I showed up on his doorstep. At midnight. Missing 45 years’ worth of time.I’m Cassie Gearhart, and the last thing I remember, I cast a spell in 1974. Then, I woke up on a rainy July night to find it was 2019. And the entire Willow Creek Coven—my coven—was gone.Well, there is one witch left in Willow Creek, Virginia: Nick Felson, the grandson of my high priestess, a brooding farm boy with magic in … priestess, a brooding farm boy with magic in his blood and a chip on his shoulder.
Every time we get too close, love—the most powerful of magicks—draws us together. The passion? It threatens to be our undoing.
There’s a whole host of other problems, though. For one, Nick wants nothing to do with magic—and therefore, with me, a witch lost in time.
For another, the sinister magic that took the coven? It’s not finished with us.
It’s barely getting started.
Don’t miss the first book in the Tangled Magic Series, perfect for fans of the witchy magic of Charmed and for anyone seeking paranormal romance with a small-town setting!

Tangled Roots (Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic Series Book 1) by Denise D. Young. I really enjoyed this book. Its the story of Cassie who practices magic and when her brother threatens to take her home so she can’t practice magic so she begs the Goddess to hide her from him. When she comes out of hiding she doesn’t even know where she is. When she went into hiding it was 1976, when she wakes up its 45 years later. The place she awakens is where she cast her last spell. All of her coven is gone except for a guy named Nick and he hates magic and refuses to practice it. Once they meet sparks fly and romance is in full bloom. Cassie is a strong willed, stubborn and a very smart lady and Nick is smitten with her. Will their relationship work out having to deal with this new world she’s awaken to or will she sadly end up back with her abusive family! Read Tangled Roots to find out!
Wow. The first chapter was enough to hook me. What a fascinating tale that unfolded. I loved seeing the different dynamic between family and coven and how magic can be manipulated for both good and evil. I really enjoy the author’s writing style and how she developed the characters. It was a mesmerizing story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I just finished the book, and I have to say I’m sad it ended. It is very well written and I found myself invested in the story. Cassie and Nick are excellent lead characters. They are both very relatable and I found myself rooting for them. I loved all of the plot twists throughout the book. Tangled Roots is a great book for anyone who likes romance and magic! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
I am a sucker for a good time travel book. (Hello Outlander). So reading this I was looking forward to seeing how this unique story out. I am happy to say it didn’t let me down. From the start, I was pulled in. Cassie’s backstory is one of sadness and pain. Add a dash of magic and 45 years into the future. You then meet Nick. Oh boy, this series is something I can really get behind.
The Willow Creek Coven has been a sanctuary for witches for many years and it’s no different for Cassie. When her brother threatens to take her home where she can’t practice magic, she begs the Goddess to keep her hidden from him. When the Goddess brings her out of hiding, Cassie steps into a world she doesn’t recognize anymore and the coven consists of only one man who refuses to practice magic anymore. Things will have to change though because a shadow is settling over Willow Creek and more than just the witches’ lives are at stake.
This surprised me in the best of ways and I really enjoyed my time reading this. It’s super quick and pretty short but it feels like the author covered enough to really make the story feel well rounded. One of my favorite parts is the small details of connecting the four elements to different creatures who represent them and asking for their blessings before practicing magic. I’ll be interested to see what happens next, especially with the romance. It felt a little quick but with the details included in the book, it didn’t feel forced.
Tangled Roots (Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic Series Book 1) by Denise D. Young – Review by Michelle Collier
Rating 5 out of 5
I just finished Tangled Roots by Denise D Young. I think I may have to take a moment and take a deep breath because this was one of the best books I’ve read. The characters are alive and you feel their emotions so strongly. The descriptions in this book just drew me in and I felt like I was living the story not just reading it. Cassie and Nick must both face the past they have been running from. I cannot wait to read the next book!
“Be careful what you wish for.” It is a perfect way to describe the deal Cassie made with a Goddess in 1974. In desperation to stay out of her abusive families clutches Cassie strikes a deal that may have saved her, but it has also trapped her in time. Fast forward 45 years and she reawakens in the woods where she cast her last spell. What she doesn’t realize is that the whole world is a different place, her coven and high priestess are all gone and all that is left is a male witch named Nick. Problem is he hates magic and won’t use the power he has.
