Rule one: Don’t look at the demon. When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon. My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest … and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.
Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.
All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.
But I did, and now it’s too late.

Slaying Monsters for the Feeble (#2)

While I’m on a reviewing kick, I just thought of another series I read and loved. The Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie. This, along with its sister series, the first Guild Codex series, are truly awesome books in the Urban Fantasy genre. I’ll go as far as saying she’s my favourite Urban Fantasy author. She even unseated Ilona Andrrews. I didn’t think that was possible.
So if you love UF and haven’t read any of Annette Marie’s books yet, you’re missing out on some really great series. (There are four series in this world at this point. I haven’t read The One and Only Crystal Druid yet, but it’s on my to be read pile.)
Taming Demons for Beginners
Guild Codex: Demonized Series, Book 1
By: Annette Marie
Narrated by: Cris Dukehart
This is an awesome start to a new series! Robin’s parents die and she has to live with her uncle, but he doesn’t seem so honest. She finds out he has a demon trapped in the library. He tells her never to go in the library again! Well, you know she did! That’s when things go crazy! Exciting, suspenseful, thrilling, and funny! Can’t wait for the next book!
Narration was terrific!
I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down once I started. Robin was a great main character who sucked you into her troubles and had you rooting for her from the beginning. It’s hard not to love a character who adores books enough to brave a demon. Zylas was awesome. Reading their interactions kept me up long past when I should have gone to bed.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys engaging characters and a fun new world. I can’t wait for the next book.
A demon who loves sweets? Adorable. I may enjoy this one more than the Spellbound series! Is that possible??
Definitely enjoyed what I’m sure will be a slow burn romantic adventure of epic proportions. The most unlikely demon contractor winds up bound to a scarily powerful demon from another dimension. He’s sworn to protect her, but she can’t control him. If the magical community finds out, they’ll both be destroyed. They have to work together to find the shady magical practitioner who killed Robin’s parents to steal the secrets of summoning and stop him from unleashing dangerous demons upon the human population. Loved it!
Great slow, slow burn between two unusual lead characters. I read the entire series over the course of a couple of days!
A fun, quick read to unwind and escape into a cool urban fantasy.
Fell in love with Robin and Zylas. Read this series at least three no four times and I love it every time purchased all the the books in this world and I love them all
Absolutely great spin-off/addition
I love the guild codes series, it is such a fun and engaging series and now seeing another take with a new addition to the guild in different direction is amazing. I cannot wait until Robin’s family secrets are revealed to her.
Amazing delighted fun
If not for the pain, I might’ve doubted my memory. A demon had thrown a cookie at my face?
“Na? But payilas.” He stepped closer and I retreated. My back hit the dresser. “Protect … does not mean obey.”
His face appeared in front of mine, a curious frown tweaking his lips. “What is wrong with your head? Your skin is changing color.”
Omg, I love this whole series.
‘Taming Demons for Beginners’ is book one in Annette Marie’s Guild Codex: Demonized series.
This series follows Robin a human that has been told to stay away from Magic. But unfortunate events has her ending up smack bang in the middle, alongside her Demon Zylas.
After loosing her parents, Robin moves into her uncles place while her inheritance is sorted out. But there is only one thing she is really after and it’s not the money. Sticking around until she can get her inheritance isn’t easy especially when her uncle isn’t being straightforward and honest. But what Robin finds in her uncles house is the last thing she would have guessed. Being curious Robin begins hanging in the library on a regular bases trying to get the demon in the black orb to talk to her.
This is the first book I have read from Annette Marie, I was very pleased and enjoyed her writing style. The concept and storyline was fresh, addictive, action packed, fast paced and enjoyable.
There was a lot of growth with our heroine, at the beginning I found Robin to be too timid and had no voice. But around the 30%-40% of the book she found her voice and backbone. I believe Zylas has a major impact for this. Although I didn’t like Robin’s character at the beginning, she did grow on me and I think as the series continues, Robin will continue to grow and come into herself more. Now Zylas, wow, what can I say about him? Where and how do I summon me a demon to contract? Zylas’ character is just such an exceptional persona, he has no regard for human life, boundaries, and his complete and utter disregard for being “nice” was hilarious. But what do you expect from a demon, lol.
On the verge of steamy, these books are a must-read for a slow-build romance with demons. Loved it!
This was the first book I read by this author and the moment I finished it, I bought all of her current books and preordered the rest. I’m absolutely obsessed with her incredible world building, characters, and writing style. She has become one of my very favorite authors and I can’t wait to read more from her.
I think I found my new book obsession. So, so good! ps: the heroine is a book nerd. Need I say more?
This book had me from page one till the very end. I mean I sat down to read for a bit and when I looked up next the book was done and it was 1 am…
Let’s start with the characters. Loved them. Loved to hate some of them. I liked how real they felt, especially Robin who had traits both relatable and unfortunate. I completely understood being completely timid until curiosity gets the better of you. Been there. Her cousin’s reaction to her arrival at their home and why and how the relationship develops. The awkward family encounters yup been there too. Zylas is still a mystery. And there is nothing like the unknown to cause one of two reactions. Run for the hills or dive in deeper. And with Zylas by her side, Robin manages to do both.
Now for the plot. Great. It had some expected, some unexpected, and some new twists to old legends/myths. I definitely cannot wait to read more about the world this author built. I have so many questions and the answers we do get just draw you in deeper. Then ending had me rushing to return book 1 and grab book 2 and that will be an adventure I will hurry to continue.
The flow was good, no choppy scene skipping. There were not a ton of grammatical errors. All in all one of the best things I have read this year.
Not-so-lowkey obsessed right now. I can’t even give a full review. Just read it, mmkay? You’ll thank me
I put off reading this for so long. SMH! My mistake! Holy crap you actually fall head over heels in love with the characters
Awesome
When we first saw Robin in the other codex series, she was introduced from the perspective of the other characters, but the tiny demon contractor was fascinating! This novel, from her perspective widened that lens and shows us the other side- and what she thinks of the original quartet! It’s great and I can’t wait to see what this group gets into next!
Pros:
– Well written
– blends well with the first series while standing alone
– Zylas….. can i have a crush on a demon? I have a crush on a demon.
Cons:
– I thought Robin would be stronger, actually, from seeing her previously. But she’s not. It’s jarring, but it truly works much better this way.
It felt like I was missing an important prologue introductory, or as though this were truly a book 2 not 1. My excitement over a new, highly rated story was quickly diminished from the swirl of confusion the writing provided. I hardly knew what anything meant, all in all, very frustrating.
Also, Robin is a big wuss. While I’m not looking for a character like Aelin Galathynius, a little growth in bravery would be nice. She is frustratingly cowardly.
