All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful … last!” — Merry, Amazon reader
All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful getaway in the Wyoming mountains for his rare days off. He’s grown weary of the bicentennial celebrations, the angry families of patients, the rash of campers coming down from the mountains high on speed, and the midnight call-outs to cover for the town veterinarian. When his wife Susanne balks at the trip just as they’re walking out the door—leaving him to go it alone with his lovestruck teenage daughter Trish and eager-but-adolescent son Perry—Patrick is wounded but determined, despite the news of a murderer escaping custody on the other side of the mountains.
After two days of rain-soaked horseback riding to hunt and fish, Patrick’s gotten nothing but weird encounters, wet socks, and a whiny daughter. So, on the third day, when Trish begs to stay behind at their campsite to read, Patrick is secretly relieved.
Meanwhile back in town, Susanne’s had a rough time of it herself. A break-in, a wreck, and a premonition that something is terribly wrong with her family. Unable to ignore her growing fears, she enlists the help of a Wyoming-tough neighbor, and the two women make for the mountains.
When Patrick and Perry return to camp, Trish has vanished, along with the horses, the truck, and the trailer. Clues point in opposite directions. Did she run off with the boy whose note Patrick found at the camp? Or was she taken—as the hoof marks over their destroyed tent suggest? Whichever it was, the tracks lead into the mountains, not out of them. With help too far away to make it before Trish’s trail is washed away, Patrick and Perry embark on a desperate trek into the wilderness to find her, with Susanne not far behind them.

Switchback: A Patrick Flint Novel by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a wonderful story that I have read. Thisis book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series writen by a brand new author and I can not wait to read book number two in this wonderful series. I highly recommend this story to all.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
A tense, satisfying thriller with suspense that builds with each new chapter. Pamela Fagan Hutchins fans will fall instantly in love with Patrick Flint and his young family as they navigate a camping adventure that turns out to be much more than they bargained for. Pamela layering of several points of view to tell the tale made this one a particularly fun read. Those who know her stuff will be pleased with the life and complexity she breathes into her characters. Her affection for the outdoors and knowledge of the nuances of the back country give Switchback the beauty of a Bob Ross painting with Alfred Hitchcock hidden among the trees.
Switchback by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is so much more than I expected. It’s not just a western, it’s an adventure into the back country of Wyoming and I loved it.
We first meet Doctor Patrick Flint when he is awakened with an emergency hospital call…and the adventure begins. His patient is a far cry from what he expects and I almost burst out laughing when I found out who she is. But that is a surprise you will have to find out for yourself.
In the small town of Buffalo, Wyoming, he is called on to perform double duty.
Uh oh. Patrick and the kids are heading out for a camping trip. Will they be the hunters, or the hunted. I am immediately hooked with a feeling of impending doom. The underlying current of suspense keeps me reading, making me have to know what happens next. Pamela Fagan Hutchins takes it even further than I anticipated and I love it.
Susanne, Patrick’s wife, wasn’t into hunting and stayed home, but her instincts made her feel something was wrong. And she was right to worry.
Meanwhile, Patrick is having flashbacks to Susanne, feeling something isn’t right and the visitors to their campsite only enhances those feelings. He is foolish to ignore them, but none of us think bad things are going to happen to us, do we? It’s always someone else, until it isn’t. I keep yelling at him to GO HOME, but he doesn’t hear me. LOL
“Courage is when something scares you and you do it anyway.”.
You may think, by looking at the cover, that this could be a simple western romance, so I want to tell you to buckle your seatbelt and hold on tight, because this is a wild ride.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Switchback by Pamela Fagan Hutchins.

A physician and his family move to Wyoming. Patrick decides to take his family on a hunting trip in the mountains. His wife, Susanne, decides to stay home and not go on the trip. Patrick and his children, Trish and Perry, go with their dad. An escaped prisoner breaks into their home and ties Susanne up. He takes clothes and food and leaves her tied to a chair. In the mountains Trish get kidnapped and it leads to a chase into the deep part of the mountains. A thrilling conclusion.
At first I thought it was a bit slow taking off, but every portion set you up for what was to come!! It was totally needed!! Essentially told by 3 of 4 family members (Patrick, Susanne and Daughter Trish) little brother Perry plays an integral part.
