I’ve read Dear Ava by and absoutely love it.
Dear Ava is a riveting, sensual and emotional Young Adult novella with an inspiring heroine, an alluring hero and a powerful message. Ava has not had an easy life — to say the least — but she is a fighter and determined to succeed, especially if her success will also help her little brother. She returns to her elite private high school (on scholarship) after gut-wrenching, tragic experience that rocked the entire school. She’s not welcomed back — to put it lightly — but, again, she’s fierce and gets back up every time she’s knocked down. When she starts receiving mysterious notes from an admirer, she bristles and wonders if they are sincere while also being captivated by them. The sender is slowly revealed, and my eyes were glued to the page to find out how this romance would play out. It’s swoon-worthy, tender and steamy while packing an emotional punch. I’m intentionally being very vague in this review, because I want people to go into the story completely blind.
While I have this anthology sitting on my Kindle, it came as an ARC late this weekend and I haven’t had a chance to read it in its entirety. That being said, I will be updating this in the next couple of days to offer insight into the other stories in this anthology. Needless to say, I’m very excited to read stories from my favorite authors like Kennedy Ryan, Sara Ney, and Charleigh Rose, among others.
What I’d like to focus this review to is Ilsa Madden-Mills’s story, “Dear Ava,” a novella set in Camden Prep Academy. It’s been some time since we’ve read a Madden-Mills’s story set in high school, and it reads like “going home.” This story follows the dual perspectives of Ava and Knox. These characters sit at different economic and popularity spectrums at Camden: Ava is poor while Knox is wealthy and the QB of the football team, as well as the head of the Sharks, an exclusive group at Camden. From the outset, nothing seems right for these two, but nothing is ever as it seems.
This story is an important one as it deals with the topic of sexual assault. Madden-Mills is careful here to illustrate the importance of seeking help, but this story is more about the aftermath. It’s about the ways in which seemingly opposites attract even when they don’t make sense on paper.
There is so much about this story that I loved. Knox as a hero is fraught. From the outside, he seems cold and unfeeling. Yet, as the story progresses, we find out about the hurts that exist deep within him. He’s responsible for more than himself, and his story illustrates the idea that money does not buy happiness or fix problems. There is a tenderness to Knox that the reader eventually sees, and this humanizes him in such a way that you want him and Ava to come together.
Ava is so brave. Even though Knox tells us this, given her situation, you can’t help but love her moxie, her heart. She has every right to run and hide, avoiding Camden forever. Yet, she never thinks solely about her self. She sacrifices her own peace for her brother. And you can’t help but admire her for it.
Together, these two are special. I am thankful that Madden-Mills is developing this story into a full-length novel because, as you will read, it simply isn’t enough. There are all kinds of open threads to this story, and you will finish reading it wanting more. At least, that is how I read it.
Just remember, though, that this is an important story, one that is bigger than its romance. It’s a story that reminds us of resiliency and sacrifice. It’s a tale about finding love even when it’s easier to hate. If you haven’t downloaded this anthology yet, you really should. Ilsa Madden-Mills’s “Dear Ava” alone is definitely worth this purchase.

THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE by Kate Stewart
Lance and Harper are spicy from the beginning. This story is fun and exciting right from the start. This book is part of a HIGHLY anticipated series. Eek! So good and what a tease. I can’t wait for the conclusion of this story after The Guy On The Left.
ARENA LIGHTS by Mandi Beck
Plan for hilarious and sexy. This is about a guy falling for his buddy’s younger twin sister. It is college hockey player meets softball player. Benny and Mauve kept me laughing. (Tapping finger on chin) hmmmm I think there is going to be more to this story at a later date. I am guessing the siblings will be offering up more drama. Haha.
BODY HEAT Rochelle Paige
Sera and Rowen have a unique story to tell. He is a football player and she becomes his body guard because he has a stalker. What a sexy story and I love the tough girl Sera. Rowen… NUM. the intrigue adds some flavor to this story. Wink.
