In Sweet Home Alaska, Beth Carpenter delivers another wonderfully entertaining clean romance in the Northern Lights series. Initially drawn to the series by the Alaskan setting, I quickly developed an appreciation for Carpenter’s smooth, mature writing, warm characters, and creative storytelling. Northern Lights is a great series of stories with connected characters that you get to revisit, although each story stands alone. For fans of sweet romance, a Beth Carpenter story is not to be missed.
Sweet Home Alaska features one of my favorite themes, a second chance at love, building on a relationship previously established. For Dr. Scott Willingham and paramedic Volta Morgan, it had been ten years since their breakup, instigated by Scott. I loved their spark-filled initial meeting in the opening pages, and had to laugh at Scott’s attempt to apologize for arbitrarily deciding that Volta deserved better than the type of relationship his job with the humanitarian organization DEMA (Doctors, Education, and Medicine for All) allowed him to offer at the time. Let’s just say that it didn’t go well, in spite of each one’s obvious feelings for the other.
I loved how the state of Alaska becomes a major character as the author vividly conveys not only its awesome majesty, but its people. Sweet Home Alaska focuses on Alaska’s outlying villages, where the rugged beauty also carries some disadvantages, especially in the area of medical needs relating to pregnancy. Scott’s job is one of gathering information as he assesses these needs, and having Volta along as his liaison with the people she knows well gives their relationship a chance to grow. Then there’s Volta’s daughter – the precious, scene stealing, “almost eight” Emma who loves horses with a passion.
Sweet Home Alaska is the complete package – a sweet romance filled with rich characters and depth. I enjoyed the chemistry between Scott and Volta, and learned a lot about the needs of people in rural Alaska. Here’s hoping for more stories in this engaging series!
With the Harlequin Heartwarming series, highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book through Prism Book Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Beth Carpenter’s series is full of cherished reads!
Beth Carpenter’s voice is always a joy to read, and this story is no exception. Her books satisfy my longing and curiosity about Alaska as well as introduce me to wonderful characters.
Sweet Home Alaska is a sweet, clean, second chance romance between Volta, a paramedic and widow, and Scott, a world travelling doctor. These characters still have chemistry 10 years later. Can this globe trotting doctor and a mother find a compromise that will allow them to stay together? The story immediately drew me in and kept my attention. I loved the descriptions of pre-natal care and medical emergencies in remote locations of Alaska. I always learn a lot from Ms. Carpenter’s books. This book is a must read for anyone who loves a good, clean romance.
Loved this book Another great book by an amazing Author this was a page turner picked it up and didn’t want to put it down until I finished it! If you haven’t read this book You should You wont be disappointed! I gave this book a 5 star because it is a great book!
Sweet Home Alaska is the fifth book in the Northern Lights series, but it is the first I’ve read in the series. If you haven’t either, don’t worry! You can jump right in with this book! I didn’t feel like I was lost or missing anything by starting with this book. And believe me; you want to read this book! If you do go back to read the other books, you will know who ends up with whom, but we usually already know that romances have happy endings with the two main characters getting together. So, I’m not worried about going back to read the other books.
I’ve said this before, but I love that Harlequin has this clean, sweet Heartwarming line of books. Sweet Home Alaska is a wonderful book about two people getting a second chance at love. I really appreciated the fact that Volta and Scott already knew each other and had been in love before, so the romance that builds between them again doesn’t feel forced or rushed.
Volta is a widow, and she loved her husband very much. He was good and kind, and they made each other happy. But when Scott comes back and her feelings are rekindled, she feels guilty. She feels like maybe she didn’t love her husband enough or make him happy enough. The author lets her characters have real feelings. They have doubts and have flaws. They’re not perfect, and circumstances aren’t perfect either. In this way, Sweet Home Alaska really delivers believable characters. I love that the author can give us a 7 year old who acts like a 7 year old, and a 20 something sister-in-law who is angry because she feels like it’s Volta’s fault her brother died. All of these characters really deliver and make this such an enjoyable book to read.
Of course, I love the Alaskan setting, and the story is fantastic. But I’ll leave it up to you to read this and find out just how great Sweet Home Alaska really is! Enjoy!
“Sweet Home Alaska” is book 5 of Beth Carpenter’s Northern Lights miniseries with Harlequin Heartwarming.
Doctor Scott Willingham has an ulterior motive to go to Alaska for a study on prenatal care in rural areas. He wants to find Volta Morgan, the woman he left ten years ago.
Volta, a widow and mother, is an emergency responder and seeing Scott out-of-the-blue brings out her maternal instincts to protect her daughter. And her heart.
Scott and Volta try to find their way back to each other after years and miles have come between them.
