I… don’t know what to say about this book except it was so astonishing that I keep telling everyone about it, so… that’s… a thing? A good thing, I mean, I think I enjoyed this, or at least I read until the end and I kept going ‘oh my goodness!’ and it was a gleeful sort of ‘oh my goodness’ when it wasn’t incredulous… so…?
This book is a summer blockbuster movie disguised as a novel. It’s even got Wesley Snipes in it (he wrote the book and he is obviously in the book as the kick-tail mentor figure with the giant sword)! From the very first page, it’s nonstop action, a cross between urban fantasy and horror, complete with mobs of people being transformed into monsters by a substance laced into illegal drugs and the crisis is so bad that hell LITERALLY BREAKS LOOSE and demons show up–
–and this is where it gets kind of crazy, because this book is full of religion. Good, old-timey Protestant religion. What Hollywood producer would ever treat the religious stuff as earnestly as this book appears to? The main character is a preacher’s daughter who can trade biblical quotes with the villain, who’s literally being inhabited by a demon from hell. And religion literally SAVES THE DAY. ALONG WITH WESLEY SNIPES AND THE GIANT SWORD.
Also, ANGELS.
I mean, it’s so gloriously over the top that I keep throwing question marks every time I read it and yet I keep going ‘wait, I think this is awesome?’
So… I guess… this is a movie! In the form of a book! With awesome action-packed scenes, terrible villains, impressive good guys who use swords to dodge bullets and heal through the power of faith and good works and… I just… yes? I kind of loved it. I loved its sincerity, and its glossy charm, and its photogenic characters, and the angels and the God-granted swords and the literally evil villains and the over-the-top ending and its super Christianity, complete with quotes from the Bible at the start of every chapter. Don’t expect it to be deep–it moves too fast–but it’s certainly entertaining.
If any of that sounds appealing to you then… this is all sorts of up your alley. Lol. Try it. 😀
Slow development of interesting idea, an okay read.
Pleasantly surprised that I Loved it! Kept me thoroughly engaged. It was extremely difficult to put it down when life interrupted! probably would have completed in a single sitting given the opportunity. Don’t miss this book!
It left plenty of room for a sequel or series… hint… hint
Looking forward to reading more from Mr. Snipes.
Unusual story, very entertaining
Well written, just not my style. Theological discussions of faith, which is a very serious topic, and I prefer escapism.
The world depicted in this one is the darkest of the dark…stays with you long after reading it.
The book was a good read with an interesting plot. Interesting tale in how good triumphs over evil. It was a good story of being lost and able to be redeemed, regain one’s faith and belief in miracles. It kept my attention to the end.
Not a great book, but fun reading.
Excellent characters that were easy to sympathize with. Faced with catastrophic choices, these characters were realistic and relatable. Great job with building a world that the story fit into – wonderful read!
Oh, This Is Outstanding!
You will not want this thrill ride to end. This adventure is full of excitement, tension, horror and expectancy when the forces of evil clash epically against the forces of light. In addition to that there is an ancient grudge match between two super soldiers, a keen protégé female protagonist that outstandingly stands up to the challenge before her in sterling fashion, plus a support cast of solidly written characters that captivates and enriches the plot deeply.
A plot twisting and turning, easy to read, action packed and hard to put down page turner!
