All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful … last!” — Merry, Amazon reader
All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful getaway in the Wyoming mountains for his rare days off. He’s grown weary of the bicentennial celebrations, the angry families of patients, the rash of campers coming down from the mountains high on speed, and the midnight call-outs to cover for the town veterinarian. When his wife Susanne balks at the trip just as they’re walking out the door—leaving him to go it alone with his lovestruck teenage daughter Trish and eager-but-adolescent son Perry—Patrick is wounded but determined, despite the news of a murderer escaping custody on the other side of the mountains.
After two days of rain-soaked horseback riding to hunt and fish, Patrick’s gotten nothing but weird encounters, wet socks, and a whiny daughter. So, on the third day, when Trish begs to stay behind at their campsite to read, Patrick is secretly relieved.
Meanwhile back in town, Susanne’s had a rough time of it herself. A break-in, a wreck, and a premonition that something is terribly wrong with her family. Unable to ignore her growing fears, she enlists the help of a Wyoming-tough neighbor, and the two women make for the mountains.
When Patrick and Perry return to camp, Trish has vanished, along with the horses, the truck, and the trailer. Clues point in opposite directions. Did she run off with the boy whose note Patrick found at the camp? Or was she taken—as the hoof marks over their destroyed tent suggest? Whichever it was, the tracks lead into the mountains, not out of them. With help too far away to make it before Trish’s trail is washed away, Patrick and Perry embark on a desperate trek into the wilderness to find her, with Susanne not far behind them.

A totally different genre than Ms. Hutchins’ other books I’ve read, and I LOVED this just as much. Truly a multi-talented author.
Loved this series of books.
I read the first two books out of order. I really enjoyed the second one, so I went back and read the first. It was action-packed from start to finish. Even though I knew the outcome from book two, the plot twisted and turned and kept me interested and engaged until the very last page. I would highly recommend this book, series, and author.
OMG! This book was fantastic! So masterfully written, you become so involved in their story that you feel like they are actually people you know. Set against the backdrop of the Wyoming wilderness the story follows Dr Patrick Flint and his family from the hospital to their home to the wilderness. The series of nail-biting events will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. Kept me up reading late into the night! Can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
Great read. Fast paced. Page turner. Have loved all the books in the What Doesn’t Kill You series, but this one is a stand-out. Couldn’t put it down.
First, I have to confess to being a huge Pamela Fagan Hutchins [PFH] fan. I’ve read the Katie, Emily, Maggie, Michele, and Ava trilogies. I read them back-to-back like a chain smoker. They’re suspenseful, funny, angsty, and sexy. When I saw there was a new book/series coming out I was excited. Then I found out the protagonist was a male physician. At first, I was iffy. Aren’t there enough books out there that revolve around the “man”? I decided to give it a try.
Patrick Flint is married to Susanne, and they have two children and live in a small town in Wyoming. As I got further into the book, I became curious about the family. Patrick, a hard-working, good-intentioned husband, and father, Susanne, the wife and mother who’s reluctantly living in Wyoming, their teenage daughter who’s “in love,” and a young adolescent son who hasn’t quite found his voice.
Patrick is on his way home after working the night shift and is eager to embark on a long-planned family camping trip. At the last minute, Susanne decides she doesn’t want to go to Patrick’s extreme disappointment, but he insists that the trip is still on for both kids. Susanne stays home for some alone time, while Patrick and the kids head to the mountains for some horse camping, hunting, and fishing.
Oh, my Goddess. Things really go sideways, sketchy and dangerous at home and in the mountains. Okay, PFH has got me. It’s late, and I should be going to bed, but I make a deal with myself to read one more chapter before I turn out the light. Okay, just one more. I enjoyed the ride, and I’m looking forward to reading Snake Oil.
I received a digital copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Doctors, lawmen, nurses, and families will all be found in this interesting story about a doc trying to take a family vacation and all the adventure that ensues. Cop killer on the lose, doc’s daughter goes missing with all the camping equipment, and mom riding to the rescue with her neighbor. What’s next? Read this amazing story to find out. Enjoy!