GUYS LIKE YOU Charleigh Rose
Holy Hotness… this story is SEXY! Halston and Zach start out with some steamy interactions. Ummm no instalove here though cause our girl has been burned and makes Zach do some chasing. Delicious read. Wink
FAST BREAK: A HOOPS NOVELLA Kennedy Ryan
This story I can’t hardly talk about without getting a little chocked up. It not only was an amazing love story but so insightful and inspiring, I actually highlighted it like crazy. I want to remember all the words and the way it made me feel. Quinn aka America’s Titanium Sweetheart aka Bionic Beauty was an athlete who due to an injury had a leg amputated. After some rough days she becomes a motivational speaker. Ean is a basketball coach who listens to her speak and uncharacteristically pursues her. He hasn’t really had a lot of long term relationships and has always focused on coaching. He is so impressive in the way he is dedicated in try to show her he is interested. She on the other hand has some reservations. You learn why ask the story progresses. Ean IS AMAZING! I love both these characters but who he is innately as a man is impressive. Everyone needs to read this one.
END GOAL Ella Fox
Addison and Law’s story has a messy beginning. In fact I wasn’t sure I was ever going to like Law. I WAS SO WRONG! Figuring out a way to ask forgiveness especially when looking at the mistakes of our youth is never easy. I love how Law finds redemption and has redefined himself especially in the eyes of Addison. Umm the babies add a sweetness to this tale that made my ovaries twinge. Haha.
THE TEACHING HOURS Sara Ney
OMG disclaimer here. I am addicted to this author and her sarcastic often irreverent sense of humor. Rex (major douche from another read) is our leading man. I LLLOOOVVVEEDDD him from the beginning story. He really does acknowledge his missteps but has mad up for it tenfold in my opinion. Hannah our heroine is ridiculous and has no filter. Sooo FUNNY! Her trying to get Rex to help her communicate with men better takes this story to all kinds of levels of cray cray. Oh Rex with Lily (the two year old) had me laughing so hard I thought I would wet myself. Your welcome for the overshare. Yes I am being cryptic here. Read this story to know what I mean. Wink.
A SLICE OF LOVE Teagan Hunter
Jonas and Frankie have history and major communication issues. Jonas is trying to overcome an injury and get into the NFL. Frankie feels used and forgotten by what she sees as unforgivable on Jonas’ part. Eek as the story progresses you learn the truth. Ugh let’s say one of them has some MESSED UP family. Umm side note, these two spice up the page very well. Sigh. Excellent story that leaves you realizing there is always more to tell. Wink.
LOVE GAME Emma Scott
Hang on in this story. Temperamental tennis player meets holistic massage therapist. Both Kai and Daisy have some major trauma they are dealing with. I love the message of this book. Love helps but it isn’t always the quick fix it often portrayed to be. I do love how they show that investing in a relationship can help on the journey to healing. Ugh I REALLY LOVED the service dog part of this story. So GOOD! Hug.
HOLT’S STORY Meghan Quinn
Preconceived biases and notions can be a dangerous thing. This story has hot drunk baseball player interested in student, diner waitress who dislikes him on principle along. It is so sexy and funny how he doesn’t take no for an answer and continues the pursuit the next day. I love Holt and the temperamental Harmony. They have some of the best dialogue that kept me laughing. Plan for a cliffy here. Eek. Yes, Meghan you are a bit of a brat to leave me hanging but you aren’t alone in this Anthology. HAHA.
DEAR AVA Ilsa Madden-Mills
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this story and characters. Ugh I need the rest of it. I want to know all. Who did it? Why did they do it? Ava is amazing. She is willing to fight for answers and is motivated to fulfill her dreams. Life has not been kind but she is a fighter who still has a heart but she only offers it up to a select few. Hhmmm we get a taste of who Knox is and his role in what happened to Ava. I need to know more. EEK! Social class, the hierarchy in high school, and sexual assault are a part of this story’s telling. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CONCLUSION.
I have never read an Anthology where all the stories resonated with me in some way until now. Definitely 5 star worthy book across the board. Happy Reading EVERYONE! XOXO.
So far, I’ve only read Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden Mills. If her story is any indication as to how the other stories go, I can’t wait!
Ava and Knox’s story was amazing. It is set in high school but is more NA. I can’t wait to read more about them. Definitely worth one clicking!
