NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again. With a new bonus chapter In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits … chapter
In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).
In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.
Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).
Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

All fluff. No substance.
Overall I liked the book. It was great to get some insides/behind the scenes from Gilmore Girls. In my mind, I thought Lauren Graham will describe more funny moments, that is the reason I only gave 3 stars. Although, I still recommend the book!! I think it is great for Gilmore Girls fans. I borrowed the audiobook from my local library, but when you buy it, you will get a little booklet with pictures that are mentioned in the book – great idea!
I listened to this book via Audible. This book is really just stories about Lauren’s life and acting career. I love Lauren Graham already, but listening to her narrate her own book was delightful! Listening to her book made me feel like we were just old friends catching up on the couch with a glass of wine. Excellently narrated and highly entertaining! She’s very underrated, such a gem.
I did not finish this book. I expected more humor, but I found it boring and rambling.
Lauren Graham is my hero! I love her characters & I her as herself. I can actually follow her lines of reasoning. I know, scary, but great!
If I didn’t already love Lauren Graham and Gilmore Girls I love both so much more!!
Must read for Gilmore Girls fans!
If you are a Lauren Graham fan you will like this book! You can almost hear her voice in the head as you read it!
You need to be a Gilmore girls superfan to thoroughly enjoy this.
Lauren Graham reads the audio book and it makes the whole experience wonderful.
As funny in her book as she was in Gilmore Girls. For those missing Lorelei, it’s a great read!
What a fun read.
I love Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, so obviously I’m a Lauren Graham fan. When this book popped up on sale, I grabbed it. The first thing I noticed it that Lauren Graham writes like Lorelai talks – fast with lots of detours along the way. As I read, I realized the reason I like this actor so much is because she thinks and acts a lot like I do when she isn’t playing a character. I absolutely loved the chapter about Old Lady Johnson!
This book is interesting, giving behind the scenes looks at the world of Hollywood and what it takes to make it. I love the laugh out loud moments as well as the thoughtful reflection on many parts of her journey. I love her perspective on appreciating the opportunities she has had. Gratefulness is always in style.
So, if you are a Gilmore Girls fan and enjoy a good memoir, this is a book I would definitely recommend!
She is a good writer and actor.
If you enjoyed watching Gilmore Girls you’ll love this behind the scenes look and you’ll find out just how hard it can be to become a successful actor. Very entertaining. Fast paced and witty. Felt like I was reading a Gilmore script. Fun!
I felt that the book would have benefited from some editing, not particularly interesting. Yes, I’m a Gilmore Girls fan but sorry, nothing much here-as lackluster as the reboot.
I liked the conversational style of writing.
Felt like sitting in Luke’s Diner with Loralai, drinking coffee – made me miss Gilmore Girls AND Parenthood! Great read, loved every word!
A fun read
Perfect for the beach
I honestly could not finish this book. It was disorganized fluff with no discernible depth or insight, and forced humor. Awful–and I LOVED Gilmore Girls. It seems pretty clear from reading this that Lauren Graham WAS Lorelie Gilmore–and is perhaps not much more.
