What would you be willing to give up to experience the presence of God in your life again? Many of us sign up for a physical detox program, thinking that if our bodies are healthier, then we’re healthier. But a healthy body doesn’t do us a lot of good if we are spiritually malnourished.Welcome to the 40-Day Sugar Fast, a fast that begins with us giving Jesus our sugar and ends with Jesus giving us … with Jesus giving us more of himself–the only thing that can ever truly satisfy our soul’s deep hunger. On this 40-day journey you’ll learn how to stop fixating on food and other things you use to fill the voids in life and instead fix your eyes on Christ.
Anyone who runs to sugar for comfort or a reward, who eats mindlessly or out of boredom, who feels physically and spiritually lethargic, or who struggles with self-control will discover here not only freedom from their cravings but an entirely new appetite for the good things God has for us.

Life transforming book! It has helped me greatly in my walk with God.
The One we worship on Sunday must remain Lord over our lives Monday through Saturday. (p. 30)
Are we using other things to satisfy a longing when God is truly the answer? Are we turning to sugar, other foods, or even worldly distractions to satisfy those longings? The title of this book implies that this book deals totally on a sugar fast but The 40-Day Sugar Fast goes much deeper than that. Yes, sugar and sweets can be an addiction but author Wendy Speake shows us that sugar is just one of many things that we often expect will satisfy. What we really need, however, is a total reliance on Jesus Christ to fulfill our needs.
As you take part in this sugar fast, you will find yourself feeling better physically and stronger spiritually. Speake shares motivational thoughts, Bible scripture, and suggested prayers as she walks us through this 40 day fast and, on page 52, she reminds us that “Each day, as you go to HIm rather than to food, the Spirit of God gives you strength that those empty calories never could!”
So, if you want to become healthier in both body and spirit, you will certainly benefit from reading and following The 40-Day Sugar Fast.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Books and was under no obligation to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts.
When I was given the chance to be in the 40 Day Sugar Fast launch group, I quickly took it! Wendy Speake is fantastic, and I feel as if she truly understands where many of us are coming from. In the book, we are not held to a certain level of fasting – we can completely give up anything that turns to sugar (white flour, etc) or just strictly sugar. If we stumble and fall during the fast, she does not condemn you, but rather lifts you up and tells you it’s ok to just pick up the pieces and go again.
How deep and far you take the fast is up to you. Each day has a few pages of inspirational messages (and many times convicting. Ouch!). The author has gone through each day and given us carefully selected Bible passages to relate to the topic of the day as well.
I was given a free digital copy from the author and publisher when I pre-ordered the book. All opinions expressed are my own, and no Review was required.
As a Christian, a wife, and a mother, I knew I needed to seek to break up with sugar. I have loved reading Wendy’s blog and books, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to go through this journey with her. Perfect for self-study, group study, a Church project, and more each of the devotionals in this book will cause you to think and will help strengthen your relationship with God. This book is definitely worth reading.
This is an encouraging book to let go of sugar and turn to Jesus instead.
What this is not, a diet book or recipe book. It is a chance to get closer to Jesus by concentrating on him instead of food or more specifically sugar. There is a page a day for the fourty days to read and “chew” on so to speak. I’ve participated in a couple of the fasts and they have opened my eyes to God’s sweetness during the process and drawn me closer to him. I would encourage anyone to give it a try and see how you change during the process.
The author will be sponsoring another fast in January 2020. It’s not too late to sign up.
This book was a personal purchase.
This book. What it’s not. It’s not a diet book. It’s not a fluffy devotion that you mindlessly read every day, and tick it as done. What it is. It’s a book that has 40 days of devotions that make you take a very good look at what “sets us off and causes us to eat compulsively or emotionally” For me, this book has made me look at my life and how I process life’s triggers, or pressures, and what response I have to them when they arise. Do I go to the pantry, mindlessly scroll social media, or play a word game, when instead, will I pause, grab my bible, find a verse, pray it, meditate on it. and make God’s word what I run to when I’m feeling worn out, stressed out and life’s pressures squeezing me hard? Wendy has a writing style where it feels like your’re sitting with her and she’s personally mentoring you through the journey of fasting and turning our lives back around to our heavenly father, instead of filling the gaps with chocolate or other mindless activities. This is a book that I will go back to time and time again. Thank you Baker Books via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
