Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the final installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series–Summoned to Thirteenth Grave. Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plane for eternity -which is exactly the amount of time it takes to make a person stark, raving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s … looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.
She’s missed her daughter. She’s missed Reyes. She’s missed Cookie and Garrett and Uncle Bob. But now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine for a broken heart? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

I waited and waited to finally read this book – the final book! – in the Charley Davidson series by one of my all-time favorite authors, and now that I have, I’m in denial and going through withdrawals! I almost clicked tear-jerker on this… and even though I wasn’t gushing with tears, there were a few moments. This has been one of the absolute best series I have read! And with the ending, there just has to be more coming in a spin-off. (I mean, I’ve already got Graveyard Shift loaded and ready on my my Kindle.) If you follow Darynda, you’ll know what I mean. This book capped off a fantastic series full of intrigued, humor (so much snarky humor!), sexy, schmexy romance; not to mention twists and turns that will have your head spinning and your heart racing to figure out just what the heck is going on. I so look forward to reading more of Darynda’s work, which, of course, I have just waiting to be cracked open.
I couldn’t wait to read this final chapter of the Charley Davidson series, but it was also heartbreaking — so many goodbyes! Like all the other books, I laughed out loud, gasped in surprise, and wiped away a few tears. I was really worried about the ending (HOW do you write a happy ending for two other-wordly gods, IF they get happy endings). I never would have guessed how the book would end, but it was oddly satisfying.
Overall, this series was quite a bit steamier than I prefer, but I just couldn’t pass up the brilliant blend of humor and drama. It’s such a rare find.
I’m sad to see the series end, but I’m sure I’ll revisit these books and characters again.
R-rated for sex and swearing.
When it comes to the last book in a fabulous and fun series, I find myself fumbling for what to say. Like everyone else I go into grand finale books with the mixed feelings of sadness and excitement because ‘this is it!!!’, right? So, my game plan was to savor and take my time… shot that sucker to pieces. I devoured this book in one day. Other fans will not blame me.
Summoned to Thirteenth Grave is well, the thirteenth and final book in the Charley Davidson series. It is the final installment in a story that began thirteen books ago so newbies put down the book and back away. The one you are after is the white one with the word ‘First’ and ‘Grave’ on it.
The last book ended on a shocker. We all gasped when Charley was given a totally impossible choice, but, she’s Charley so it was no choice at all. She broke the rules to save some one dear and paid the consequences. Now, she’s back and finds herself with her usual frenzied to-do list: solve a few mysteries, avoid a few homicidal demons, negotiate some big-time family secrets, and stop the end of the world in three days. Nothing to it as long as Bunny her Bunn Coffee Maker keeps the liquid elixir coming.
I really do not want to spoiler anything for those who are at the height of anticipation for this book so this will be more about my impressions and a few non-specific highlights. First of all, I appreciated the the last book allowed for time with the whole gang to hug, wrap up last times, and say their good-byes for the readers.
The reunion was great and everyone had their part to play to help Charley.
There are some absolutely caliente delectable moments for Charley and Reyes.
The action and excitement never quits as Charley tracks down key facts that will lead her to the solution for their big problem.
I’m still somewhat upended about some of the surprise plot choices. Not sure how I feel about one or two of them and will have to give that some time to percolate whether I liked it or not. These are not negative niggles so much as I got taken by surprise and need to process.
Okay, one niggle. That last line of the book. Seriously? It was sort of fun, but now I will exsanguinate slowly until Beep’s stories begin and I get the answer to the burning question. Kidding. It wasn’t that huge of a cliffie, but I am pretty curious now.
So, my fellow Charley Davidson enthusiasts, this was a solid and sensational read. I do have a case of last book depression. No, I don’t know for sure if there will be a new season, but I’m hanging to that hope hard. For those who have not picked these up yet, I can highly recommend them for Urban Fantasy fans who also enjoy colorful characters, clever mysteries, and a nice slow burn romance and series plot.
Let’s see… we always knew Beep would be getting books and the series would end. To be honest, I was disappointed about this fact at first. I felt Reyes and Charley’s relationship progressed rather fast, despite the fact it took quite a few books before engagement, pregnancy, marriage, and then giving birth. Once that happened, I was not looking forward to this series ending to make room for Beep’s books.
Why?
Because I’ve never been a fan of the ‘kids’ getting their stories told. I’ll read these books from my favorite authors, but it’s usually just not the same to me and I enjoy them a lot less.
Even so, this ending…. I can’ t say much without giving it away, but that isn’t a happy ending at all, or even a happy ending for now, or anything.
That’s why I’m disappointed!
Love this entire series
Love the characters. Will miss them so much!!
Wow!!! After 13 books, this is how it ends? Really underwhelming and disappointing. As much as I have loved the Charley Davidson series, the last two books were not my fave. So much I didn’t like about this book but some of it was ok. That’s the best I can say.
Loved the entire series! Characters are very well thought out. At times it is hilarious.
This was not the ending I was expecting but it was still a good ending. I am sad to see this series end but excited to for the spin-off series.
This is a series I hated to see end. The characters are wonderful and always surprising in what they do. I advise starting at the beginning of the series. I really hope it is revived or continued. I was always looking for the next book. I have the whole series except the 13th. That I got from the library.
I have loved each and every book in this series. I, like everyone else, is sad to see it end. I’m wishing really hard that there will be a follow up to this series. That very last line in the book makes me very very hopeful. AMAZING!!! I don’t know why it took me so long to read this series. I’m so glad that I finally did.
Love Darynda. Her writing is so fun and imaginative!!
I absolutely love Darynda Jones’s character, Charlie Davidson! I read all of the series and knowing this was the last one, had me in tears! Couldn’t stop listening!!!
I loved this series and wish it hadn’t ended. Hopefully there will be a spin-off book. If you like Ilona Andrews, Charmaine Harris, or Kim Harrison, you’ll like this urban fantasy series.
I enjoyed them all.
Love this whole series!
I love this series, sorry to see it end. I miss the characters. They felt like friends.
I only read a handful of paranormal authors, but I never miss a book by the Divine Ms. D, aka, Darynda Jones. Reading 13th Grave was bittersweet. I’ve followed this series from the beginning because it’s so original, so captivating, and so darned GOOD. Charley Davidson is a hoot, and Reyes…well, what can I say? He’s just plain sexy as sin. The last book in this series didn’t disappoint. It ended with such a creative and unexpected twist that it left me wanting more yet so fulfilled at the same time because of the happy, unusual way ended. And it left an opening for a spoon off series for Beep. I hope there is one! Don’t miss this book! Or the entire series for that matter!
I don’t want it to end =(
Not gonna lie, I will miss this series so hard!!! Thank you Darynda Jones for a wonderful ending for the Charlie Davidson series, so many questions answered with heartbreaking moments and hopefully (fingers cross) the start of new beginnings…Where’s Osh?
