I really enjoyed this psychological thriller about a family whose competitive skier daughter has an accident, which turns their world upside down. J. T. Ellison has written a very good story about mental illness and the way it can manifest itself. Our world really needs to bring mental illness out in the open and discuss it and finds way to help people heal. It should be as important as finding a cure for physical ailments.
The author’s notes are very heartfelt as well, and I encourage everyone to read them.

My mother, a thriller junkie, told me I needed to listen to this one, so I plugged in my earphones and wow… This was my first Ellison book but most definitely not my last. The plot is fantastic. Starts out sweet and a little tragic and then takes one hell of a spin.
I cannot recommend this (audio)book enough. The cast picked for the audiobook did a sensational job!
This book was nonstop action from the first page. It was mesmerizing. One of the most original plots I’ve seen in a long time. I highly recommend it.
Liked it very much
With grace and courage, J.T. Ellison faces depression and suicide head on in a powerful and very personal exploration of family, what we do for love, and the shattering effects of secrets, lies, and mental illness on our lives. Written in the present tense, the action is intimate and intense – you are right there as these layered, very real characters are torn apart. As you are torn apart. Until, finally, this gifted author offers the hope of healing and redemption.
This is probably the best book I’ve ever read!!! Amazing from beginning to end….unbelievable!!!!
What a very twisted personality! This is one you need to go back and listen to the beginning again once you have finished to figure out what is really going on in the 1990s part of the book.
The literary treatment of the dog’s paperwork concerns me — the the public trend to pass off their pets as service and emotional support animals (ESAs), this novel is adding fuel to that fire. Kat was trained and rejected as an ESA for autistic children and victims of PTSD. Rejected, yet she has paperwork and a vest to allow her to go places ordinary pets can’t. Zack, Kat’s owner, is retired military, but never formally applied for an ESA, so although the dog might be quasi-qualified, the owner/handler is not. Furthermore, Kat attacks and bites a person, requiring 30+ stitches with absolutely no repercussions. ESAs are not trained to disarm perps, those are police/military dogs. The author did not really do her homework here.
3 stars, I WILL look for others by this author.
Great Read!!
Very good book, but sad as well. I had a hard time putting it down.
I could see the ending early on, but it still held surprises.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book. I liked the multiple narrators and felt pulled into the story by virtue of their fantastic performances. I give this book 4 stars because of the subject matter. One secret, no matter how small, no matter how well concealed, no matter how justified, can absolutely tear you apart.
This is a chilling, and compelling story that I listened to in audio. I had a hard time stopping so I could go to sleep, as I was totally caught up in the mystery of Mindy’s parentage & the connection to the two women we meet in the opening of the book.
Definitely a can’t put it down page turner. I left all my chores aside to finish this book in one day. It’s that good. So much is happening. A ski accident, cancer, DNA testing, secrets, a mental hospital, self harm and suicide, child abduction and more. It kept me on the edge of my seat!
Although I figured it out, I still enjoyed reading it to the end!! A great story!
A mother’s world is turned upside down when a skiing accident lands her daughter in the hospital. This was a thrilling page turner with twists and turns, dark psychological tones, and constant tension.
TEAR ME APART by J.T. Ellison is electrifying! You’ll start out thinking one thing, and by the end of the book it’s all turned upside down. My first read by this author will most definitely NOT be my last. The author has a natural way of detailing vivid details in a relaxed way that makes you feel like you aren’t being inundated with new info at ever turn, even though the story is quickly developing into more than we were ever expecting.
Mindy Wright is a 17 year old skiing sensation, but when a crash ends her season and sends her to the hospital with a broken leg, she never expects that this will be the least of her worries shortly. While in surgery to repair the damage to her leg, doctors discover she has an aggressive form of leukemia that quickly turns into a nightmare. When she’s in need of a bone marrow transplant, imagine the surprise when it comes to light that her parents aren’t really her parents!
Secrets unravel as the plot goes back in time here and there to bring us the story surrounding how she came to be raised by Lauren and Jasper … and as it all starts to get a little too close to the truth, danger starts lurking it’s ugly head!
I highly recommend this story to anyone who loves a story filled with intrigue, secrets and lies. There is an amazing story underneath these secrets and watching it unfold is riveting!
Amazing
Phenomenal read. Dark, chilling, fascinating and downright twisted. Grabs you from the get go and you’re left breathless with anticipation each chapter right on up till the end. A highly recommended read.
This book has it all, a domestic thriller, intense twist, and unpredictable plot.
If you like books with twists and turns that keep you guessing to the end, you’ll love this one! Lauren is a very complex character with a tainted past, who only wants the best for her daughter, Mindy. When Mindy is diagnosed with leukemia and Lauren is not a match for a stem-cell transplant, her perfectly constructed world of lies and deception comes crashing down. She does her best to deflect suspicion onto her daughter’s birth father, Zach, and tries to silence the investigations her sister, Juliet, is conducting. In the end, you realize what a calculating and manipulative person Lauren is. She is convinced that everything she’s done has been in Mindy’s best interest, including murder. The ending is bittersweet, in that Mindy realizes all her dreams and silently acknowledges Lauren, who is in prison.
It is very sad how depressed Vivian, Mindy’s birth mom, had become and that she felt that Zach and the baby would be better of without her. Depression is a real thing, and so many of those suffering do not reach out. The author has a great note at the end that addresses the mental health stigma many carry with them.