While giving us a warm love story, Ms. Carpenter also provides insight into Alaska living.
this is a story between Scott a doctor and Volta, her dad was an electrician . he can not get over her but he still wants to travel and help a lot of people. she wants to stay at home , can they work it out or will they have to say good by, I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review. love the way she describes the mountains and animals. and when they are in the plane going to the different place that need medical help.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK #SHATour
Sweet Home Alaska is a sweet heartwarming read. I didn’t read the first book in this series, but I think this one is fine as a stand alone. Author Beth Carpenter does a wonderful job of writing detailed scenes of Alaska throughout the story, and even though I’ve never been there, I felt as though I was in the middle of this story. I did get annoyed at Scott and Volta a number of times because they were making a relationship more difficult than it should have been. I was impressed at the characters so craftly created, each fitting their place in the story and developing so well as the plot continued.
I like the way Ms. Carpenter weaves the awesome beauty of Alaska and the difficulty its citizens have because of the horrific weather, as well as the vast space that makes it hard to get around in an emergency. The scenes crafted about these difficult issues shows in an amazing way what people who live there go through. All in all, this is a wonderful, sweet and clean romance that will give you hours of enjoyment.

It’s a wonderful read! The journey that Scott and Volta (interesting name for a girl ) embark on is engrossing and heartfelt. I genuinely enjoyed reading the story that weaves the past and present of the characters together in a way that brings them to life.
“Love wasn’t a chain, binding people together. If you loved someone, you wanted their happiness, even if it meant sacrificing some of your own.”
I received an ARC of this book for review. I was not required to write a favorable review. All opinions in this review are my own.
I loved reading this sweet, heartwarming love story! I really enjoyed reading about the day to day life in Alaska and Dr Scott and Volta’s travels. The author did a wonderful job with the imagery and describing their travels-I felt like I was flying and experiencing Alaska with them!
Clean romance, great characters, and interesting story line. Easy and fun to read-highly recommend!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
Beth Carpenter has such a gentle way of building a story. Her books are easy to fall into and I always feel like I’m on a journey that will take me somewhere satisfying.
Scott and Volta are two very interesting people with even more interesting jobs. I loved the setting in Alaska and the work both Scott and Volta were doing. There is history between Scott and Volta which adds another layer to the dynamics of their relationship as does Volta’s young daughter. As I said before, this book is very gentle in nature and the story line progresses slowly but it was a good journey and I really enjoyed it. I could see this book becoming a TV series or a Hallmark movie.
This book is part of a series but can easily stand alone. I’ve only read one other book in this series and felt nothing lacking.
Content: mild peril, kissing

If I had to give out my best book of the year award right now, it would be this book. It is that good. This isn’t my first book by Ms. Carpentar and she never disappoints. Ms. Carpentar also brings emotional depth to her stories but also, I feel like I’m in Alaska. Like Northern Alaska feels. I loved that show. You need to look it up. Anyway. Plus, her characters are always phenomenal. And, there is a child involved but Emma is her own character and I loved her.
This is a great second chance romance from the heart. I completely understood the commitment issues that Scott had from the beginning. His family life growing up wasn’t the best but he did what he thought he had to do in Hawaii with Volta. Volta is guarded when it comes to Scott and she has every right. And then her daughter, Emma, takes a strong liking to Scott and in time, Scott to her. I loved their relationship and it woke something in Scott that he never thought would happen. Volta is a strong woman. Fierce when it comes to her daughter and loyal to her job and patients. What I didn’t like was how she let her sister in law talk to her that way about her late husband (her brother) like that. Sure, I understood that she missed her brother but I would have put her in her place. It grated on my nerves a bit but hey, it’s just me.
Their love story is a sweet one but a very slow build. Like I said, a second chance at romance but they still had a lot to work out between them and within themselves. Trust, commitment are some of the issues that they have but the love has never died. Communication this time around is the key to their romance and it works. I especially liked how Ms. Carpentar showed Volta’s relationship with her own parents and her in-laws. While her parents weren’t exactly thrilled, they didn’t judge her decision but listened to her and the concerns they had. Emma is cute and I understood her frustration when Scott. Her relationship with him bloomed and I loved watching it.
Peeps, you really need to read Ms. Carpentar and this series. She brings emotional depth, humor, great characters, and a setting to die for. I recommend Ms. Carpentar to anyone that will listen to me. And yes, this is a series but each book stands alone.
When I was given the opportunity to read the fifth installment from Beth Carpenter’s series, Northern Lights, I knew I had to take it. I enjoyed the last book in the series,
An Alaskan Proposal, and Sweet Home Alaska did not disappoint. I loved this book! It tells the story of Dr Scott Willingham coming to Alaska to find his ex-girlfriend, Volta Morgan. He intended to find closure but finds himself intrigued and attract to her more than ever. Especially, when he meets her sweet little daughter, Emma. Can he tell Volta goodbye one last time? How will Volta react to seeing him again after all of these years?