As all Pamela Fagan Hutchins novels (What Doesn’t Kill You series) Switchback has characters well developed, suspense, and not just strong male characters but female characters which I love.
Once again, Pamela’s descriptions of the area, Wyoming, and building characters you can ‘see and feel, and the building suspense and tension are extremely well done!!
I loved this book. What an excellent, realistic family dynamic. I love how she highlights the struggles we face trying to balance work life with home life with parent life with our own identity if self. It’s hard, and the balance is delicate! Good, exciting read, great action and suspense, and beautiful scenery! Love!
This is a gripping story that you wont be able to put down about a typical family in the 1970s.
A camping trip goes very wrong and is told from the whole families perspectives which will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.
While not what I would normally read I am desperately waiting for more.
No spoilers in my review, but here’s what you need to know. A well-written story of mystery and suspense in a family camping trip gone horribly wrong. Amazing descriptions of the setting and the story, an edge of your seat nail-biter that will keep you swiping your Kindle because you just won’t be able to find an appropriate stopping point! Initially, I agreed to proofread the book for errors and inconsistencies, but got so engrossed in the book, I just didn’t, so I’m pretty sure that speaks for itself…so now, I am providing my honest review. Take a chance on this first in series, the only thing you’ll be sorry about is that you have to wait for the next book!
Catch your breath before starting this action-adventure mystery because once you start it, you will find it hard to put it down.
Plenty of suspense as well as good family drama. Each of the characters annoyed me at times but also made me love them in other times. They may fight and have a lot of issues but in the end they manage to come through for each other. I found it to be entertaining. One thing though, if you can’t handle an animal death then this may not be the book for you. If you can get past it I think the book is worth it overall but I know some people are very sensitive to the subject.
I’m a big fan of Longmire, both book and TV series. This mystery gives it a run for the money.
Plenty of action: getting stuck in the winter snows, meeting a mountain lion at exactly the wrong time. Plenty of family time as you meet the hero-doctor Patrick Flint, his long-suffering wife, and incorrigible adolescent kids.
A fun read and the first mystery of six (so far) in the series.
I’ve lost track of how many books I’ve read by this author, which is easy to do because she is so prolific. And now she’s started a whole new series with Switchback. Part family drama, part adventure, the story is set in Wyoming, where physician Patrick Flint has moved his somewhat reluctant wife and teenage daughter and son so he can enjoy the outdoors—camping and hunting on horseback in the magnificent wilds of that state. Filled with humor and heart, the action heats up when a hunting trip goes wrong and the daughter is kidnapped. Danger abounds, from mountain lions to a pack of really bad guys. There’s not a dull moment in this page-turner
Switchback (Patrick Flint #1), my second read/listen from author Pamela Fagan Hutchins, after reading/listening to Act One (What Doesn’t Kill You #0.5). Well-written & enjoyable, a cute, clean entertaining mystery/thriller. I was given an Author’s Direct copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of the author as narrator. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author, my only question is why did I wait so long to read this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
I totally enjoyed this page-turner which is set in Wyoming and deals with how one family on a camping trip copes with the disappearance of their teenage daughter, It’s fast-paced with great characters and loads of surprises so I couldn’t stop reading – had to see what happened next. An excellent read.
What an enjoyable read! A fast-paced action-packed page turner that will leave you reading at breakneck speed. Beautifully descriptive, set in the mountains of Wyoming, Switchback tells the story of family, resilience, courage and hope. A refreshing change by one of my favourite authors.
Could not keep reading. Characters weren’t realistic (in their actions)
Great book. Very entertaining.
Kept my interest till the very end
After a bit of a slow beginning to the story, it picked up nicely. Then, it got exciting and finished with gusto.
Amazing story! That’s about it. There’s everything a reader might enjoy in this book. The Flint family, wonderful dog, involved community and talented people at the hospital. Add to that, Rangers and other local authorities that are needed in this story-line from beginning to end. Let’s not forget an unruly teenage girl, a tag-along brother and parents that don’t understand (in their minds). I won’t spoil this wonderful book but it’s a can’t miss read for anyone who enjoys adventure. I’m on to the next book by this author.
