NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of the cherished bestseller On Mystic Lake returns with a poignant, funny, luminous novel about a mother and daughter–the complex ties that bind them, the past that separates them, and the healing that comes with forgiveness.“[Kristin] Hannah is superb at delving into the characters’ psyches and delineating nuances of feeling.”—Washington Post Book World feeling.”—Washington Post Book World
Years ago, Nora Bridge walked out on her marriage and left her daughters behind. She has since become a famous radio talk-show host and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice. Her youngest daughter, Ruby, is a struggling comedienne who uses her famous mother as fuel for her bitter, cynical humor. When the tabloids unearth a scandalous secret from Nora’s past, their estrangement suddenly becomes dramatic: Nora is injured in an accident and a glossy magazine offers Ruby a fortune to write a tell-all about her mother. Under false pretenses, Ruby returns home to take care of the woman she hasn’t spoken to for almost a decade.
Nora insists they retreat to Summer Island in the San Juans, to the lovely old house on the water where Ruby grew up, a place filled with childhood memories of love and joy and belonging. There Ruby is also reunited with her first love and his brother. Once, the three of them had been best friends, inseparable. Until the summer that Nora had left and everyone’s hearts had been broken. . . .
What began as an expose evolves, as Ruby writes, into an exploration of her family’s past. Nora is not the woman Ruby has hated all these years. Witty, wise, and vulnerable, she is desperate to reconcile with her daughter. As the magazine deadline draws near and Ruby finishes what has begun to seem to her an act of brutal betrayal, she is forced to grow up and at last to look at her mother–and herself–through the eyes of a woman. And she must, finally, allow herself to love.
Summer Island is a beautiful novel, funny, tender, sad, and ultimately triumphant.

I love all her books!
Kristin Hannah cannot write a bad book. I love everything she writes.
Very real and relatable
Kristin Hannah’s books never disappoint and this was no exception.
I kept waiting for more to happen.
Kristin Hannah fails to disappoint me.
This one wasn’t my favorite, but the characters were superb. I love the fact KH can deliver a tale that could be from anyone’s private journal and make such an impact with it. Of course, there are tears as well as happiness, and each page is a true gem.
Hannah’s forte is characterization, and I adored …
I enjoyed this book. Relatable characters, descriptive, a few surprises
Enjoyed this book and the characters. I almost cried when Eric and Dean had to be separated. A good story about how love prevails in many ways.
You can really get to know theses people. This is very well developed and there are some very neat little clips in there that are very “catchy”. One that really cracked me to a full boat “hahah! came out of spot that you could hear something out of the movie about the Titanic.
Ms. Hanna certainly puts together wonderful stories with believable …
My cousin gave me three for my birthday after the first one I was hooked, nice clean books, love her.
Love Kristin Hannah’s books. This was good but not as much as others i have read.
As usual Kristin Hannah has turned out a wonderful read. The only problem with her books is I’m done too soon. She writes so eloquently about family struggles. No matter how much you love your siblings there always seems to be some issue just below the surface. But when it hits the fan they are always the ones you can count on.
Thought provoking.
Love Kristin Hannah and this book did not disappoint! Loved her characters, the setting, and story line. Read it… you will love it!
I did not think it was as engaging as some of her other books.
Took a while to “get into it ” but then just had to finish it!
Predictable beach read
I love author’s books such as Nightingale and The Great Alone. While author’s main theme was an excellent and relevant topic the book was just a little too much like a romance novel.
I love all of Kristin Hannah’s books that I have read and this one didn’t disappoint.
Great story and exceptional writing.
