Take a Chance on Me by Becky Wade is a really fun and engaging read. I love Wade’s unique and endearing characters, especially Penelope. Penelope is hilarious, loyal, and determined. She’s also very observant. She has watched as all her close girlfriends have fallen in love with the wrong kind of men and then paid the price. In an attempt to refrain from the heartache her friends have encountered, Penelope has set rules for herself that she absolutely refuses to budge on even when very obvious sparks fly between her and Eli. I mean, Eli is practically wearing a sign that says, “Penelope, I’m the exact man God has in store for you,” but Penelope is sticking to her guns and not backing down. Penelope’s iron-clad rules serve her very well for quite a while, but it becomes clear that her rules have become more important than the plans God has for her. I love Wade’s reminder that setting boundaries and having a strict moral code to live by is a very good thing, but we have to remember that God is the Boss of our lives, and ultimately HE establishes our steps (Proverbs 16:9). If God puts something or someone in our lives that appear to go against our man-made restrictions, it very well could be God telling us we’ve made our rules more important than Him. I love it when a novella is not only a good read but also one that makes the reader think. Take a Chance on Me is all this and then some! I highly recommend this story, and cannot wait for Stay With Me to release in May.
I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on February 28, 2020, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Good gracious! Get ready to swoon over Eli! I devoured this novella and wished it didn’t have to end. I’m hoping to get a glimpse of my new favorite fighter pilot and Penelope as the Misty River Romance series continues. I don’t know of any other authors who write novellas like this for free as a gift to readers. Becky Wade is something else!
I thought this novella was cute! Despite it’s brevity, it worked for me. The fact that Penelope and Eli have a history, and it’s laid out well for the reader, takes away that moving too fast feeling that a lot of novellas give me.
Penelope’s free-spirited nature won me over, and I like how she and Eli are foils for one another, but still have a deep connection point. Also, how cute is the idea of a camper for Penelope to sell her pies out of? I just loved that. I also appreciated Eli’s character. I’m not sure when straight-forward male leads fell out of favor, but Wade brought one back with Eli. He wants to win Penelope back, and this time, he’s not afraid to be honest and do what needs to be done to achieve that goal. He’s unflappable but not pushy or into games, and that’s just really attractive to me. Move over, brooding, hard-to-decipher heroes – give me the gentlemanly ones that make their intentions known. Unless he’s walking on the moors with his shirttails flapping all Darcy-esque. But that’s another story.
This novella has me pumped for book one in this series. I look forward to seeing these characters again and getting to know more about Misty River.
Take a Chance on Me, the Misty River Romance prequel novella by Becky Wade, is an endearing, little love story that thoughtfully introduces the reader to the small town of Misty River and some of the people and families who live there. Authentic and heart-felt, it is truly an engaging story right from the start. The quick pacing, interesting plot, and likable characters easily grabbed and held my attention page after page.
With scenes that feature homemade pie, witty banter, and slow dancing under the stars this novella is refreshingly sweet and appealing. Yet, this book also contains relevant, meaningful themes of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. There are certainly scenes that made me smile, but there were also moments of deep feelings and real emotions that truly touched my heart and brought a tear to my eyes.
Ms. Wade is a gifted writer, and her genuine talent for storytelling is certainly evident in Take a Chance on Me. This delightful work of fiction has everything many readers desire: tears, second-chances, romance, and faith. Even though the page count may be slim, this story is remarkably full and unforgettable. It is a very special start to what promises to be an amazing series. I eagerly recommend it.
Sweet as southern ice tea and as yummy as fresh peach pie, you will definitely want to Take a Chance on this swoony novella! Set in the small town of Misty river in the hazy hills of Northern Georgia. I felt like I was right there in the story with the characters.
I fell in love with these characters and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this novella today! There’s even a bonus sneak peek at the end of the story for the next book, Stay With Me!

“She only wished that relationships were as simple as pie.”
Take a Chance on Me, the prequel to Becky Wade’s Misty River romance series, is the perfect novella for fans of contemporary romance. Award-winning author Becky Wade’s ability to create wonderful characters that her readers will fall in love with and her trademark humor shines through in this beautifully written novella. Becky Wade has been a long-time favorite author of mine, and I am guaranteed to love everything she writes.
Air Force fighter pilot Eli Price is back in town and determined to win back Penelope Quinn, owner of Polka-Dot Apron Pies. Penelope does not date airmen, but should she break her own rule (again) and give the handsome and charming Eli a second chance?
There were so many memorable moments in this novella, including a karaoke performance toward the end that completely stole my heart. Readers are also introduced to Eli’s friend Sam, who will play a starring role in Stay with Me, book one in the Misty River romance series, which releases in May 2020.
Take a Chance on Me is highly recommended for readers of contemporary romance, especially readers who enjoy books by Denise Hunter and Courtney Walsh. The sneak peek for Stay with Me at the end of the novella has me eagerly anticipating the release of Sam and Genevieve’s story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to leave a review. All opinions expressed are mine.
“What could be a greater honor than loving and supporting someone who’s given their oath to protect their country and their countrymen, even at the cost of their own life?”
As always, Becky Wade writes a fantastic story. This prequel in the Misty River Romance Series is well worth your time, and a nice warm-up for the series. (A new novel in the series releases in early May 2021, too.) The digital version is free currently on Kindle, so nab it before it disappears. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll purchase a copy of the softcover version.
I think this is the closest to real life dark issues that I have read by Becky Wade and she handles addiction issues beautifully. Highly recommend!