Team Player 2: A Sports Anthology
The Guy In The Middle by Kate Stewart:
Oh man! Lance and Harper have both tugged at my heart strings. I cannot wait until we get the full story in January of 2020. There’s so much pain in their pasts and so much that they could be in the future. Together they are beautiful and intense. Their connection and chemistry is fantastic. This was a great short read!
Arena Lights by Mandi Beck:
A fun story by Mandi. Maeve is one of the “off-limits” twins dubbed by her older hockey player brother. Benny Hayes is hot, sexy and a bad boy player. He’s also her older brothers roommate and teammate. He’s always known who she was but didn’t realize how she effected him until they took a team trip to Arizona. Sparks fly and the tension is high. It could be a fun fling or it could burn to the ground when his clingy past makes itself known.
Body Heat by Rochelle Paige:
A short and hot story. Rowan is a hot football player who’s in a bit of danger. He needs a security team to surround him and no one does it better than the new team his agent hired. Sera is a feisty, bad a%#, woman who could take him down if she wanted to. Instead, it’s her job to stay right beside him and protect him from the unknown threat he has hanging over his shoulders. It doesn’t take long for them to each realize the attraction goes more than skin-deep.
Guys Like You by Charleigh Rose:
Halston and Sully = just yum. Lust at first sight. Past betrayals make it hard for her to trust more than superficial layers. There something about her, he can’t get enough and wants more-for the first time ever. Together they explode with heat and passion. Taking those next steps may be too much for either of them to handle.
Fast Break: A Hoops Novella by Kennedy Ryan:
Whew! Leaky eyes!! What a beautiful and meaningful quick story. Kennedy has a way with rods and this one doesn’t fall short. Quinn has overcome so much in her life but when the possibility of a future with Jag presents itself, it leaves her running scared. She’s the first one who’s ever made him feel this way and he won’t stop until she’s where she belongs, in his arms. Fantastic story!
End Goal by Ella Fox:
A quick second chance romance with an over the top sexy guy and two sweet little munchkins. Addison and Law have known each other for years and their attraction was intense. 10 years ago they gave in and 10 years ago it all fell apart. Circumstances have forced them to be present in one another’s lives again and that intensity hasn’t gone away. The pain of the past gets pushed under the surface so they can focus on the two sweet lives that are in their care but it doesn’t take long for it to rise up and bubble over. Intense, hot and sweet. A great story!
The Teaching Hours by Sara Ney:
I adore the Douchebag series by Sara and this novella is just as good. Hannah is awkward, weird and doesn’t act like your typical girl. Rex has had his issues in the past and has been a real douche. An introduction on the campus dating app inadvertently causes sparks to fly. It’s a short, hot and fun story!
A Slice of Love by Teagan Hunter:
I love the humor and wit that Teagan outs into her stories. There’s nothing like her books. Jonas and Frank have known each other since high school. They had a special connection back then that culminated into one fantastic night but that quickly crumbled into pain and heartache. Years later they’re back in town together again. That connection never left, even though the hurt masks it. They’ll have to fight through the pain to find forgiveness to move forward.
Love Game by Emma Scott:
Daisy and Kai were beautiful together. Each damaged and in pain in their own way, together they were able to battle the demons they held inside and overcome. It was a beautiful story.
Holt’s Story by Meghan Quinn:
Oh she’s right! I do wanna kill Meghan. This Novella was fantastic and will eventually be a book. Holt and Harmony have a fantastic connection. I love the snark and the tension. So many quips and the entire thing was hilarious. I cannot wait for the full story. But, she leaves us with good news. The Locker Room and The Dugout, 2 books featuring Knox and Carson are already out. Jason’s story will be out in the end November 2019 and then she promises Holt’s story will soon follow. Fantastic times ahead!
Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills:
This novella picked me up, shook me around and tossed me back out on my rear. What a fantastic story. I’m hooked and I know it will be turned into a series coming in 2020 and I cannot wait.
Ava is different than everyone else around her. She the scholarship kid, the poor girl, the one without parents and without money. She’s surrounded by the elite and at one point she gives in and tries to fit in. Devastation occurs. Damaged and broken yet stronger and willing to fight for the answers she needs, she enters the world of the elite once again. Knox is there. He’s King in this world, everyone bows to him. But he’s different too, they just don’t see it. But she does. Slowly, with acids spitting from her lips, she lets him in. A connection, one neither of them expected, forms. Fear is there but the hope for something more allows them to take that step forward.
