Ex-deputy and former private investigator Vince Tanzi is a family man now, and there is no longer any room for staking out motels and chasing after bad guys. Not with a nine-month-old kid in the back seat. Vince has reluctantly retired to focus on child rearing, recovering from a near-fatal injury, and the occasional knitting project. That is, until his best friend’s mother vanishes without … explanation.
The third Tanzi adventure takes him to southernmost Florida and closer to the Equator when the trail leads offshore. He is up against the Pimentel family, formerly of the Hialeah numbers racket, but now respectable citizens. Sort of. He is also up against his own personal issues, including a tenuous marriage and some unwelcome distractions.
Follow Vince Tanzi into the tropical heat as he reunites with Roberto, Sonny, and a host of vivid characters while he untangles a blood feud that has turned deadly.

Good read
Eager to read number five. Tanzi keeps evolving and the changes are engaging. Many …no, most series about one main character keep that character consistent and just change the story. I enjoy several like that. Yet, Tanzi changes with life changes and I’m enjoying that as well.
Vince Tanzi is a man of contradictions, some, none, of all of which may be the consequence of having been shot in the head. And, no, this isn’t another novel about someone who gained mystical powers following a traumatic event. Like all of us, he’s normal in his own abnormal way. He’s intelligent in some ways and incredibly naive in others, religious yet profane, just if not necessarily lawful, quick to judge but also to recognize his own frailties, devoted to his 9-month-old son, but not always, especially if someone else needs his help more. He’s the kind of guy you’d like to have as a neighbor,
Similarly, Tanzi’s friends are contradictions too. Just when you think you can pigeon- hole one of them, they do something unexpected. While sometimes what they do isn’t very nice, this makes them more believable.
Not surprisingly, the plot of Tanzi’s Game is filled with contradictions. As Vince delves into the disappearance of a neighbor’s wife, he gets drawn into the workings of what at first seem like those of the Cuban Mafia, but turn out to be far more complex yet simple once all the pieces fall into place. But this is not a simplistic tale. Dennis isn’t one of those writers who keeps reiterating details or makes the important ones blindingly obvious. For example, it became clear that backgammon, a game about which I knew absolutely nothing, played a key role in the plot. But before I could stress out because the more detailed explanation of the game confused me, the plot moved on and the role of the game’s essence–which I got–became clear.
Vince, the other characters, and the plot of Tanzi’s Game are all genuine in their their own way. And they all fit right in with all the contractions and inherent in US, south Florida, and Cuban politics and family life.
Tanzi stayed with me long after finishing this book. He is so gritty and imperfect – I’m looking forward to reading more about him and his adventures.
Love the Florida locations, close to home.
I’ll read anything he writes. It was that good!

Had to pay attention to plot to keep it all straight. Not sure I liked all the characters…
I read it in spite of the chintzy cover and it was quite good and enjoyable.
