In James Patterson’s white-hot Western thriller, a Texas Ranger fights for his life, his freedom, and the town he loves as he investigates his ex-wife’s murder. Across the ranchlands and cities of his home state, Rory Yates’s discipline and law-enforcement skills have carried him far: from local highway patrolman to the honorable rank of Texas Ranger. He arrives in his hometown to find a … his hometown to find a horrifying crime scene and a scathing accusation: he is named a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife, Anne, a devoted teacher whose only controversial act was ending her marriage to a Ranger.
In search of the killer, Yates plunges into the inferno of the most twisted and violent minds he’s ever encountered, vowing to never surrender. That code just might bring him out alive.

Texas Ranger Rory Yates returns to his hometown to find it crippled by crime and he’s accused of murdering his ex-wife. He works to get to the bottom of that crime and I thought I had it figured out early on but was way off base. This is a short story and I found it to be the perfect read at the end of an evening. Put some country-western on, maybe grab an adult beverage, sit back, and enjoy the read.
Within the pages of this exceptionally crafted book lies a story of jealously, deceit, murder and loss; a story that is certain knock you off the edge of your seat by the time it’s all said and done! From the moment I cracked the cover on this one I was mesmerized with all I found, the words pulled me, had me scooting to the edge of my seat, and holding on for dear life; the action was non-stop, as were my suspicions! As I followed this dedicated Texas Ranger I couldn’t help but think this one would make a a good movie, each page painting a vivid picture, and each page stealing my breath and rattling my nerves… WOW what a read!! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it is an enthralling tale that is certain to hold your attention from start to finish!
Waaay below his usual standard ; I did not even finish it. Hope he doesn’t use this co-writer again.
This new series does not “feel” like James Patterson, but that is “ok”, it does show some promise even though it was a bit predictable. In some ways the ending tries to leave you hanging about the title character, Rory, continuing his career with the Texas Rangers but of course he continues. Otherwise, they would need to rename the series.
Who doesn’t love James Patterson or a Texas Ranger!
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Others have told me they don’t enjoy the Patterson books as much when they are co-authored. Although this one did not disappoint me. I read it with a friend who lives several hours away. Every few days we would call and discuss the plot. I must say we were both surprised by the result of the “whodunit” factor – each picking a different character we thought was responsible. We were both wrong! To me that is the mark of a good read – you love the words but you aren’t absolutely sure of the resolution until you have all the facts, right down to the last page.
Who killed Ann? Rory Yates, Texas ranger, returns to his home town to find out. Forbidden to work the case, due to the fact that Ann is his former wife, Rory can’t stop himself from investigating and gets into major trouble. Suspicion points to Ann’s lover, but is he really the one? Rory thinks so and pursues the man relentlessly. This is a roller-coaster ride of suspicion and suspense. I loved Rory’s character but wanted to throttle him at times for his reckless behavior. I loved the feel of the background for this modern-day western, set in a small town where everyone knows everyone- or do they? Remember, there is a killer at large and it could be anyone. I highly recommend this story. Be ware Patterson fans, it’s a little different than his other crime series. The narration is excellent.
I like James Patterson but not this particular book. Being a Texan, I found it stereotypical to the extreme. I didn’t like the main character. Honestly, a Texas Ranger who behaves as he did shouldn’t be allowed to continue. I actually felt more of a connection to his nemesis. I won’t read the next book in the series.
Fascinating story of a twisted mind. The Texas Ranger keeps up the pursuit of evidence until the murderer come to justice.
Good read
wonderful book, quick read. suspenseful. surprise ending.
Had to continue reading until i finished the book. It’s one you can’t put down
James Patterson’s TEXAS RANGER is phenomenal!
I absolutely loved this book. I was enthralled from the beginning to the conclusion.
Rory Yates has become my new badass cop, but being a Texas Ranger just added to his rough-tough disposition.
After being relocated to the Texas Border town of McAllen, Texas after shooting a man in Waco, his superiors figured he was safer down there until the investigation into the shooting has been resolved.
As Rory is finishing up a Border bust, his cell rings.
Ann his ex-wife is frantic and scared to death… someone is threatening to kill her.
As he heads north 7 hours to Waco to find out who is behind the threatening calls, he just prays he makes it in time.
He arrives in Waco to flashing lights and multiple law enforcement surrounding his former neighborhood, to be exact Ann’s Home.
Rory knows he didn’t make it in time, he just hopes Ann will still be alive to forgive him.
Riveting, fast-paced, and captivating, my favorite James Patterson book to date.
It’s a real page Turner. Couldn’t put it down till the end. Love this book. I’ve never really been a Patterson fan, but this book is awesome. Must read.
It was ok but not in the Patterson ilk. It was an easy read as always but not a page turner. It just wasn’t what I expected from Patterson
A predictable James Patterson book, which is something easy to read and not a lot of thought needed. This story takes you to Texas with Texas Ranger Rory Yates as he rushes home when he receives a telephone call from his ex-wife who is scared about threats she has been receiving. Yates arrives home to find his ex-wife murdered and later finding himself on the suspect list. Most of the book is far-fetched but an easy to read as Ranger Yates begins investigating the murder (yes, he is told not to) and you learn more about the man behind the badge.
This book was written to keep you in suspense, but it was easy to figure out from the second chapter on. The only character that had problems with the plot was the hero.
I Loved it!!!
This book was quick reading and easy to follow.
Another great book by James Patterson. I will be looking for more books with Rory Yates as The Texas Ranger. Definitely could be the country Alex Cross. Loved this book