I thoroughly enjoyed the back and forth between the two main characters. Cute story.
This was a fun, quick read. My only complaint is that I wish there was more. 🙂 Hoping there might be more mention of these two characters and the status of their relationship in some of the rest of the books that are coming in this series.
I can’t believe this is the first Becky Wade book that I have read! Such great contemporary romance books that I’ve missed out on. You can be sure that I’ll be going to her backlist to gobble up all the books and be on the look out for her future releases. With smoothly flowing plot, deeply layered characters who are easy to empathize with, wonderful banter and clever writing, this novella will captivate you. The small tourist town of Misty River is absolutely enchanting and I can’t wait to go back there in Stay With Me.
Penelope is a creative, passionate, loyal baker set on not dating any men from the Air Force and Eli is a rule-following, loyal, tender, persistent, and goal-oriented fighter pilot determined to pursue Penelope. Penelope’s family (older brother Theo, his wife and baby) plays a big role in this story with medical and babysitting emergencies.
Anyone who enjoys contemporary romance will love this start to Misty River series. Becky Wade has found herself another gushing fan in this reader.
4.5 stars
Take a Chance on Me (Misty River Romance) by Becky Wade is the prequel to her latest series, Misty River Romance. Becky Wade is one of my favorite authors. Her books are always on my top reads or top of my to read pile whenever it hits the stores. What I love about her is her ability to put a bit of magic in what one would be just an ordinary romantic story of boy meets girl, a bit of drama and then happy ending. We may expect all of that but the journey she writes, through all those steps not only captivates me, but also shows me life. Real life and the many ups and downs that comes with it. It’s the perspective that we take, through well written characters that touches, ignites or inspires us to be, to do, and to relish in God’s purpose. Take a Chance On Me is not a fluff piece at all, and is very much a story we can enjoy and learn a bit or two about ourselves. After reading it, you’ll want to jump right into book 1, Stay with Me .
I was already looking forward to Becky’s Misty River series, so when she announced this gem I couldn’t help but snag myself a copy to read. Plus, who could deny themselves a sweet small town romance on second chances?
Although this is a novella, Becky did a fabulous job creating a unique story about second chances that stands out despite the small amount of pages to it. She also made it to where you couldn’t help but fall in love with Penelope and Eli’s story.
From the very first page I adored Penelope Quinn and her free-spirited nature. She is a strong character who knew what she deserved and wasn’t afraid to ask for it. I liked how Penelope was able to work through her emotions and what it would mean to break her own rule again and give Eli a second chance. I also found the determination that Eli Price had on trying to win over Penelope’s heart endearing. He went from being this straight-forward Air Force fighter pilot who had his eyes only on his career, to wanting to develop a relationship with a woman he cared deeply for no matter what she asked of him.
Their dynamic was very sweet and heartfelt with just the right amount of romantic tension and I felt like Becky really captured the essence of what it’s like for someone to consider giving a second chance, while also showing what it’s like for the person asking for that second chance.
Overall, Take a Chance on Me was a sweet and fun novella that I wished was a full length novel. I would have loved to read more of Penelope and Eli’s story.
*I received a free ebook copy of this book. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.*
This prequel offered everything I love in a good story: a dashing hero determined to win his lady, a heroine who needs some convincing, an interesting community of characters who feel like friends and family, some tense moments, some hilarious moments, good food and great kisses. Yes, this one has it all!
I love stories that force two people together for a common cause, especially when that common cause happens to be a baby or small child or even multiple children. I also appreciate stories that challenge my perspective and let me tell you, Penelope’s plan of self-preservation and her commitment to the small-town lifestyle made a lot of sense to me. Our “never” often becomes an opportunity to let go and take a step of faith while trusting God’s will for our lives, doesn’t it?! Take a Chance on Me is entertaining and a touching reminder of the great sacrifices made by servicemen and women and their families on our nation’s behalf.
I purchased an ebook copy of this title. The opinions expressed are my own.
This novella is so good! It has a sweet second chance romance, humor, a lovable kids’ basketball team, and lots of pies that I would love to taste 🙂 It’s a delightful preview to Wade’s new series.
Rules are made to be broken–right? Penelope refuses to date any of the airmen who come through the base near town…until Eli. There’s something about him that makes her want to toss her rule aside.
I loved the way Wade develops this charming town into a place that makes the reader feels welcome and like an honorary citizen of, and this first installment allows the reader to get a grasp on the vibe. I’m excited to get a front row seat to this new series and look forward to meeting many more intriguing characters and their stories.
Content: mild romance; mild+ religion
Penelope has a life rule, and is determined she’ll never break it. But, then, Eli comes back into her life…what’s a girl to do?? This story was captivating from the start. The main characters were by turns feisty, delightful, funny and determined. I appreciated the nod to our military pilot heroes. I was enchanted and drawn in from the start. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Move over Maverick, there’s a new Flyboy in town and he’s not leaving. Penelope and Eli strike an forgettable flame in this prequel to Becky Wade’s newest series, A Misty River Romance. I love Eli’s insistence and determination to win over Penelope, despite her staunch guard and refusal to cave to his good looks, tender heart and all out captivating charm. A sweet, warm romance that is a greatly crafted novella. Perfect for one sitting. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this precursor to the Misty River Romance series. I loved the charming banter between Penelope and Eli and the snapshot the novella provided of the military, yet small-town Misty River. I look forward to learning more about Sam’s character in Stay With Me (Book #1 in the Misty River series)
