Spanning four and a half centuries, James A. Michener’s monumental saga chronicles the epic history of Texas, from its Spanish roots in the age of the conquistadors to its current reputation as one of America’s most affluent, diverse, and provocative states. Among his finely drawn cast of characters, emotional and political alliances are made and broken, as the loyalties established over the … course of each turbulent age inevitably collapse under the weight of wealth and industry. With Michener as our guide, Texas is a tale of patriotism and statesmanship, growth and development, violence and betrayal—a stunning achievement by a literary master.
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener’s Hawaii.

“Vast, sprawling, and eclectic in population and geography, the state has just the sort of larger-than-life history that lends itself to Mr. Michener’s taste for multigenerational epics.”—The New York Times

A true Michener quality novel. Reading Texas you will feel the difficulties, struggles, the passing of generations of people and know the true struggle of settling the early west. A wonderful book in its scope and ability to pull off the magnitude of its topic. Texas is big.
Michener, he’s always good.
James Michener NEVER. wrote anything that was not fantastic! I’ve read everyone of his books! I reread every 4 to 5 years!
takes forever to read but well worth it….
his research is remarkable…love my historical fiction..
Book that holds up very well 40 years or so after it was written.
I knew I always liked Michener books but I’d never read this one and it explains so much about Texans. My sister and her family live in Texas and sometimes I feel like we live in different countries – now I get it. Texans really do live in a different country and they’re not like us.
It is a combination of the vastness of Texas, the wars won, …
Enjoyed it thoroughly.
As always, Michener is accurate, and he tells a wonderful story.
I love James A Michener’s books because they bring history to life… a great blend of fact and fiction! It was because if his books that ignited my love of history. Here, he writes about generations of Texans from way before it was even Texas and brings the characters’ families to the present. 🙂
Mr. Michner is great story-teller. All of his actors are realistic.
Typical of Michener. It is an epic that accurately depicts the history of Texas. As a Texan, I find this a true characterization of both historical development and mindset of Texans.
Michener is always a great story-teller. Texas delivers.
James Michener has been one of my favorite authors for many years. He creates exciting characters that you get to know and love, and he places them into historic settings that are largely authentic. A wonderful story teller.
True look at American history
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Inspiring, informative and gave details to history.
This book reads like a recitation of facts. There’s very little “story” here. It’s as though Michener felt obligated to include everything his researchers found. It made for a very bloated and unfocused work.
Great book! My husband and I just finished it and learned so much about the history of Texas.
I like James Michener books. He picks a subject and starts at the beginning and develops the storyline. It is filled with historical truth combined with a dash of the story of everyday characters who might have lived in that time. A Page-turner in my book.
This very long book kept me reading to the end, but it was a disappointment. Less telling and more action would have made it better. I like historical fiction, but this book relied on fiction when real history would have been more compelling.
Best historical fiction ever: I am planning to read it again this winter