It’s freaking beautiful. Emotional, sexy, snark-ish, and gripping. It leaves you wanting more.
I absolutely loved this sports anthology! It includes some of my favorite authors (Ilsa Madden-Mills and Meghan Quinn) as well as some completely new to me authors. I thoroughly enjoyed every single story in this anthology which is pretty rare for me. I should have known I would love it considering I am a complete sucker for sports romances. My two favorite stories were definitely Dear Ava and The Strike Out.
Dear Ava absolutely gutted me but I did not want it to end! Ilsa Madden-Mills is a fantastic writer and really outdid herself with Dear Ava. Told in dual first person (alternating chapters), we get a story that starts with a very touchy subject but ends up with giving us hope. I loved Ava and Knox and cannot wait for the expanded story in 2020.
The Strike Out finally gives us Holt’s story! We met Holt in The Locker Room and his mystery girl was heavily alluded to. I was so happy to finally meet Harmony and get Holt’s story. As always Meghan wrote a fantastic story I couldn’t put down.
** spoiler alert ** Read, Kate Stewart’s novella Fair catch, about Lance Prescott and his journey through his last year of college, football, boxing, ranching and the girl of his dreams. Y’all gonna wanna read his story, so good, so realistic! Love Kate’s work.
I read Dear Ava in this anthology. I LOVED it! Ilsa Madden-Mills never fails to write stories with characters that you just can’t get enough of. I was completely taken with Ava and Knox. When I finished reading, my only thought was, MORE, MORE, MORE! And apparently, there will be more! Ava and Knox will have their own book next year. I can’t wait! If all the stories in this anthology are as intoxicating as Dear Ava, then this is one DO-NOT-MISS book! Grab it!
I can’t wait to go through and read all the novellas in this book. All these authors are amazing. But the first one I did read was Dear Ava. I loved this story so much; it gives me Dirty English vibes in that Ilsa tackles a very sensitive subject. I love the realness that Ilsa brings to this story and the feelings it elicits. This story does have some triggers, but it is beautifully written and should be read by all.
I know this was just a taste of what’s to come for Ava and Knox in 2020 and I can’t wait to see how their story plays out. I’m already invested in them so fully and so excited for their completed story. This story jumps right into the nitty gritty and sucks you into the story. Even though you don’t get explicit details of what happens to Ava Ilsa’s words show you how she’s feeling and how scared she is. You can feel it through the pages and your heart will immediately hurt for her. She’s from the wrong side of the tracks and living in a group home. She’s on scholarship at Camden Prep and needs to graduate to make a better life for herself and her brother. And even though she went through something horrible she doesn’t let it derail her from her ultimate goals.
“She’s definitely a spark that just might ignite and catch on fire.”
When you’re first introduced to Knox you don’t know what to think of him. Ilsa wrote it so you are suspicious of everyone. But as the story progresses you know you read him wrong. He may be QB 1 but he is so different then the others. Him and Ava have this spark that comes to life whenever they are near each other. And even though she’s scared he let’s her take out her fear on him. He allows her to vent at him and makes herself feel a little stronger in the process. Knox is brooding and closed off but something about Ava calls to him their connection is to strong to be ignored.
“Kissing him is like freefalling into hot fire, and maybe I should be afraid of this, but I crave the way his chest against mine burns, the way it ignites every atom inside me.”
I’m seriously obsessed with them and am now counting down the days until 2020 and we get the conclusion to their story. This may have been a novella, but it grabs you from the start and holds you captive throughout ending too soon but thoroughly enjoyed none the less.
Fast Break by Kennedy Ryan
More Hoops. More Quinn and Ean. What a couple. I’m a huge Hoops fan and to be back with August, Banner, Deck and now Quinn and Ean is like getting an early Christmas present. Ryan excels in writing strong , determined and fierce women and Quinn is just that. She had to have a her leg amputated. At first her world crumpled but she slowly picked herself up from the ground and fought back. She used it to her advantage. To her strength. Man, how I cheered for her and also for Ean who chased her because he wanted her. Wanted to know her. The real Quinn and not the Titanium woman or the public persona. Their first date was so good. Filled with tension and humor. The slutty Vegan;)
Their date doesn’t go as planned but Ean is not a quitter.
