As part of a family where life happens to you, fifteen-year-old Carasine Busey is devastated but not surprised when her family drops everything in Sweet Hollow, Louisiana to follow her dad’s shaky career as a welder. It’s not especially shocking, either, when he abandons them all shortly after they settle into their new home in the city.
Carasine, her mom Rhonda, and the rest of the Busey clan have adapted to roll with the punches. From Rhonda’s secret broken heart to Great-Great-Grandpa Jimbo’s eccentric failed dreams, Carasine and her family are used to disappointment.
It’s not until Carasine gets a second chance with an unlikely pair of long-lost relatives that she realizes her path in life might be up to her to navigate. Being their flesh and blood convinces her that there may be some hope for her after all.

just couldn’t get in to it. But I will try again.
A bit tragic and sad.
Too much back and forth. Did not finish.
Sad, funny, real all at once
I did not like it.
Not. Really a cohesive story
This is a story of several generations of dysfunctional women that left me feeling disappointed. As I read, I kept thinking there must be more to this but there wasn’t. I was a bit confused at the end.
After three generations, one of the females in this family finally escapes getting pregnant in high school and having to raise a child with an uninterested spouse or alone. Not a page turner but, you keep plugging alone to see if one of the women finally figures out how to escape the cycle.
Too much useless information
I had trouble keeping track of the different generations that were jumping back and forth through the story. Took concentration book good book. Enjoyed it.
Totally involved with each of the women in this book. Hated to reach the ending!
A sad commentary on the lives of the poor.
The four generations of women were very believable and unforgettable characters.
I absolutely LOVED this book! The characters were so REAL. The time jumping kept me on my toes and I was impressed by the way all of the characters were tied together. I highly recommend this author. I am currently reading another one of her books, and it is just as well written.
I liked that the book goes back and forth with the characters and dates of time. That kept it interesting for me.
Jumping back and forth between characters and time periods was not enjoyable reading for me. It was distracting to the flow of the story.
This was an ok read
It jumped around in different time periods. Had to really pay attention to figure the relationships between the characters in the different time periods.
Not my type of book
I enjoyed reading this book but it seemed that the generations of women were destined to make similar poor choices over and over. Found it frustrating in that sense.
