A woman with a burning need to break free from her past . . . Rose Landro is on the run. Seeking refuge at the Rimrock Ranch, she is finally ready to claim the land her granddaddy left her and make a fresh start. But her return is rife with controversy when cattle begin disappearing—and a handsome menace named Tanner McCade starts watching Rose a little too closely. Could the new cowhand be … the new cowhand be connected to the men she’s hiding from? Or is there another reason the rugged stranger is shadowing her every move?
A man ready to fight boldly for his future . . .
There’s a secret in Rose Landro’s eyes, a mystery that Special Ranger Tanner McCade is determined to uncover. Even if the beauty isn’t behind the cattle rustling he’s investigating, she’s way too skittish, and all too exquisite for Tanner to just let slide past his piercing gaze. Then he discovers a vulnerability in Rose that has him aching to protect her—and longing to possess her. . . .
“Big, bold, and sexy . . . Janet Dailey at her best!”

Another splendid western adventure from the incomparable Janet Dailey! FIVE CHEERING STARS!
I’ve now read and enjoyed all six books in the exciting “Tylers of Texas” series. Texas Free–the fifth book in the series–is actually Book 2 chronologically. The story begins in 1985, when Bull Tyler is only thirty-four and his two sons–Will and Beau–are young boys. The boys eventually grow up and have books of their own (Texas Tall and Texas True). Texas Free is the compelling story of feisty Rose Landro.
I first met Rose in Texas Fierce, when–at age 14–she killed a neighboring rancher in self-defense after he murdered her grandfather. With Bull Tyler’s help, she fled to Mexico, where she was taken in by a kind couple in the small town of Rio Seco. When this story begins twelve years later, the town has been taken over by the Cabreras–a vicious drug cartel–who’ve killed anyone who opposed them, including Rose’s foster parents. When Lucho Cabrera tries to rape Rose a second time, she kills him and flees back to Bull Tyler’s Rimrock Ranch in Texas, intending to reclaim the adjoining thirty acres she’d inherited from her grandfather.
Rose has big dreams, but she faces strong opposition. Bull Tyler claimed the land in her absence, needing the water from its year-round creek for his cattle. He’s not about to give it back to Rose. And the nefarious Ferg Prescott–Bull’s enemy and owner of the neighboring Prescott Ranch–will stop at nothing to destroy both Bull and Rose, intending to add all of their land to his sprawling ranch. But Rose’s greatest threat is Refugio Cabrera, the powerful head of the Mexican drug cartel, who vows to find and murder the woman who killed his only brother.
There’s plenty of suspense and danger in this gripping story of a strong woman’s determination to survive against all opposition. But she can’t do it alone, and Special Ranger Tanner McCade–who’s been assigned to investigate rustling in the area–is soon attracted to lovely, mysterious Rose. Though she’s been horribly abused by men, she gradually accepts his help. Can these two damaged people open their hearts to love? Their sweet, slow-burn romance weaves beautifully through the dramatic plot.
It all culminates in murders, fire, kidnapping, and a chilling confrontation with Refugio Cabrera and his cohorts. I’m going no further, because I don’t want to spoil the ending. Grab your copy and enjoy another romantic western adventure from the incomparable Janet Dailey. As always, you’ll find no vulgar language or explicit sex scenes. I enthusiastically recommend Texas Free and the entire Tylers of Texas series! (FYI: Rose also plays a role in Texas Forever, the final book in the series.)
I enjoyed this summer read. I wanted a book that would ‘entertain’ me and take me someplace different. It made me want to stay with the characters after I finished the story.
A wonderfully entertaining read! Great characters and storyline!
Loved Rosa’s hard work to be her own person!
Janet Dailey always delivers a wonderful story.
I have not been disappointed by any book by Janet Dailey. I recommend all her books.
It’s been a while since I read a Janet Daily book. As always, she does not disappoint
Good story, not like any other story with just a change of characters! Another good book by Janet Dailey!
well written, kept my interest.
Loved it
I enjoyed the encore reading of this book. I read it several years ago under a different title. If not for the outstanding writing, I would have been very upset. I do not enjoy being burned by this re-titling, re-releasing business.
Great as all Janet Dailey’s books are. She couldn’t write a bad one of she tried
Always enjoy reading Janet Dailey books!
Love following the characters in Janet Dailey’s books. So many of the characters in her series become part of your family. Texas Free is the follow up book that I waited for and had lots of twists and turns that made it an exceptional book book. Daily always has some action and lots of good romance.
This is a well written story about the hardships in life and finally finding a place you can call home. Tanner and Rose both had pasts that had left them damaged. In finding each other they were able to follow the path to their future. It was a hard road to travel but, it made the journey worthwhile when they reached their destination. The characters and intriguing storyline pulls you in and keeps your interest until the end. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the darker elements of this book. I think it would have been a 5 star read if those dark elements had been toned down. I also have to say that this book could have triggers for some people. That being said I still feel like this is a great read and I would definitely recommend it.
TEXAS FREE by Janet Daley
Ortegas a couple who took her in as a child, now was her time for avenging what had.been done to them. Back at the homestead that was her grandfather’s, she was to inherit it. Did she, or what was the last changes. he made. It is a time for hiding and healing for her. There is Tanner, that is watching her too closely why is that. There is cattle rustling, is it connected to why she ran. Different plot that I have read by author, it was enjoyable, Given ARC by Kensington and Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.Ellen.Oceanside
This story and these characters grabbed my attention right from the beginning and kept me spellbound all the way through. It’s a nice blend of mystery, suspense, action, and romance. It has a lot going on as Rose Landro returns to Rimrock Ranch to claim what is rightfully hers. She may be hiding out from a Mexican cartel but returning to the ranch is even scarier. Tanner McCade is working undercover investigating a rash of cattle thefts when he meets Rose. He knows she’s hiding something but has no idea what. You need to read this one and experience the story for yourself. It’s well written and will keep you guessing what’s next. I highly recommend it.
From the beginning, the story started with a complex plot or rather plots. A young woman who is on the run from Mexico’s cartel, and goes to the land her grandfather left her. She left the USA 12 years before, when she was just teenager, after she committed a crime. Now that she shows up at the ranch of Bull, the man who helped her escape to Mexico and promised to keep her land, she discovers he had a different agenda. Bull, is not a likable man, and I have to confess, I found Rose, a tad hard to take.
Throw in cattle rustling and an undercover Special Ranger by the name of Tanner McCade, and you have a lot going on in the story.
The romance is secondary, since it’s more of a suspense story.
I have to confess I was taken aback at the beginning when I read the first chapter saying it was 1985. Don’t know if the book was published then , or it’s a retro/modern western suspense.
I was entrusted this copy by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