Although there is a 45 year gap between then and now and the story itself is fast paced, Denise D. Young made the entire story and character development flow naturally. Not many authors can do that so eloquently. That alone gives this book 5 stars in my opinion. This story was also filled with magic, adventure, love and passion and I loved every minute of it. I cannot wait to read the next book.
Tangled Roots (Tangled Magic 1)
By Denise D. Young
4 stars
Tangled Roots was a really nice read – I thoroughly enjoyed it. The blurb sounded really intriguing to me so I was excited to start reading and it didn’t disappoint. I was easily drawn into the story and loved the authors magical way of writing, such a great, creative imagination. I liked the characters, Cassie and Nick, they were well thought out and planned. There was a definitely spark between these two characters that wasn’t forced, it was a genuine connection that they had and I loved following their relationship. I think this is definitely one of my favourite paranormal reads and I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this series and author.
I really loved this witchy read from Denise D. Young! Tangled Roots is the first book in the Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic Series, and it is a great kick off. I loved Cassie and Nick, and the supporting characters as well. This is full of magic and adventure that keeps the story flowing so that you never find yourself bored. In fact I read this one in one short sitting because I had to know how it would end before I put it down. I was impressed that the time jump part did not get confusing because I often find those to be a tad confusing in paranormal or sci fi books so that made me even more happy. I am excited to see how this series will unfold and progress!
Tangled Roots (Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic Book 1) by Denise D. Young. If you’re looking for a book that’s got just about everything in it you could possibly want go get this one right now. I typically need to be very in a paranormal type stories. But this one had no problem grabbing my attention and keeping me firmly hooked from start to finish. Each character brings something unique to the storyline and they pulled me into their world with ease and I loved getting lost in the pages with them. This was a bit of a faster feeling paced storyline but it wasn’t rushed and lacking in that regard. It’s easy to read and has a great storyline. The author does a wonderful job of making a story world you love being in. I’m giving this a four star review and highly recommend it. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
Tangled Roots (Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic #1) – Denise D. Young
4-stars
Tangled Roots was an entertaining paranormal read. It’s the first book in this series and a great start to a series it is, I look forward to reading more of it asap.
I loved all of the detail that this author wrote with, right from the beginning I was intrigued as I could clearly picture everything playing out in my mind. It felt as if I was right there with these characters with all of the detail.
I do feel like the ending of this story came really quickly and I would have loved to read this story for longer to get answers to all of my questions.
I look forward to reading more from this author!
Tangled Roots by Denise D. Young is the first book in the Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic series. This is a great paranormal story that felt like it had a bit of everything to keep you interested. I really enjoyed the premise of this book.
It felt a little different to others I have read in the genre which made it even more enjoyable. I loved the two characters as well. They were so different and yeh worked so well together. It worked perfectly in the context of this story and the roles they had.
I think this is a great start to a new series and I am already looking forward to book two.
‘Tangled Roots’ marks the first entry of Denise D. Young’s ‘Tangled Magic’ series. It tells the story of Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Gearhart, a witch who is thrust forty-five years into the future to an unfamiliar 2019 with no recollection as to how or why. Suddenly finding herself without the support of her coven, Cassie finds solace in the arms of one Nicholas ‘Nick’ Felson— the grandson of her dear friend and the last witch left in Willow Creek after mysterious events that Nick is reluctant to disclose. For a story centering around witches and the mystical, a deep and rich magic system is key, and ‘Tangled Roots’ nails this aspect. Young explores the intricacies and rules of the magic that the witches wield in a way that isn’t just mere, dull exposition— she takes the time to actually show readers how their powers work through, for instance, the characters performing magic themselves, rather than outright telling the audience. Through the use of vivid and striking descriptions, Young establishes a creative and imaginative world thrumming with life— it almost inspires me to whip out an essential oil or two just to try my hand at some of the spells depicted. Her detailed world-building goes beyond the sphere of the magical and to the mundane as well, as she captures the feel and character of a tight-knit, small town like Willow Creek so well, it and its residents could be real.