I was a little unsure about this book as I am not the world’s biggest western fan, however it really won me over and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
There are a lot of things to enjoy, firstly, and very importantly from my perspective, the characters are really well described and are also believable and recognisable, but I also thought that the story was very cleverly written, particularly the way that the tension was built through the book. Finally I loved the descriptions of the wilderness that the action takes place in.
This is a brilliant start to a new series, and I am really looking forward to seeing where the future books in the series takes the family.
I received an advance copy of the book, but have voluntarily written this honest review.
Suspenseful, well-written, and informative. Those are the top three words that come to me but there is so much more. This was proof that a mother should never ignore her intuition. It was hard to put this book down. I look forward to more adventures with the Flint family.
Wowsa! this is a really awesome read! Fast moving full of twists and turns and filled with intense parts that will keep you on the edge of your seat! I could not put this book down! Lots of detail of Wyoming, this author puts you into the characters so well you feel you are them and in the situations! lOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Cannot wait for more!!!
Couldn’t stop reading! Loved the characters; felt like I was right there with them. I highly recommend giving this book your undivided attention. You won’t be disappointed.
A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. This one about the twist and turns that Patrick and his family goes through. It has struggles, adventure and plenty to keep your interest to keep turning the pages to get to the end. I cannot wait to read more adventures.
This was a wonderful story of the perfect vacation gone wrong! I love the way each chapter is devoted to developing each character. The story of a father’s courage and determination to save his family and a mother who just knows something isn’t right is so true in nature. Even the children are devoted to each other, argue as they may, much like in real life. This is an exciting, can’t put down read. The suspense lingered through every word. cant wait to read the next in the series!
This book had me by the seat of my pants. It was scary because this can be a bad world for females. It starts off with a family planning to go into the mountains for a hunting expedition. Mom backs out because she really doesn’t want to go. The kids have to go. There is plenty to regret by everyone involved by the end of the book. I thought the book was well written, just a bit too frightening for me. Because I read book 2 in this series before book 1, i had some knowledge that the average reader wouldn’t. The book totally engaged me. I read this book as an Advanced Reader Copy.
Beautiful settings and descriptions…although it’s frightening how much the situation in the wilderness begins to unravel for a father, son, and daughter so quickly. Family dynamics shift as well, their old comfort zones no longer work and they each begin to learn, grow, and depend on each other in different ways than before. A worthwhile read!
Switchback is an action-packed suspense-filled mystery. This novel about a family holiday gone horribly wrong will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Pamela Fagan Hutchins does an amazing job with this nail-biter. I am looking forward to the next Patrick Flint novel. I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing an honest review. I didn’t start the book for about a week after receiving it because it was the Christmas holidays and I was swamped! I’m almost glad I didn’t begin reading until after Christmas because I don’t know who would have done the cooking and baking and wrapping if I had! Once I started Switchback I couldn’t put it down. Late into the night even when I couldn’t keep my eyes open another minute and into the day when I knew I had to undecorate the house. I can’t recommend strongly enough to read this book! I loved the main characters, the descriptions of camping and horseback riding and the amazing scenery in Wyoming! They kept me going long after I should have been sleeping. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series, Snakebite. I also want to visit Wyoming, which is saying a lot coming from this Florida girl!
This book starts quickly and doesn’t let up! This is a spin-off from the WDKY series, but it is a very different feel. The doc and his family are supposed to be heading out on an elk hunt. Dad(doc) is really excited and so is the pre-teen son. The teenage daughter wants to stay with her friends and hopefully see or talk to a boy she is interested in; definitely less than thrilled about the trip. And mom? No desire to go. Doesn’t like anything about hunting. Mom stays home, dad and kids go and all hell breaks loose on both fronts! The story is told from multiple viewpoints and it works very well. Pre-order is available for the next book and I am ready for it to show up on my reader now
I liked this story. The characters are well written. I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary review.
Switchback hooked me right in, and I kept reading into the night – excellent writing with very relate-able characters. Several major events that keep the intrigue building. . . Excellent book on all levels!