The epilogue. Oh my gawd!!!!! Perfection.
5 Bionic Beauty Stars
Fair Catch by Kate Stewart
When I met Lance in The Guy On The Right I was intrigued. Especially since he was such a recluse and did his own thing trying not to draw attention to himself. The note he gave Theo only made me wonder about him even more. Who is this Lance Prescott? Well, let me tell you all Lance Prescott is a good man. A man who loves his family dearly and will do anything for them.
Harper Elliott is Lance’s opposite and they but heads immediately leaving no doubts of tantalizing chemistry. Harper is not a woman to hold back when she’s got something on her heart. She’s pretty damn awesome. The enemies to lovers feel made giddy cause their bantering was so good, full of tease and heat. A certain dance scene didn’t just leave Lance with a boner. I got my very own lady boner thanks to Harper;)
A common interest and fascination which slowly forms into a friendship that evolves into more. But it’s not without complications and hurt feelings. It’s funny, sexy as hell and such an entertaining ride to be a part of.
Fair Catch is a novella but it doesn’t feels like one. It’s filled with so much emotion, well developed characters I don’t want to leave behind. A knockout indeed.
5 Ding Ding Stars
While at this point I’ve only read one of the authors stories in this book, but all the authors included are wonderful authors whom I read regularly and love. So far this review is for Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills. It is a great beginning to a soon to be full length novel. It is well written with some angst. While the Hero is supposed to be this cocky popular rich jock, we slowly get to see his vulnerable and even sweet side. The Heroine is a strong survivor and fighter. She had been assaulted and came back to ‘the scene of the crime’ many months later a stronger person determined to find out who attacked her. While the subject matter is of a heavier nature there is some lightness to the story and a little humor thrown in here and there. This is only the beginning of the story and we can tell there is more to it, but it also does not end in a cliffhanger, so if you go no further, you can feel somewhat satisfied with the ending. There are lots of unknowns going on with the characters (including the side characters) and so there is some mystery involved (that I assume will come to light in the full book.) It alternates POVs. It is quick and easy to read. While there is no sexual content, there is talk about the assault which may be a trigger for some sensitive readers.
*I received an ARC of this portion of the book.
A new book by Ilsa Madden-Mills? You know I’m going to read that! Of course she didn’t disappoint!
Dear Ava was amazing. I loved every single thing about this book and it left me wanting more. I loved Ava and Knox and I cannot wait for more of their story. Thank you Ilsa for another wonderful story!
5 Stars!
I haven’t read all the novellas yet but the ones I have read were all five star reads for me.
The Guy In The Middle by Kate Stewart.
5 stars.
This is one enemies to lovers romance that’s really hard to put down and it will leave you wanting more from Lance and Harper. These two are so easy to like, the attraction between them, the banter, the hate that changes to something else, they are so good together you can’t help but like them. Another fantastic book from this author.
Arena Lights by Mandi Beck
5 stars.
I loved this novella. Maeve and her twin Millie are heading to a softball clinic when their brother Levi drops the bomb that his friend and team mate Benny will be joining them as a chaperone. Millie is brilliant, the grudge she holds because Benny is going to spoil her fun entertained me no end. The more time Maeve and Benny spend together the harder it is for them to ignore the chemistry between them. This is a great, quick read that I definitely recommend.
Guys Like You by Charleigh Rose.
5 stars
I’m not sure how Charleigh Rose manages to make a novella feel like a full length book but somehow she does. Halston and Sully’s story was everything I wanted. What starts off as a hook up ends with Halston sneaking out the next morning and Sully realising he’s just not ready to let her go and he’s not giving up. The chemistry between these two is hot and Sully was surprisingly sweet. These two are definitely two of my favourite characters and I loved their story.
Holts Story by Meghan Quinn.
