In the fourth novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series featuring everyone’s favorite wizard for hire, Harry Dresden is suckered into the tangled—and dangerous—affairs of Faerie…Ever since his girlfriend left town to deal with her newly acquired taste for blood, Harry Dresden has been down and out in Chicago. He can’t pay his rent. He’s alienating his friends. He can’t even recall the … He can’t even recall the last time he took a shower. The only professional wizard in the phone book has become a desperate man.
And just when it seems things can’t get any worse, in saunters the Winter Queen of Faerie. She has an offer Harry can’t refuse if he wants to free himself of the supernatural hold his faerie godmother has over him—and hopefully end his run of bad luck. All he has to do is find out who murdered the Summer Queen’s right-hand man, the Summer Knight, and clear the Winter Queen’s name.
It seems simple enough, but Harry knows better than to get caught in the middle of faerie politics. Until he finds out that the fate of the entire world rests on his solving this case. No pressure or anything…

With the disappearance of Harry’s girlfriend from the books as she deals with her vampire issue, Butcher brings back some favorites to be Harry’s sidekicks. Billy the werewolf and the Alphas were perfect for this war between the fairy courts. Add in the changlings, and it’s Butcher at his best.
Cozy readers will have to love paranormal for this series because it’s in your face awesomeness. And they’ll find easter eggs to make them chuckle throughout the book, including Harry’s battle cry in the final scene.
Wow. Is all I can say while we get further and further into the Dresden world. Things are really picking up and things are getting complicated as well, not only for Harry but for us that are following him on his never ending journey.
There is not much I can say without spoiling it so I will again try to just make it short and sweet.
One big thing besides the Susan issue and the consequences from last book is happening to Harry. Quiet the twist as the past haunts Harry in a unexpected way. I’m really looking forwad to learn and hear more but hope it will not take over the whole story arc, but I doubt it.
Harry really has his hands full this book. We meet the council and of course he is in trouble with them as mentioned before. He has to proof himself. That sounds easier that done as now things get mixed up with the fairies. Fairies and other creatures are a big part of this book and we learn a lot more about the Never-never (?!) and also the faries and their politics.
I still if not even more love the friendship between Harry and Murphy. I love their dynamic and hope it will never be more than friends. Also the next time the meet in Wal mart I want in.
Susan, we don’t get a lot of her and while a lot of about her we don’t see her all that much and I must say I really missed her.
The same goes with Michael, we don’t get him this book but I’m really hoping we get him back.
Bob and Toot are just the best. Tho I must say Toot reminds me a lot of Jenks from “The Hollows” series maybe that will change.
Hmm what else can I say without spoiling the fun, OH .We meet Billy and the wolves again and they are actually a big part of the book, which I really enjoyed.
Overall there was so much happening it was mayhem but I loved every bit of it ……… lots of twists, action and of course Harry trying to sacrifice himself for his friends, but also lots of snark and humor along with some heartbreak. So, in short a rollercoaster of a book.
I’m looking forward to the next book, to see how certain things turn out and what trouble Harry can get into next. One thing so far I enjoy is that each book, leaves things open but yet somehow ends peacefully with something resolved and not a huge cliffhanger.
I rate this book 5
Harry Dresden is always in some kinda trouble. Often it is because he has a strong sense of morality, chivalry and right and wrong. What’s not to like. Action packed and creative throughout.
This is the 4th book in the Harry Dresden series. It is excellent. If you decide to read the series you should start with the first book in the series since there is character growth throughout the series. This book is worth every penny of its cost.
I will read and reread any Dresden novel!
I love Harry Dresden! Every book is a new exciting adventure, with twists and turns, seemingly impossible mysteries to solve and messes to get out of. Harry is sarcastic, irreverent, loyal, hilarious, and a total badass!
was it whimsical or realistic? there were whimsical moments. within the ouvre of the story, the actions were realistic. jim butcher is an author of incredible story telling. if his name is on a book, i buy the book-even if i’ve never heard of the book-and it has always been worth the money i’ve paid. his characters are consistent. the story is worth the time to read it. i’ve never been disappointed, except as a reader can be in the eventual story. yes, i’m disappointed that they don’t all live happily rver after, but that’s not the kind of story jim butcher writes. i’m never disappointed in the story!
jim, get your hair cut
This was the first Dresden Files book I ever read and its the reason I’m in love with the series. Harry is at his peak in this book, being his usual witty self, reconnecting with old loves, and just being a general badass! I’ve always had a thing for fairy lore, so seeing it come to life was just awesome.
all Dresden’s are great. read them all.
Jim Butcher writes in 1st person in all of his Dresden series books. The book chronicles the only wizard in modern day Chicago with a window placard that says “Wizard” and can be found in the yellow pages. It’s great and his dialogue is most entertaining. Don’t miss it.
I love this series. It is original with a number of twists.
“Sometimes you get what’s coming around. And sometimes, you are what’s coming around.”
I’m doing a re-read of the Dresden Files and with each book, I’m reminded why I’m so freakin’ in love with this series! If you are a fan of kick ass stories, even if you aren’t a fan of the paranormal, I can’t recommend this series enough!
Can’t wait for Peace Talks!
Really enjoy all the books in the Dresden Files series.
Dresden finds himself saving the world, again. This time he has a sharply drawn cast of characters, wizards, werewolf’s, fairies, Faerie Queens, etc.
Our hero must solve a murder while numerous, magic and mundane, attempts are made on his life. He learns more about his first love Elaine. Murphy and Toot-Toot grow in unexpected ways. The White Council is not as treacherous as Dresden thinks it is. Faeries are not all goodness and light.
Lastly, he finds out he has friends. That is the best part of the book since I like this hero.
Harry Dresden takes on the Fairy Queens in this novel from the Harry Dresden Files. Of course, it is not by choice as he is manipulating by the Winter Lady, the White Counsel all while trying to survive the vampires attempts to kill him.
This is a paranormal saga worth its weight in fairy dust. The characters are some creative so amazing and so engaging that they almost become real. The storyline is complex with a multitude of characters and constant action, yet it flows smoothly and very quickly. Witty, sarcastic and fun dialogue mixes well with the excellent narrative. This book has it all, humour, action, romance, evil queens, brave knight and best of all, magic.
Loved it!!
If you are a Butcher fan, you’ll love this book!
I love Toot Toot! Got a tad bit confused when the issue Harry has to solve is being explained at the end, but I finally got on. There were just so many players switching sides through out!
A perfect page Turner you just can’t wait to see what’s coming next loved it
