Debbie Macomber’s special warmth and heart shine in this classic novel of letting love find its way home. After watching the man she loves walk down the aisle with her sister, Cathy Thompson needs to get away. Alaska—beautiful, remote, and far from bitter memories—sounds like the perfect place to start over. But a brand-new life comes with brand-new challenges . . . namely Grady Jones, a pilot … Jones, a pilot and single dad who has a solution to both their problems: a marriage of convenience.
Grady isn’t looking for love. He tried that once and failed. He just needs a wife, and Cathy is smart, easy on the eyes, and adored by his daughter. But Grady doesn’t count on the way Cathy gets under his skin, the way she makes him want to be a better husband and father. Grady didn’t think he had any more love inside to give, but Cathy proves him wrong. With his wife by his side, this pilot learns to soar on the wings of a future neither of them dreamed possible.

Such a good read
Cathy finds a job as a special needs teacher in Alaska after her boyfriend marries her sister. Her heart goes out to a special girl who has dyslexia but has no mother and a father who spends all his time as a pilot. Through an ad in the paper the pilot (Grady) and Cathy meet for a date. Sparks fly as Cathy tries to get Grady to spend more time with his daughter. Grady finds Cathy appealing only as someone to take care of his daughter with added benefits if he marries Cathy. The plot is really good with some surprises. My one disappointment was I would like to have seen more of a focus on dyslexia to help the many people who struggle with it.
Debbie always a joy to read….
A fun read.
I just couldn’t get behind any of the characters of this book, except possibly the side-kick friend. I wish I could remember her name, but that says something about this book. Cathy (our heroine) breaks up with her jerk of a boyfriend, Steve, who then runs off and marries her sister. After playing the maid of honor in the wedding, she runs off to Alaska to get away from it all.
She takes a job as a special ed teacher, and meets the father (Grady) of one of her cutest students. He is devastatingly handsome (of course), but emotionally wounded from his first marriage. He talks Cathy into marrying him, not because he loves her (he makes it plain that love is not part of the picture), but because his daughter needs a mother. Cathy is still hung up on Steve for some reason that is never quite clear, but she decides that getting married might be better than crying herself to sleep every night.
Days before the wedding Cathy gets a call from her sister who is pregnant (oh joy) while the same day a letter arrives from Steve telling Cathy that she is his one and only true love, that he only married the sister to try to make her jealous, and that he wants to leave the sister and marry Cathy. The only reason that Cathy doesn’t run and fall into his arms immediately is because she feels badly for her sister.
So the story is that Cathy is hung up on dirt-bag Steve, but marries Grady anyway, who becomes cold and distant and emotionally abusive. But guess what? Turns out that Grady was only insecure because Steve sent Grady a letter telling him that if he really loved Cathy he would leave her and let the two of them (Steve and Cathy) be together.
Why she would want to be with either of these two losers is beyond me, and frankly I was starting to wonder why either of them would want her. I got a wintry feeling from this book, and not in a good way.
I would give it an Average rating. It seems to be a potboiler and not up to the standard of her /Seattle books. Little character development. A time passer.
Predictable but well written. I love Debbie Macomber’s books.
Sometimes you just need a good easy to read book. Loved the story, about a teacher who moves to Alaska after a break up with her boyfriend. For her, new adventures and maybe even some romance. Also, a little family drama thrown in. Good book.
Boring did not finish
Save it for when you’re at the beach & can watch the waves when it doesn’t hold your attention. She’s written better books in this genre.
If you love Debbie Macomber, you will
love this book. Sweet, romantic,
uplifting. If you are feeling a little
blue, read this easy-read book.
Learned a bit about Alaska and found the characters likeable.
The book seemed a bit trite and, maybe, unrealistic in its depiction of Alaska. (Also, about the school situation. However, I really enjoyed reading the story.
A man and a woman, both hurt by a previous love, but can’t seem to get over them. In the unlikely of terms, perhaps in spite, they end up married. Things start out great and Cathy develops a bond with Grady’s daughter, Angela, but then things take a twist. Grady thinks Cathy will never get over her ex and starts pulling away. Cathy thinks she following in the same footsteps of her mother, and tries to figure out what pushed Grady away. Later on, Cathy and Grady realize that after everything, they find themselves not only caring for each other, but in love, when originally they married for convenience.
It was ok….nothing spectacular
As always, I really enjoy Debbie Macomber books! Her stories really draw you in.
Hard to put down. Loved it
As always, Debbie Macomber delivers a good escape from the trials of every day life. Once you meet the characters, you are drawn into their lives and care about them.
