Dragon riding, fae illusions, dark magic and a forbidden romance. Bells, a poor fae who works on a farm outside the protections of the dragon city, never planned to go on a quest. But when trolls attack her family, she goes to the city for help. Instead, she finds herself teaming up with the one dragon she knows: Jaekob. Years ago, dragons rose up to bring peace to the city and the surrounding … the city and the surrounding area- and now Jaekob, a dragon heir, believes there’s no reason for further involvement.
But when the dark elves infect his city with a virus unlike anything he’s ever seen, he knows they need a solution. Now.
The sword of peace.
The one thing that can help them both- or so the legends say. If a highborn dragon and a fae of the lowest class can overcome their prejudices and combine their magic, they might be able to gain the sword.
Of course, it might be nothing more than a myth.
They’re about to find out.

Sword of Fire is the first book in the Ashes series by J. A. Culican and is an excellently written tale in a fabulous world of dragons, fae, trolls, and elves. It is filled with action and adventure, twists and turns, and is so beautifully put together you are drawn into the story and must keep turning pages to the end needing to know what is going to happen. l I highly recommend it and know you will not be disappointed.
This author is an amazing fantasy author. There’s always plenty of action and mayhem and tons of great characters. Bring on the magic and fae, and dragons, and shifters, and trolls and more. I love how she blends in a variety of characters always a little out of the ordinary with an awesome story to boot. You can’t get too comfy because you might miss something. In this case we get to meet a farm fae who gets in her mind that the dragon can help her. There’s a whole lot more going on but this is the beginning of her journey to save the world with a dragon who refuses to help anyone but her.
There’s more to this whole thing than we were let in on in book one although there are plenty of hints that there is more going on than we know so far. This as always was an amazing read and I can’t wait to see where we are off to next in this awesome adventure.
Promising beginning, but very serialized. It ends on a cliffhanger and it’s necessary to buy the next books to find out what happens.
Shallow characters and plot with random modern pop culture references because fairies watch human movies. Not worth the dollar it cost.
This book was amazing!! Read it as part of the Through the Ashes box set and I loved it. A great action-packed fantasy and I can’t wait to tear through the next 3 in the series. Cover is gorgeous and the world building is great.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a fae story that involves magic, fantasy and dragons. Prepare to meet Jaekob the dragon, and continue the story to find out what happens next!
This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story. This is a wonderful start to a new series. This story is a very action fun packed story and I loved reading it very much and look forward to reading the next book.
The earth was demolished long ago, ravaged in a war that tore apart the very foundations of the world. Only the force of an ancient pure race saved humanity from the brink of destruction, but the saviors, the dragons, held other ideas. They left the world as soon as the fighting had ceased, condemning the humans to their next fate, death by pures.
As slavery, hunger and greed runs rammpade, Bells knows nothing more than the suffering of faekind. Worked to death as farmers for the cruel elves or left as fodder for trolls and weres alike, there is no justice nor hope enough to save her kind. Yet downtrodden as she may be, when an impossible order sentences her family to death, Bells sets out for the one last hope she has. A dragon. Not just any dragon, but the heir to the First Council, Jaekob. An heir that promised 10 years ago to remember her face. But times have changed more than just the world, and Jaekob is no longer as willing to help as he once was.
Yet when an unstoppable illness threatens all of their lives, Jaekob’s hands are tied to the very world he is relunctant to save. Together, Fae and Dragon will risk everything they have to stop the virus before it is to late. But one mistake in ignorance could mean the end for them all.
THIS AIN’T NO JACK AND THE BEAN STALK!!!
Wow! Culican does it again in splended Technicolor. What this author can do with words a little imagination and the talent to weave a world around us so fascinating and real, until everything else ceases to exist except this world shes created spectacularly. The characters and scenes were realistic, intriguing, complex with an undercurrent you could feel run through you. Following the characters along witnessing their personalities grow stronger in this page turning bombshell that will leave you reeling. You have all the action packed, fast paced, nailbiting, gut wretching tension with a foreboding that gives the illusion you were right there in ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with nerve racking, heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping that keeps this strong storyline flowing along nicely that keeps your attention focused on this tale as it unfolds. Great job Culican bringing this read together beautifully. Thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.
Starts slow and winds up a winner! The disparity between the have and the have nots, need to be broken down. A Prince, Jaekob and a fae, Bells got together to help other fae that was being treated mean and worked to death. To get a sword to kill some growth that was killing people but they got a lot more then he bargained for. Good book. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This was a fun action-packed fantasy that was impossible to put down! I enjoyed every minute of it!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Bells is a fae, a farming fae to be exact. Hardly better than a slave, Bells spends from sunup to past sundown working the land, helping her family as she can, and hiding from danger. Her shadow walking skills are all that stand between her and death… or worse. But one day, even that skill can’t protect her from the dragons that swoop down from the sky, terrifying Bells.
But the dragons are not what Bells expected; erudite, polite, and almost aloof, the dragons converse for a short while with Bells, then take wing again. Bells makes a promise to herself; some day she would see the dragon again, and tell him he needs to find a way to make life better for all Pures, not just the dragons.
Ten years pass, and Bells finds herself trapped by a troll; a troll that threatens to eat Bells and her family if they don’t produce the promised mace. Bells frantically rushes to her father, to discover the truth: that her father hasn’t enough metal to create the mace, which means certain death to Bells and her family. So Bells takes it upon herself to travel to the nearest large city and procure more metal for the troll’s mace.
Once Bells arrives at the city of Philadelphia, she approaches a distant cousin, Hawking . He provides Bells with the address of the dragon that she spoke with so many years ago, but advises her she only has a very small window of opportunity to speak with the dragon, Jaekob. As Bells approaches the address, she sees a man approaching a vehicle in the street. Bells thinks it’s Jaekob, but it’s not; it’s his father Micah. As Bells and Micah are conversing, the world implodes around them….
Can Bells reach Jaekob and shake him out of his self absorbed shell? Will Bells be able to save the world as foretold in the prophecy? Will Jaekob be the support she needs, or will he abandon her to her fate?
Fast paced and continuous plot twists keep you guessing! Can’t wait to see what happens next!
A fun action-packed adventure that’s not to miss! It reminded me of Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed the characters and this new fantasy world that the author created. This is the first book I’ve read by the author but it definitely won’t be the last!
