The United States is on the brink of total collapse. The military has been reduced to near extinction, economic turmoil saps hope, and anarchy threatens, as world powers hover like vultures, eager to devour the remains. In a desperate move, a few powerful men call a secret meeting to plot the overthrow of the government.
Fifty-five men came to Philadelphia May of 1787 with a congressional … congressional charter to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead they founded the longest lasting republic in world history.
Tempest at Dawn tells their story.

A must read for anyone who wants to learn about the writing of our United States constitution, the brilliant men who contributed to it, the struggles and compromises that helped birth it, and the consequences and blessings of those steaming July days in Philadelphia. An amazing story!
Overall a good read. Interesting facts and interest on our founding fathers. Amazing to think how much thought, negotiations, and, compromise was put into the constitution by our founding fathers. At times it is as a little slow, but overall it was a good read.
Book provided a more even look at the convention than what you normally get in school. Shows that the founding fathers we’re in some ways no different than the current politians just perhaps a bit more civil.
My favorite book about the Constitutional Convention. I breathes life into the true story. He brings out how they debated the various points and conclusions. IT is truly a work of history, given character. A good description of Pennsylvania at that time. Also the underling politics. I have reread it more than once.
Although a novel, this book gave an insight into the writing of the Constitution. The intrigue, the competing for power, and the wisdom that led to the greatest nation on earth builds an understanding of the way it might have actually happened.
Amazing read. Brings to life the people and politics of the Constitutional Convention. Brilliant at portraying the men who were there – their strengths and foibles, and how they built the compromises that created a country from thirteen very different states.
Educational…..easy to read and understand
Wasn’t exactly sure if I was going to like this book. I LOVED it. Actually sorry that it ended. The real people in the book seemed like I really knew them. You won’t be sorry you that you have chosen this book. It’s amazing.
It certainly made me want to read more of the history of our country
Tempest at Dawn is the story of the founding fathers of the United States writing the Constitution in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. Totally fascinating These men worked hard day-after-day in the hot, humid days May-Sept. Much negotiation and compromise in order to resolve disagreements and conflicts. Some political intrigue and even …
Interesting insight to a period in the building of the post revolutionary United States
You’ll never hear anything about the US Constitution again without recalling this book. Extremely well written and researched. All historical fiction should be this good!
This is a novel, and, as such, the actions, events, dialogue and such may be inferred by facts, truncated, out of order, or two or more characters may be combined for clarity. They may not have even happened at all. However, as I did not have very good knowledge of the events surrounding the creation of the Constitution, I found it informative as …
Book helped me understand and appreciate the positive aspects of the federal government.
Great partly-fictionalized account of the creation of the US Constitution. Spell binding as it captures actual records from letters and archives and puts it together in a day-to-day account (not a story) of the actual history. Great read.
While I think my knowledge of history is better than average, this book drove home why we had the terrible institution of slavery recognized in our constitution, helping us born in the north in the 20th century understand better (I’m not saying I approve, I just understand the compromises that had to be made in order to form the country. …
Even though I read biographies about the first 7 presidents and many characters during the revolutionary war (Hamilton was my favorite) – I didn’t have a clear picture of how the country moved from a collection of 13 independent colonies to that of united states.
This book paints a realistic picture of how these 40+/- men moved from changing the …
A truly inspirational, heavily-historic novel of the constitutional founders. Extraordinary character development and learning experience. Great behind-the-scenes reality!
A new world of facts concerning the events of the Constitutional Convention off 1787. It is almost identical to many of the problems we have today in our country. The roles of Madison, Washington and all the others involved with the creation of our Constitution are so illuminating. The book helps to peel away much of the patriotic hubris of today.
Enjoyed the idea of how our constitution was developed.