I would give Sweet Home Alaska one hundred stars if I could. I highly recommend this book for readers who love a sweet, clean, and heartwarming story of second chances, forgiveness and redemption. I have got to read the other books in this series.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
Sweet Home Alaska by Beth Carpenter was a delightful read. Volta and Scott had a romantic past. It had ended because Scott didn’t think he could keep a long term relationship with his job. He planned to be a doctor that traveled around the world.
Volta’s heart had been broken by falling in love with Scott in the past. She tries to keep from falling for Scott again. He doesn’t show up in Alaska on accident though. He wants to talk through with her the bad break up from the past to feel better in the present. Scott and Volta both try and fail to keep their emotions from falling for each other again.
The story takes place in Alaska which is like a different world for me, a Texas girl. I don’t like snow, but reading about the unique beauty of Alaska and the adventures makes me want to travel there.
Volta’s daughter is a sweet addition to the story. I enjoy reading books with growing family love. The story had more slow and unneeded scenes than I prefer, but I still enjoyed the sweet love story.
It’s a clean romance with heart pumping moments. Enjoy reading Sweet Home Alaska.

Sweet Home Alaska
Such a fun story with Emma, who is Volta daughter. I would have never thought of horseback riding in Alaska.
Scott comes to town to work on a project with Volta. They knew each other years ago. He broke up with her because of his job. She married but ended up a widow.
I enjoy books that are set in Alaska. This one is a lot different than most.
I received a advanced copy of the book from the author and Prism book tours. I was not required to write an positive review.
When I was taking my final college courses, my parents moved from Idaho to a small bush community 350 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska. The only way in and out was via small plan. The town had a total of seven miles of road that mostly circled the airport. Groceries were bought during visits to Anchorage and packaged up with luggage and no one in Aniak drove a car (it was snowmobiles in the winter and 4-wheelers in the summer). And Beth Carpenter’s Sweet Home Alaska brings that kind of Alaska living to life for others who haven’t experienced it.
Carpenter takes readers to these places, sharing the majesty and beauty of Alaska while highlighting a few of the difficulties involved with living in these remote areas, specifically prenatal care. Oh, but the author doesn’t stop there. There’s a second chance romance you can’t help but root for, a sweet little horse-loving girl, and a bit of family drama.
In fact, there was so much to love about this book, I can’t pinpoint what I enjoyed the most. You’ll just have to grab the book and decide for yourself which is the best part of Sweet Home Alaska.

3.5-4 stars.
Well, this was lovely.
We have Volta and Scott, they had a love affair a decade ago that left them both heartbroken, particularly Volta. Ten years later and when they meet again, they realize things are far from over between them.
Scott heads into Alaska for a study, he does great work for people in far away places who need medical assistance. However, he also goes there to find Volta and try to see if what they had in the past is still there. On boy, is it, lol. Volta is a widow with a little girl who loves her life, so seeing Scott again sure messes with her head at first.
It was fun to see these two reconnect and find new things about each other. It’s been a decade after all. There were some ups and downs, old wounds opened and gorgeous Alaska views; and just all in all, a lovely read.
*Thank you to the author for providing a copy for which I’m giving my honest opinion*
With Scott & Volta’s history & Scott’s current job, they had a lot of obstacles to overcome. Emma’s aunt Stacy sure didn’t help matters! Volta had wonderful support from family & friends that’s so important for a single mom. Alaska sounds like such a beautiful place. Another wonderful book by Beth Carpenter.
Sweet reunion! With the next book in her beloved Northern Lights series, Beth Carpenter continues to show us the beauty of gorgeous Alaska. Her words bring the location to life time and again through out the series. With the latest book, first loves reunite years later to find their love never died … but their circumstances aren’t any better now than the first time things fell apart. Fast paced, great connection between the characters with the sweet addition of an adorable little girl. Really loved their story!
Once upon a time, Volta Morgan thought she would be living a different life, but things happened and turned her world upside down. Living back in her home state of Alaska for the last decade has rewarded her with a daughter that she adores and a job that’s very satisfying. To say she’s shocked when a blast from the past enters her world is putting it mildly!
Doctor Scott Willingham walked away from Volta more than a decade ago for the sake of his career. He’s been satisfied with that over the years, but there’s never been a time when she’s left his mind, so he decides to take on a job that will take him to Alaska where he plans to look her up and satisfy his need to know that everything turned out okay for her in life. He’s surprised to find that the attraction between them is still flaring strong … and he manages to fit into her ready made family a little too well!