5 stars
OMG Holt!!! He’s one of a kind that’s for sure. I adored Holt. From his sexy self confidence to his sense of humour, Holt is to die for. Harmony definitely has her work cut out for her trying to keep Holt at arms length (although why you’d want to is a mystery to me). The one and only complaint I have, and I know I’m not alone, is that ending. Talk about a bloody tease Ms Quinn!
Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills.
5 stars
Ava returns to school after a traumatic event a different girl to the one she was before. She’s stronger and determined not to let her past effect her future in a negative way. She’s very easy to like.
Knox is very intriguing from the start. As head Shark, he’s the last person Ava should be around but there’s more to him than meets the eye. This one definitely left me wanting more and I can’t wait for the full novel to be released.
Review for Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills
I’m a huge Ilsa fan. That woman can write about unicorns and skittles and I’d still read whatever she wrote. Spider has always been my favorite book by her, until now.
Dear Ava is not your average sports story, it’s powerful, heartbreaking and beautiful. Now only was it perfectly written (I mean, it’s Ilsa, c’mon) but it was enchanting. From the moment I read the novella, I couldn’t put it down. I inhaled it.
It’s a story that needs to be told. It will crush your heart and soul. Ava showed such bravery that it will leave you in awe of her. Ava’s strength will inspire you. Also, I call dibs on Knox.
I can promise you that this story was depth, angst and everything that makes an Ilsa book perfect. This novella was perfect. I can’t wait for more!
So many incredible authors that I love in one book! I have only read Dear Ava so far!
Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills 5 Stars
This short novella was truly amazing. I adored Ava and Knox so much they had so much chemistry I could not get enough of them. With heartbreaking, sweet and laugh out loud moments it was an amazing start and such a tease for the rest of their story that’s to come in 2020.
I can’t wait for more!
This book does come with a trigger warning but doesn’t go into graphic detail of the assault.
ARC was kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
My 5 Star review of Dear Ava:
I absolutely loved Knox and Ava’s story. It kept me fascinated from the first page to the last and I can’t wait to read more of them in a full length novel coming early 2020. This novella was the perfect teaser for what’s to come, but just enough to leave me satisfied while I wait.
Ava’s strength and her ferocity when it comes to facing her fears is inspirational. Knox is definitely intriguing, and he and Ava together are fire. Their banter is perfection and the chemistry is off the charts. I cannot wait to read their whole story.
This review is for Love Game by Emma Scott. I received an advance copy and so far, it’s the only novella I’ve read in this anthology full of outstanding authors. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Team Player 2 anthology.
Love Game by Emma Scott is a contemporary, sports romance told in first person, dual POV. It explores the relationship between Daisy Watson, a novice healer, and Kai Solomon, a hot-tempered tennis pro.
The Australian Open is coming up, but due to his many outbursts, Kai is on the verge of being banned from tennis entirely. So his agent hires Daisy to help him control his anger. Kai and Daisy are both damaged from past traumas, struggling to move forward and live in the aftermath. As they connect and spend time together, they help each other find the healing needed to overcome their demons.
A beautiful story full of romance, humor, depth, and emotion. A highly recommended, 5-star read.
*** I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC. ***
Rievting…intriguing … and deliciously quick Isla dose it yet again she bring it their is no stopping her I couldn’t get enough..
Dear Ava blew my mind this entire anthology was addictive..
Her writing has a spell on me and I can’t wait for more..
“5 Stars!”
Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills
What an amazing novella by Ms. Madden-Mills with all new characters and a storyline that will make your heart break as well as put hope back in your heart. This story tugs at you in all the right ways, and I can’t wait until next year for the complete novel. For a novella, it almost felt like a complete story. It has angst, attitude, and heart, with Ava being sassy and smart. I definitely would like to know more about her!
Wow, I could not put down Dear Ava. This novella pulls you in and will have you wanting more of Knox and Ava. Ava has been through a lot and still is strong to continue on for what’s best. Ava returns to school and runs into Knox. These two have chemistry, but want to ignore each other and just get through the year. Fate has other plans. Ava will melt your heart and you won’t but help root for her and to find the truth. Knox appears like a king of the school jock, but you start to see a new side to him. Read this story and you will want more. I can’t wait to read the rest of this amazing anthology.
