Sam and Jane Archer walk out of a backcountry-hiking trip into a living nightmare. Their car is vandalized and dead, along with every other vehicle in the trailhead parking lot. Unable to get a cell phone signal, and spooked by a threatening encounter–they resign themselves to a long hike home, suspecting a possible EMP attack against the United States.
What they discover along the way shakes them to the core!
The electrical grid has been down for two weeks, plunging the world as they once knew it into complete chaos. Citizens live in helpless terror of violent gangs–the police hunted down and killed on sight. Food and essential resources have dwindled to nothing, taken by the wild bands of marauders that have risen from the collapse to murder and plunder at will.
Little hope remain, as Jane, a local police officer, and her husband Sam, a military veteran, start the harrowing journey home to save their only daughter Lea–before she is consumed by the madness.

I found it a little hard to get immersed in
Warning – This is like the first part of a long book – it leaves you hanging without ending. You have to get the next book in the series (I’m not sure how many you need to buy to find out how the story ends). That said, I did enjoy the story and characters, and at least it didn’t end in a cliff hanger. The story is about some preppers and how they try to survive bad guys out to get them after a widespread power outage.
Sam was much too weak as a character, to the point it detracted from the overall story. Needed some work with prepping details. However, it was a good read.
While this may be one of the disaster scenarios, more practical information could have been added as well as more character detail.
Interesting take on post-catastrophic world. I HATED that there was no explanation for what caused the catastrophe. Too many loose ends with the story…to many easy explanations for things occurring in the plot. Not sure there is enough interest in reading the next book.
Do not buy this book. the book is ok until the parents leave their child because the utility knife is too dull to cut a tow rope bindings? then they leave the child alone when they could just ambush the five men who have abused her. the author failed on parental love with that plot twist. I was sickened by the authors manipulative plot management. not believable at all. what were you thinking. will not finish book will not buy another by this author. I don’t recall ever being so furious at a writer for wasting my time.
Not a fan of post apocalyptic books
Typical EMP apocalyptic book. Was interesting enough to finish reading, but not interesting enough for me to engage the second book in the series. Characters were not particularly engaging, slow plot development.
Please disregard the following review. I was referring to a different book. My Mistake.:
Interesting story line, but the plot development was too implausible for me. Plus not geographically accurate, e.g., there are no 14,000 ft peaks in Wyoming. And, if one got to the top of Gannett Pk, Wyoming’s highest point, you’d be on a summit, with no place for shelter, etc. Plus, they never had to stop to replenish the water in their steam engine. Their were water stops every 20 miles or so, along the UP mainline across Wyoming.
