out as I expected which was great. I like that the women are smart and driven. It is wonderful that the author gave us strong female characters. There is plenty of glamour as well in the story (it would not be a Danielle Steel novel without a little glitz). There is some mild foul language in the book plus a repetition of information. I do not need a character’s backstory repeated to me several times nor the details of the affair. The Affair was a wonderfully distracting novel. I enjoy books that takes your mind of your own worries. The Affair is a poignant novel with a frustrating affair, sensitive sisters, a compassionate mother, a self-absorbed thespian, a sinister secret, a problematic pregnancy, and a reckless spouse.
The Affair by Danielle Steel is a well written book about the dissolution of a marriage, well, maybe two. It was a time when four sisters came together with their mother in a way they never had before, despite being close. Their mother, Rose, was a widow, their father having died four years earlier. She was editor of a huge fashion magazine published in New York. It was her life. One day her team pitched a young actress who was having an affair with a French producer/writer. A fact, which she kept to herself, was that he was her son-in-law, the husband of her youngest daughter Nadia, who was an interior designer living in France. Nicolas had gone had gone public with the affair at Cannes, of all places, and apparently it was now common knowledge. She excused herself and went to her office, where she called one of her daughters, who was ignorant of the situation, and then called Nadia. So began months of misery for the entire family.
This is a lovely story of family, of the misery of breakups, and of the effect one mistake can have on everyone involved. The error rippled out until it affected everyone. Her sisters and mother all had opinions. They all told her what they thought. In the end it was her decision. Was it the embarrassment? Was it the love she still felt? Was itself-protection? This was a moving story of all of these things and more. Each of us has felt some of these emotions; some of us, many of them. To see it on the written page makes it so much more real. During a breakup, one feels like a crazy person. Would have; could have; should have. To love someone after she had been treated so? It was heart-breakingly explosive to read all of these emotions as well as all of these opinions. Typical Danielle Steel. That which makes her popular. Wonderful story. I recommend it.

Rose McCarthy, age 66, is an elegant woman and has been editor-in-chief for “Mode Magazine” for 25 years. She is the widow of successful banker Wallace McCarthy and mother to 4 grown daughters.
The magazine is working on its huge September issue, eagerly awaited by readers which details the upcoming winter styles. When discussing the cover for the issue, senior stylist, Charity, wants to feature Pascale Solon, a 22-year-old actress with Lolita looks. Rose is not in favor of her as she is having an affair with a well-known, married French author, Nicholas Bateau and it is rumored that Pascale is pregnant. Sadly, and unknown to her co-workers, Rose’s daughter, Nadia, is married to Nicholas. They live in Paris and have 2 young daughters.
Trying to deal with her pain, Nadia invites her sisters and mother to come for a July 4th visit to their chateau. As they haven’t been together in awhile, they agree and meet up to discuss the situation and advise Nadia.
This story is about the closeness of family and unconditional love they have for one another. I liked how the story included all of the sisters, their difference lifestyles, and their own problems they faced. While I’m not sure I would have been as forgiving as Nadia, at least she made her own decision that suited her and her family. Once again, well done, Danielle Steel.

I enjoyed reading The Affair.
Awful boring
She never fails to deliver a great story. I’ve been reading her stories forever. Thank you.
It’s was ok! Could have cut at least 50 pages and not miss anything. To me not one of her better books.
I have read every book Danielle Steele has ever written, while this was not my top favorite, it was another great book by Ms Steele
I love Danielle Steel books and this one was no exception. Rose McCarthy runs the highly successful Mode magazine. When an idea is pitched to interview a hot young actress Rose hesitates because the actress is having an affair with one of her daughter’s husband. This is a story of family and the bond between sisters. Great characters and the story drew me in. I had a hard time putting the book down. Definitely recommend
Not one of her best
Rose McCarthy is the Editor of Mode Magazine. Her staff wants to do a cover shoot and an article with a famous young actress who is having an affair and is pregnant. She is having the affair with an author who is Rose’s Son In law.. His wife Nadia is a well known interior designer who is trying to protect herself and her children from the media attention. Nadia’s 3 sisters, and her mother each have opinions as to what Nadia should do but she must make this decision on her own. The family circles her to provide support for her. What this book teaches us is that relationships are important and what we do will affect those around us. It was a good book to read and I enjoyed it!
