All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful … last!” — Merry, Amazon reader
All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful getaway in the Wyoming mountains for his rare days off. He’s grown weary of the bicentennial celebrations, the angry families of patients, the rash of campers coming down from the mountains high on speed, and the midnight call-outs to cover for the town veterinarian. When his wife Susanne balks at the trip just as they’re walking out the door—leaving him to go it alone with his lovestruck teenage daughter Trish and eager-but-adolescent son Perry—Patrick is wounded but determined, despite the news of a murderer escaping custody on the other side of the mountains.
After two days of rain-soaked horseback riding to hunt and fish, Patrick’s gotten nothing but weird encounters, wet socks, and a whiny daughter. So, on the third day, when Trish begs to stay behind at their campsite to read, Patrick is secretly relieved.
Meanwhile back in town, Susanne’s had a rough time of it herself. A break-in, a wreck, and a premonition that something is terribly wrong with her family. Unable to ignore her growing fears, she enlists the help of a Wyoming-tough neighbor, and the two women make for the mountains.
When Patrick and Perry return to camp, Trish has vanished, along with the horses, the truck, and the trailer. Clues point in opposite directions. Did she run off with the boy whose note Patrick found at the camp? Or was she taken—as the hoof marks over their destroyed tent suggest? Whichever it was, the tracks lead into the mountains, not out of them. With help too far away to make it before Trish’s trail is washed away, Patrick and Perry embark on a desperate trek into the wilderness to find her, with Susanne not far behind them.

Very well-written, full of suspense and action, and with great characters, this is a great read; one that makes me want to keep reading the series =D
I enjoyed the family’s dynamic that is present here; how the trials that the protagonists had to face changed their perceptions about each other. A wonderful book, one you’ll have problems trying to put down before the end 😛
I received an ARC of this story and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.
Patrick Flint is married to Susanne with 2 children, he’s a doctor and he just moved the family to Wyoming from Texas 2 years previous. This is set in 1976 so imagine your father, or grandfather, these men are the head of the family and try to maintain some type of control. Patrick is no different but he is a good doctor, he is a good father and husband and wants to spend time with his family. Susanne, however, doesn’t fit in in Wyoming and refuses to go on the hunting trip planned out by Patrick. That is just the beginning of their adventures.
Pamela Fagan Hutchins has a way of creating a smooth journey through her writing. It’s a steady pace through the book, although I had a harder time getting through the last few chapters (it just seems to be on an even plateau throughout). I was still pleasantly surprised when I found out the complete picture of the whole book. The best part of this book is that it isn’t anything like any other mystery books I’ve read. Pamela seems to have a 360 degree plan that she executes in a distinct way that is all her own. I applaud her for being different and love the way her mind works.
An edge of your seat thrilling suspenseful ride! A family camping trip that turned into a terror ride of twists and turns! A must read!
This book had nonstop surprises. It seemed to start slow but picked up speed. Every time it seemed an action was going to occur, it switched to a different piece of the story. It was like riding a roller coaster. Slow, build up to a certain point then whoosh, speeded up and switched directions. Loved it! Waiting anxiously for the next Patrick Flint And family story
I’ve read and cherrish What Doesn’t Kill You Series. Didn’t think I could like another series, however Pamela Fagan Hutchins has done for me again. The book just doesn’t have any slow spots. Starts wild and keeps going. I love it and will be buying the rest of the series. Thanks Pamela Fagan Hutchins
– This was a fascinating story of the Flint family that called for bravery from each member to keep a tragedy from happening. Suzanne, Flint’s wife, is going through her own horrifying experiences, while Patrick, Trish, and Perry are facing their own set of horrifying experiences. The story weaves the experiences going on with the family so the reader does not get lost. They all met their best in handling all that was tossed at them. They faced their terrors and bested them. It was an intense story that kept the pages turning and the reader entertained. I look forward to more adventures with Patrick Flint and his family.
Great book! Lots of action!! Keeps you on edge all the way through! Keeps you guessing what’s coming next! A can’t put down book.
