This box set was an enjoyable read. The author has a nice writing style. The characters in all three of the stories were authentic and you could easily relate to them. I really enjoyed how the author gave us an insight to the Chinese way of life that has always fascinated me. I plan to read more books by Liwen Ho.
I loved each of these stories. Well written, great characters… Highly recommend.
Taking a Chance on the Heartbreaker – Ashlynn is the “good” Christian young lady and Jeremy while redeemed has a tarnished past. They reconnect and there is immediate chemistry. I totally understood why she acted and felt the way she did after finding out about his past. I loved how the author changed her heart. I felt for Jeremy because while forgiven he and others had to live with his past and the consequences. 4 stars
Taking a Chance on Mr. Wrong – Melanie is Chinese and Ben is not. There starts the problems, well at least for her mom. They were so adorable and he was sooooo understanding. There is a part near the end that I just wanted to shout at Melanie “please stop and wake up”!!! She came through!!! 4 stars
Taking a Chance on the Enemy – Sam and Lucas were “enemies” in high school but really had a crush on each other. They reconnect many years later and their meeting is a little funny. Sam has been through a great deal in her life and their were times I thought Lucas was way to self-righteous. The angst made me so sad and my heart broke for Sam – loved her. But in the end Lucas made a grand gesture – about time – and explained some of his self-righteous behavior. My favorite in this series!! I have read this one more than a few times. 5 stars
I *loved* this boxset! The “Taking Chances on Love” series is pretty fun, but it also deals with some serious issues, so I really loved that the author blended those two into her stories. Technically, the second one (Taking a Chance on Mr. Wrong) happens first chronologically, but honestly, they can be read in any order, or in the one they come in the boxset 🙂 I also loved the different tropes the author used, since it will appeal to different readers 😉 Oh, and I just wanted to say that I definitely loved the sweetness of this cover and the romantic feelings one gets from just looking at it 😀
Here are my individual reviews:
1. (Original/First review): So, what happens when Prince Charming comes in a not so shiny armor, and maybe with some chinks in it to boot?
Taking a Chance on the Heartbreaker is the answer to that question from a Christian perspective. I really loved the story between Ashlynn and Jeremy, but it also made me think a lot on my own perspective regarding this matter. I really enjoyed the pace of the story and how their backgrounds were slowly revealed, but what I loved the most was the reminder and Truth of God’s grace and love.
This book is definitely a favorite now, and I know I’ll probably end up rereading it in the future. 5 stars and completely recommended!
(Second/Updated review): When I said I would end up rereading this book in the future, I never thought it would be so soon, but I still enjoyed it. This book is still a favorite 😉 Loved this edited, better version of Straight to You (the book’s original title), and really liked the added bits to Jeremy and Ashlynn’s story. ~ 5 stars and recommended!
2. Taking a Chance on Mr. Wrong: I loved this story, even though it takes you back many years before the events in the first book happened. No worries, they can be read in any order.
I really enjoyed getting to know Melanie and her family, as well as all the traditions that come with a Chinese family. Of course, it was more interesting to see the cultural “clash” once she meets Ben and starts dating him 😉 Loved the characters growing (especially Melanie’s), as well as the Christian references; enjoyed the writing (as always), and can’t wait to read Sam’s story. ~ 5 stars
3. Taking a Chance on the Enemy was so good!! I think it was the perfect end to this trilogy, and I just loved reading the interaction between Sam and Lucas. It had been a while since I’d read the previous two, but I could easily remember most of the names thrown in there. Little Lucy was a fantastic addition to this book, and I’m so glad she gets her own story in Tropical Kiss and Tell *happy sigh* Completely recommended! ~ 5 stars
The characters in these stories are interrelated. In terms of timeline, Book 2 comes first with Ben and Melanie’s story. Book 1 is next with Ben’s younger sister Ashlynn and Jeremy’s story. Book 3 is Melanie’s younger sister Sam and Lucas’s story. The path to true love for each couple is never smooth and filled with laugh out loud and sweet moments.
