When Robin Matheson’s husband is killed in Afghanistan, she finds herself suddenly alone: an outsider in a community grieving for the hometown hero it never really knew. Though the thought of spending the rest of her life without Tavis is exhausting, Robin has no choice but to pull herself together for the sake of their son. She finds some satisfaction in cutting ties with Tav’s obnoxious best … friend, Cyril—a 500-pound hacker who didn’t even bother to come to the funeral.
Unfortunately, her three-year-old decides Cyril is now his best buddy, and Robin can’t bear to take anything else away from her son. A few hot dogs and video games won’t do any permanent damage… right?
Cyril doesn’t magically transform into a good person—or even a decent one—but he does prove to be a better role model than Robin expected. Gradually, she also begins to realize that Cyril may be the one person who truly understands the magnitude of her loss.
He also knows far more about her husband’s death than he’s been letting on.
Ramsey Hootman’s trademark blend of humor and heart shines in this offbeat tale of love, loss, and exasperation—guaranteed to leave you breathless at the end.

The main character is amazing. Really nice and modern. Love the story line.
It was different and so was the outcome. I was engrossed in it till the very end.
this is a very enjoyable book. A little sad, a little funny, even a little romantic. A definite take off on Cyrano de Bergerac. It is really worth reading.
Good book – – very different
I would have liked to know what happens next. Do they visit him in prison? Did he get out with good behavior? What happened when he got out? What happened in her life after she burned the letters? Alot of unanswered questions. Need a sequel!
I would like to give it 4.5 stars. I couldn’t put it down!
Very easy read
This was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. And, yes, I caught on the the Cyril/Cyrano thing pretty early on, but even though the book was a takeoff on the old classic, the way it was written, so raw and real and honest, I didn’t think much about it, I was so caught up in the story of “Cereal” and Seth and Robin. The Afghanistan thing was brilliant, and I suspect, well researched. My only criticisms are these: 1) As a professional manuscript editor, as well as a writer myself, I stumbled on several typos–including “Robing” instead of “Robin”–but fortunately for the author, the story was so compelling they only briefly pulled me out of it. 2) The ending was a little too abrupt and too cryptic for my taste. Did Robin’s actions in burning the letters mean she was freeing herself of Cyril or Tavis, or both? (I confess to falling a little for “Cereal” myself, despite his morbid obesity, and I can’t help hoping it was written that way to leave room for a sequel.) Terrific read!
I really enjoyed reading this book!! I was laughing one minute and crying the next! I recommend it to everyone!
You grow to love or at least like the characters. The ending took me by surprise.
Loved it!! Very different but you rooted for Cyril throughout the whole book, hoping for his HEA. Would highly recommend this author and thus book.
Unexpected plot/subject matter. Characters are unique and it doesn’t end with a pretty bow to tie things up happily ever after, which is nice for a change.
Book was a great word play and I didn’t even get it until the end I won’t spoil it for other slow on the up takes like me but when I got it I had to laugh. Excellent read with just the right amount of twists to keep the reader interested
Loved this book. One of those books on my list to read again and again.
Would be better without profanity !!!
Boring.
A good story, that may happen more times than anyone knows.
Good book, I did feel it was a little drawn out in parts.
Unusual
no thank you
