I wasn’t going to read this, but after the inanity of too many KU books I needed something meatier. A lot of conflicting reviews with a common thread that the hero Bracebridge is not a nice guy. He’s not. He’s not exactly mean, but he breaks the heroine’s heart repeatedly by saying things like, “I’ll never love anyone but Anne”. Ouch.
Basic plot: Emily’s (the heroine) totally worthless, selfish, self-centered, drunken, petty and spiteful gambleholic father wants to sell yet another daughter into a marriage to pay off the debts he’s so worthlessly, selfishly -please see above- keeps incurring. Needs to die a painful death. Painful.
Bracebridge, who the father hates, rescues and offers marriage in part because she needs rescuing from horrible husband and added bonus he knows it will enrage the father. In Lord Ruin, the father stopped Bracebridge’s marriage to the heroine’s oldest sister, Anne, Anne, Anne, Anne…Perfect Anne.
So we have MOC , revenge, unrequited love squared as Emily has loved the hero for as many years as the H has loved the older sister.
First, the sex/romance scenes are sizzling. Ay caramba, I am blushing so the couple has that going for them. Actually that’s all they have going for them. A sizzling connection and the fact that the heroine is not only intelligent but has the quintessential spine of steel, make that Vibranium. Sorry, lots of Avenger movies on lately.
They are also unfortunate enough to have one of the most horrible collection of family members in addition to the aforementioned father. Perfect Anne and her perfect husband come to check on the marriage wherein Emily’s BIL offers to find evidence for a divorce. Evidence of abuse, evidence of Bracebridge’s adultery, heck he’ll take evidence that Emily committed adultery. He’s not picky.
More sex, the hero says more stupid stuff like, “Why don’t you let ANNE help you entertain the local people.” The h freezes emotionally but more sex makes it a little bearable plus the hero gets a clue that his wife is more than a beautiful face.
Unbeknownst to the heroine, another of her sister’s hires someone to find out about any adultery on the part of anyone that can get these two lovebirds divorced. The fact that the heroine will be ostracized by society as a divorcee or that she doesn’t want to be divorced doesn’t seem to matter to her loving family. Plus no one in the family spares her the knowledge that this marriage is bad for her because of Bracebridge’s feelings for ANNE. Subtle they aren’t.
Lady Aldreth fell silent for several moments. “I became your enemy the moment you married Emily knowing that she loves you when you do not.”
Meanwhile the spine of Vibranium heroine is saving kittens, charming the butler, breaking parasols over criminals.
I kid, as the heroine is truly an awesome character with more pride and more sense than anyone else in the book. The hero isn’t too happy with the interference either as he really likes having sex with his pretty wife and slowly as in like a glacier realizes that he may have overestimated his love for Anne.
The HEA is pretty abrupt, and I bought it. I can’t help but feeling that his lust subconscious was at work and all that passion was indicative of his true love. I’m just going to go with that.
4 1/2 Stars!! Book three in the Sinclair sisters series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone. Told in dual POV with HEA. It is steamier than most historical romance, and I like that. Emily the youngest Sinclair sister is known for her beauty. With her three older sisters now married she is left to care for her father. The Earl of Bracebridge has been nursing a broken heart for years. He has loved only Anne Sinclair and hasn’t gotten over her marriage to his best friend three years ago. When Emily needs saving from her father’s devious match making, he steps in to save her. Emily has loved him for years, but knows he loves her sister still. Their marriage and relationship have them both opening their eyes and hearts and learning each other. It takes time for their physical relationship to develop into love. I loved the epilogue and seeing all the Sinclair sisters together!!
