Mike Kraus weaves a tale that makes you care about the characters and believe the events he describes.
Rick is just leaving the airport in L.A. when disaster strikes. His wife Dianne and three children back home in Virginia begin to experience similar events.
This is the first instalment in the post apocalyptic series, Surviving the Fall. The author has developed a inventive scenario for the collapse of society as we know it. While similar in some ways to EMP stories, it has unique and thought provoking aspects that sets it apart. The story is told from both Rick’s (away) and Dianne’s (at home) point-of-view. This allowed for a glimpse into what they might experience in different settings. The storyline is faced paced, filled with action, personal drama, danger, self exploration and a great sense of urgency. The positive and negative aspects of human nature is revealed under the extreme circumstances the characters are placed in. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I liked the general premise and idea of the series. Things just started to get to far fetched for me in the latter books. I guess I was looking for a realistic approach. I did enjoy things overall, and would explore other books by the author.
I was able to purchase this entire series on sale for only 0.99 and what a deal it was! It was a series of shorter books that was nice to read as a set so that there was no interruption. It is action packed and unpredictable. If you like action post apocalyptic fiction then you should enjoy this book series. A malicious mutating software virus destroys the electronic infrastructure through out the world. This story follows a small group of survivors who struggle to overcome adversity, try to stop the virus and get home. Nicely done action story.
I like books about survival and end times. I don’t know why, but I actually feel like I learn some things from them, just in case I need the information at some time in the future. This book series is an easy read, and I generally can’t read a book quickly enough to even post a review because I fall asleep when I do have time to read it, or it just isn’t good enough to make me choose it over TV or other activities I can do. But surprisingly this book was engrossing enough for me to read the whole series! I read it during the day when I could squeeze in time, and after I went to bed at night I read for an hour or so, when I generally only go to sleep! The only thing I didn’t really like, was that the author had a Forward or Preface before each new series, that told about what he was thinking and why he decided to put this or that in. It was somewhat interesting if someone was a beginning writer and appreciated the thought process behind the story, but for me, I just wanted to see what happened next! I also didn’t want to read these sections because it gave hints of what was going to happen in the next chapter, so I just skipped that part and read the story! I am reading another series by this author now and like it as well. I’ll let you know about it when I finish it!