I’ve been reading Danielle Steel for as long as I can recall. She has always been a champion of women in some way, even if small. They always seem to figure it all out and wind up with a satisfying HEA. In this book, she jumped the shark in a huge way. I found this book, though well written offensive and demeaning to women and marriage. I finished it as I kept hoping that the main character, Nadia would continue to be strong and yet she completely caved and took her cheating disgusting cheating pathetic husband back. I cannot think of a single woman IRL that would ever debase herself or her children like that. It was if she was a cult member that couldn’t let go and I was embarrassed for her. I do not care that it is acceptable and very “French” to cheat and carry as if nothing happened no matter how many times the author repeated it. Not acceptable in any way. There was so much wrong with this story and DS’s portrayal of women that I wonder what she was thinking or why anyone would like it. If you want to read about women allowing themselves to be treated as second class citizens, emotional punching bags and having no respect for themselves then go ahead and read it, but if you have even a modicum of respect for just one woman, skip it. I wish I had.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley.com in exchange for a fair and honest review.
DS has done it again!!!!!!!!!
Rose the mother is a powerful women at Mode Magazine. She has four daughters who are just as strong as there mother. Nadia, Olivia, Venetia and Athena. This book is about An Affair that Nadia’s husband has with a very high profiled actress. It tells you all the twist and turns of this relationship. Should Nadia take him back should she end it with him. Should their love that have had keep them together. I do say that a lot of people today walk away maybe too fast before they try to work it out.
This story tells you more about the sisters and their life’s.
This is a good book to read and will keep you interested. Maybe not what you want for an ending.
The Affair is an emotional read with likable characters and a storyline that was packed with family drama and some interesting twists. I loved that it wasn’t just about one character but involved multiple family members. The writing is good and I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.
As Editor in Chief for Mode magazine, Rose runs a tight ship and does not ever mix business with her personal life. When the staff wants to put on the cover an up and coming young, beautiful actress, Rose is shocked to learn that this actress has been having an open affair with a married famous French author, who so happens to be her son-in-law. And to top it off she is also pregnant with his baby. Attempting to not draw suspicion from her staff, she is quick to call her daughters to find out what is going on and if Nadia is aware of her husband’s indiscretion. Despite Rose’s success, being a mother and protecting her family will always come first.
Nadia is blindsided by the public humiliation of Nicolas’ affair. Knowing she must protect her two young daughters from the media and gossip, she wants nothing more than to surround herself with her three sisters and mother. Even though all 5 women couldn’t be more different from each other, their bond is strong enough to give each other love, comfort, and support. Even though all the women have differing opinions, it’s ultimately up to Nadia what her decision will be. Though Nicolas is devastated and remorseful for doing what he did and hurting Nadia, does she have it in her heart to forgive him and give him a second chance? Or are her and the girls better off without him?
The book shows the bond between family and even during their busy and chaotic lives, they will always be there for each other. One sister in particular reveals a dark secret that ultimately does not stay hidden and her world is suddenly turned upside down. Though she gave Nadia some harsh advice, she now realizes that it’s easy to tell someone what to do but it’s completely different when you are the one physically going through everything. I’ve been a Danielle Steel fan for years from her books to movies and was excited to read this. Looking forward to the next book.
Thank you Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine for the opportunity to read this book.
The Affair by Danielle Steel is another one of her wonderful family-oriented novels. Rose McCarthy, runs a successful magazine, who is widowed and the matriarch of 4 grown and successful daughters. She is a workaholic, but always finds time to keep up with her daughters lives and happiness. During a meeting at the magazine ‘Mode’, her staff wants to do a cover for a young new actress, especially since there is a scandal of the girl being pregnant. To Rose’s dismay, which she keeps quiet, the man with the pregnant actress happens to be her son in law. Rose must make a decision to allow this to be on her magazine, even to the possibility of interviews. She calls three of her daughters, to find out what they knew and their thoughts, before she calls her youngest daughter, Nadia, whose husband is cheating on her publicly.