The biggest draw of ‘Tangled Roots’, however, are the characters that Young has crafted and the relationships that exist between them. The heroine, Cassie, for instance, is a strong, stubborn and powerful witch with such a compelling background and personality, you’d be hard-pressed not to want the absolute best for her. A female protagonist being rendered into a waif damsel-in-distress is an issue that I’ve encountered in many books similar to this one, but Cassie couldn’t be further from this. Yes, she is distressed, and yes, she is vulnerable, but she herself has the strength to overcome the obstacles in her path and to take charge and take matters into her own hands. There are also many other fleshed-out female characters, such as Ginny, Nick’s grandmother and Cassie’s mentor, and the elusive and cryptic Guardian of Willow Creek, who seemingly has big plans in store for Cassie and Nick. The relationships between these women are complex and profound— ridden with things both said and left unsaid and heavy with a sense of foreboding and intrigue.
The most captivating relationship, however, is between Cassie and Nick themselves. What struck me the most was how healthy their romance was when this genre is often plagued with relationships bordering on dangerous. Nick is a gentleman through-and-through— always ensuring that Cassie is comfortable with their level of intimacy before proceeding and putting her feelings and needs above any misgivings he may have. The two connect and support each other like a real loving couple would— lifting each other up when the other falls. It was truly sweet and heartwarming to read about how much they cared for each other.
In conclusion, if you have a hankering for a story filled to the brim with magical destinies, supernatural enigmas and fascinating characters, I cannot recommend ‘Tangled Roots’ enough. It will satiate this need and then some.
This book was awesome! It was a great read, and easy to read in an hour or so. The characters were well written, and I hope they’re continuing in the following books.
I enjoyed Tangled Roots by Denise D Young. It was an interesting story and I really liked the characters she created. The story centers around Cassie and Nick. It is the journey they go through to finding each other and love. There is magic and an evil that must be fought. This novel was the first in a series and I am looking forward to reading more.
Forced to take extreme measures to ensure her own freedom, witch Cassie Gearhart’s spell changes the course of her future. One minute she’s in 1974, the next she wakes and it’s 2019 and everything she once knew has changed. Inexplicably drawn to the only witch left in Willow Creek, and incidentally, the grandson of her mentor, Cassie and Nick have to navigate the chemistry between them while also dealing with an urgent matter. It’s hard enough to deal with forty-five years of change, but on top of that add the mystery of the magic Cassie and Nick are feeling and that of the mystery of the magic that stole the coven of Willow Creek and you have Tangled Roots. This is a quick read that brings you into the world of magic and a promising new series of a small-town coven.
This is my first book by this author and it did not disappoint. The writing is really easy to read and the story has a really good flow. The mix of time travel, witches and romance was very well executed. The characters were relatable and the world building good. The ending felt a bit rushed but came to a natural conclusion. No cliffhanger but the world has been developed to continue with side characters into book 2.
Tangled Roots (Witches of Willow Creek: Tangled Magic Book 1) by Denise D. Young will delight the senses of paranormal lovers. The intrigue was so great that I had to go back and start at the beginning as I inadvertently started with Tangled Fates which is the second book in this series. So, from the beginning and the first book Tangled Roots is a great paranormal tale that is a fantastic start to this series. This story tells of one Witch who finds herself lost in another time knowing there is danger on its way. What is the old saying “be careful of what you weave?” Well apparently, this Witch wove her magic, and it went wrong. With witches and magic, drama, and romance. This short story kept me glued to the pages. I cannot wait to see what Denise gives us next.
Cassie and Nick find love in an unexpected place… each other. Cassie is from 40 years in the past from the same coven as Nick. When she arrives they think all is lost. Each chapter brings a new challenge. Great series, a real page-turner.
Cassie is a witch and loves using her air magic. Her brother hates her and her parents want to lock her away. After graduation Cassie runs away to New York but ends up in Willow Creek. Cassie is welcomed by a coven and feels the love of family for the first time. She is still being hunted by her brother who wants to drag her home. She will do anything for that not to happen and she does. Watch what you wish for. This was a great story and a quick easy read. I want to read more of the continuing story of Cassie and Nick who are destined to be together.