I am a city girl, but this gave me a real appreciation for Wyoming. It also probably fostered my fear of being in the wilderness in a precarious situation. I also found the family dynamics pretty accurate and compelling. Just when you think fate is being pushed to its limits, something happened to a family member! I think I will be hooked on this series.
This is a fast moving story with more twists and turns than any switchback, but at its heart it is a story about determination, perseverance, and family. The author has done a great job of combing the two components. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
This book was a thrill a minute…really hard to put down. The bad guys were scary & unpredictable. Patrick Flint and his family were up against a crazy bunch of jerks, and somehow all made it out OK, each family member showing his or her courage when it counted the most. Looking forward to the next installment of this series!
This book introduces at least 5 plot lines in Chapter 1 whetting my appetite to find out how all would be resolved. There is a pending family camping trip for the young doctor and his family, a horse with a broken leg brought to the ER, a recent patient death being investigated, ER incoming patients high on amphetamines, and a shooting victim, and a 2nd vet patient brought to the ER, a dog who was injured by a bear trap. The twisty plot ties all these lines together into a smooth, well-executed rope of a story. I read the entire book in one sitting, it was that good.
A doctor in Buffalo, Wyoming just wants to go elk hunting with his family, but nothing turn out as expected. A great plot and wonderful characters, and lots of action and suspense,
Suspenseful read! It totally interrupted my Christmas schedule, I kept going back to read more.
Strong female characters, great description of the Wyoming scenery. Can you say TV movie?
This was a fun, fast, suspenseful read.Beautifully set in Wyoming with lots of plot twists and turns. Couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait for the next installment.
Pamela Fagan Hutchins is an excellent ‘keep turning the pages’ author. Switchback tells the story of a family vacation turned bizarre. (And don’t even think about staying home.) A great read with heart-pounding suspense on every page. Beautiful scenery description in the mountains of Wyoming. Definitely a must-read for anyone who likes mystery and suspense.
This book takes you on a roller-coaster ride from the first page to the last! Once you begin this book you can’t put it down. It is loaded with murder, kidnapping, self-defense, and very bad people. When Dr. Patrick Flint decides to take his family on an Elk Hunting camping trip where they had to pack in with horses, his wife, Susanna rebels and and doesn’t go. Since moving to Wyoming, Southern Belle Susanna has felt lost, save for one close friend. So Patrick, his young son and teenage daughter head out. Meantime, Susanna likes the solitude she is given with them gone…except…what happens to Susanna and her husband and children will change the lives of not only Susanna and Patrick but of their young children as well. Packing into the woods and facing the ultimate danger, will they make it out? Will they be saved? But how? With no way to communicate their plight can Patrick deal with the danger and consequences on his own? This is a terrific read that you don’t want to put down until the end and what a great end it is! I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I have always been a Pamela Hutchins reader, and this one caught my eye as I love Wyoming, and she was very original in her story line. I will enjoy reading her next book as well.
Impossible to put down!
I was on the edge of my seat throughout the story-I simultaneously wanted to read faster, and cover my eyes! The story, as Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ books always are, is extremely well written, and I cannot recommend it enough. I can’t wait for the next!
HELLO 2:45am! If you need to get up early the next day, don’t start reading this late in the evening. You will not be able to stop! This was ‘my stomach is in my chest and I think I stopped breathing’! OMG X 10! Not my usual reading genre, first time reading this author and I don’t remember why I agreed to read and review this book, but I am glad I did.
ER doctor and his kids go into the high ground in Wyoming to hunt elk. What is supposed to be spending uninterrupted time with his kids, turns into a nightmare. They are terrorised by a couple of hard guys on motorcycles not knowing that an incident is related to them. This bonding trip is not quite what the good doctor expected. There are a few storylines that eventually merge together.
Just an edge of the seat suspense! She takes you there. I believe I will read this author again after I recover from reading this book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Switchback is an excellent read by Pamela Hutchins. This is a fast paced and well written book that Pam’s fans will thoroughly enjoy. Anyone who hasn’t read any of her books will certainly become a fan after reading Switchback. There are several unexpected twists and turns throughout the book. The main character development is superb and everyone should be able to relate to not only the characters, but their personalities. The book is truly a page turner and will keep readers interested and involved as the book progresses. Keep up the good work Pam.