Nadia talks to her mother, explaining that she is trying to keep her two young daughters from discovering about their father. She was blindsided by all the publicity, and how her husband is besotted with this young actress, but he pleads with her to give him a chance until he helps the actress with the baby, and leave her, since he still loves Nadia. Rose will fly to Paris, where they live, to help Nada in making the right decision, as Nadia ensures her mother to go forward with the cover, as everything is out in the open. Naida needs to deal with her husband, protect her daughters, and decide what is best for her.
Nadia’s three sisters decide to fly to Paris and spend a long weekend at their chateau to help give her support and advice. It was wonderful to see the sisters together, and how close they were. We get to meet each of them, and learn about their own lives, and their significant others. Nadia is happy to be with her sisters, as each will have their own thoughts. All four of the girls have their own successful business in different fields; Nadia, is an interior decorator who lives in France, Olivia is a court judge living in New York, Venetia, is a fashion designer and Athena, is a celebrity chef living in Los Angeles.
What follows focuses mostly on Nadia, and whether she can move past Nicholas discretion, and decide if she should divorce him. I loved how all four sisters were so close, and always being there for each other; even their significant others were pretty good. Besides Nadia’s issues, we get to see how the other sisters are dealing with this, as well as their own drama and secrets along the way, not to mention how great Rose was in having such a great close-knit family.
The Affair was a wonderful family story line that brought the family together in this crisis. This was so very well written by Danielle Steel.
Another great story of four strong women who happen to be sisters and have an even stronger matriarch Mother. All of these women are successful and accomplished in their lives and chosen vocations.
When ones Husband has an affair, the sisters and mom rally around each other and in comforting her they also comfort each other. They don’t live near each other but still find ways to show up and and offer their support.
I love reading Danielle’s books as I find them to be great feel good stories with strong Female protagonists.
Thank you to Netgalley, Random House Ballantine and the Author Danielle Steel for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Affair by Danielle Steel
How an affair in one family can affect the whole family dynamics. Rose McCarthy is a whirlwind Editor in Chief of a fashion magazine, a loving marriage, three talented daughters.
Her youngest daughter, Nadia who lives in France is the one who has the husband who cheated with a young actress and then gets her pregnant. The worst thing is they flaunt their affair all over the press. Nadia’s mother even had to make the decision to publish the article in her own magazine.
Nadias two other sisters became involved because it was there sister.
Nadia and her two sisters and her mother end up taking a journey of self discovery, balance, resolution, and bonding.
Once again Danielle Steel takes a topic that is difficult, but brings it to the forefront in such a way that a person sees that there are two choices to make. The first choice would be to immediately start the process to separate and then divorce. The other choice is to see if your marriage can be saved. The growth of the characters is phenomenal and you feel for the sisters and the mother and the actual sister whose husband cheated on her!
This is such a awe-inspiring book that I definitely will recommend!
I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
Danielle Steel can write about the best of romance and she can write about the worst of romance but you will always enjoy her stupendous books.
I received an ebook ARC from Netgalley and this is my voluntary, honest review.
A soul-searching revelation! Danielle Steel always makes us stop and think as we read about the emotions and situations of life that she weaves seamlessly into her characters and in THE AFFAIR, we’re faced with more than one person’s perspective when a torrid affair is revealed that tears a family apart at the seams and leaves emotions boiling over.
New York magazine maven Rose McCarthy is blindsided when the latest topic of gossip on a potential cover model brings to light the affair her son-in-law is dragging her youngest daughter through in Paris. She and her other three daughters quickly rally around to love and support Nadia through the whirlwind her life has become.
Nadia is hearing advice from every direction but all she can really feel right now is devastation as the man that she loves with all of her heart tells her he’s torn between still loving her and his addiction to the young starlet currently carrying his child. She has two small children who adore their father and she doesn’t know how to break their hearts … or if she even should.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a drama filled read with lots of emotional upheavals and several supporting characters that lend volume to the overall story.
