Killing the messenger is frowned upon. Okay, then… What about laying the messenger on the nearest flat surface and making her scream with pleasure? From the moment Hayden Reynolds approaches Griffin Sutherland in the local, Florida dive bar, all he can think about is fisting her dark curls and stroking those gorgeous curves. But hell would freeze over before she allowed him to touch her because … her because she’s the woman he left behind five years earlier. And now she’s there to deliver a message—an ultimatum—from his estranged father. Blackmail forces Griffin, black sheep of his powerful Texas family, back home to play nice. But the terms of his bargain say nothing about not satisfying his need for the woman he’s never forgotten…never stopped wanting…
Hayden is no longer the naive girl who once fiercely loved a golden Sutherland and believed he and a maid’s daughter could live happily ever after. Griffin broke her all those years ago, but she forced herself to pick up the pieces and move on. Now he’s back in Texas, acting the part of the proper, dutiful son. But there’s nothing proper about the detailed—dirty—descriptions of how he wants to touch her…take her… Though her body heats every time he’s near, she refuses to surrender to his special brand of passion. Griffin may have returned home, but he’s leaving again. And this time he won’t take her heart with him…

This is a great book about love, family, friendship, trust, forgiveness and second chances. I was really routing for Hayden and Griffin to be able to work out their years of hurt and take a chance on each other. The characters are strong and independent and the storyline is great and includes enough of a backstory about their pasts to easily follow along with each character’s inner dialogue when reminiscing.
Griffin Sutherland came from a wealthy, powerful family with a demanding, controlling father who wanted him to step up and take his place in the family business. He did everything he could to be the rebel of the family, not bending to his father’s demands, wanting to be his own man and make his own way. When he has finally had enough, he decides to get out before he loses himself completely to his father’s demands. He only has one tie to his home and though it breaks a part of him, he decides to do the unselfish, honorable thing and leave her behind. She has to be free to finish school and live her dreams, untainted by him and his family. He leaves and heads to Florida to find himself and starts his own construction company. After 5 years he is doing well, thinking of his past only as bad memories until that one day sitting in a bar he hears a voice from his past that rocks him to his core; even more disturbing is the letter she is carrying from his father. Forced home to be the dutiful son gives him the exact opportunity he needs to remind Hayden of what they once had and could have again and that this time he is playing for keeps.
Hayden Reynolds has grown a lot over the last 5 years; no longer the naïve girl Griffin left behind. She has a Bachelor’s in Managerial Studies and an M.B.A. in Finance and is currently the personal assistant to one of the most powerful businessmen in Texas. She has had to deal with a lot working for Griffin’s father but this was the worst yet, sending her to Florida to find his wayward son and personally deliver a letter requesting his return home. He shattered her heart years ago when he left her behind and she refuses to let him have any effect on her now. She is determined to deliver his father’s message and get back to Texas as fast as she can. She is not prepared for the intense reaction to the man he has become or the flooding of memories from their shared past. Can she keep the past buried and keep him at arm’s length or will she succumb to the overpowering feelings he still invokes in her. Once they open up about their time apart, will it help heal old wounds and give them a second chance? Or when he leaves again, this time will it be for good?
