Summer by the Sea is a beautiful, heart-warming summer read about sisters, first love and not always getting what we want – but sometimes ending up with exactly what we need.
They say there’s always one summer that changes you.
For Faith the one summer she can’t forget is when she fell in love as a teenager – only for her sister, Casey, to steal her man. Now, at the request of her beloved … Casey, to steal her man. Now, at the request of her beloved ninety-year-old Grandmother, Faith has agreed to a family holiday – at their childhood beach house, where it all began.
Faith hasn’t seen her sister in years but is finally ready to forgive and forget, enjoy the sunshine and relive happy memories. What she’s not ready for is meeting Jake Buchanan – the owner of the beach house – or the long-forgotten feelings he ignites in her.
Can Faith overcome the hurt of the past, rekindle the close bond she had with Casey and make this summer THE ONE to remember?

3.5! I have read a few other Jenny Hale books, I really enjoyed her Christmas book CHRISTMAS WISHES AND MISTLETOE KISSES. I was excited when I was surprised by the publisher with this copy. A story about 2 sisters, Faith and Casey. They are reuniting with their mother and grandmother at a beach house In the Outer Banks. Faith and Casey haven’t spoken in years because of a feud over a man. Can this trip help them rekindle their relationship? Will the new man, Jake, the owner of the beach house, that Faith is developing feelings for, help or hinder this?
I loved the whole beach setting. I absolutely love the Outer Banks. This book made me want to plan another trip there! Lol! I on the other hand had some issues with the main characters. Casey was just not a very genuine person, especially to Faith. The way she was, irritated me. And Faith….there were lots of times I just wanted her to speak up, get angry. Certain situations called for some anger, and I felt like it was just pushed to the side.
Overall, I did enjoy reading this one. There were sweet moments, and I liked reading and learning about what happened in these sisters past that drove them apart and seeing if they could work it out.
I love reading books that tug at the heart, this story was so real with life’s circumstances in the families dynamics and relationships. It was down to earth and I could see and feel the emotions of the characters as they hit so close to home for so many. Thank you for no sex scenes.
Loved it, I have really never been a reader until I picked up two books by wonderful authors and began reading and now I’m hooked…I want to read every book written by Jenny Hale and I already have read several. I read a few chapters each night and look forward to the next night thereafter where I can continue with her stories. Wonderful author! I look forward to new books she may have published in the future.
I love Jenny Hale’s books. Each one is better than the one before and this one does not disappoint. This book has it all – a vacation at the beach has one family experiencing new love, heartbreak and heartfelt memories. I needed tissues for this one. Sophia, the matriarch of the family, AKA Nan, passed along her wisdom and excellent advice to her granddaughters to help them heal a family rift. The book speaks of taking chances and putting yourself out there for love. Taking a risk instead of settling. Faith is forced to step outside her comfort zone or risk losing the love of her life. With her grandmother’s sound advice she takes that step. Beautifully written as always by this wonderful author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this advanced review copy. In return, I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Sister’s Casey and Faith were once inseparable, but then Casey did something unforgivable and it drove a wedge between them. Stealing the boy your sister loves is a good way to not only break her trust, but also a way to launch a lifelong feud. These two haven’t spoken in many years, the pain of their feud too great… but their ninety year old grandmother is about to change all of that. When she requests their presence at her birthday party the girls decide it’s time to go home, and maybe even mend fences.
Between the pages of this lovely penned women’s fiction tale readers will be reminded of the importance of forgiveness, friendship, and family. These two women have been separated far too long, and their wise grandmother has come up with a plan to reunite them. Their reunion will bring up old hurts and bad memories, but it also sparks a few good ones too.
I really enjoyed meeting these characters and watch them find their way back to one another. Their story made for the perfect afternoon escape! If you are looking for a beach read to settle down with this summer, make it this one, it’s characters are bound to take you on an enjoyable literary ride! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Nan was going to be turning 90, and her family was coming back to celebrate. Jake now owns the beach house they stayed at when they were young, and he is fixing it up. Nan has made some suggestions to him and as it turns out he does them and is amazed at how good they turned out.
Faith and her sister haven’t spoken for a lot of years because Faith thought Casey betrayed her by stealing her boyfriend. When they finally meet again, they have a lot of things to think about, work through, and Faith has to learn to trust Casey again.
This is their summer journey, of the things they have to work through, the things they have to do to move forward in life, and they have to take a look at themselves, and find out how making some changes can give them what they haven’t wanted and hadn’t been able to totally get. It is a wonderful story of the family, coming together, and once they open up, see things differently, and take steps necessary to make their lives a work of progress, like the beach house Jake is fixing up.
I received an ARC from Forever through NetGalley.
This was a great summer read. If you can’t get away this summer, this book is a great escape to the beach. I wasn’t sure how to feel about Faith and Casey and mending their relationship. I know sisters share a special bond, but some things are hard to move on from. Jake was a great character and I loved him and Faith getting to know each other. A very sweet read. I received an ARC from netgalley, and this is my honest review.
Another enjoyable summer beach story.
The main character, Faith, returns to the Outer Banks for her grandmother Nan’s 90th birthday. Faith has a hard time reconnecting with her sister, Casey, and gets acquainted with her young niece Isabella.
Prior to going directly to the cottage, Faith stops along the beach road at hot dog stand to get something to eat and collect herself. It is there that she sees Jake for the first time and he sparks her interest. She officially meets Jake, the “handyman” , at the cottage. Over time, he brings out in Faith feelings that she thought would never surface again.
This story is about how important family is and creating memories with each other that will last a lifetime.
Over-all, a nice read. A couple steamy scenarios, but not super graphic. Because I was close with my grandparents and great-great aunt and uncle, I loved the multi-generational aspect of the family around which the book is centered. I also love anything centered around beaches and coastal living. I’d have given this book a 4.5, but it wasn’t an option. I didnt give it a five because I didn’t feel that the main character (Faith) would have been so undiplomatic toward her new crush (expressing her opinions about his business endeavors) on their first date; nor with regard to the stances she took about them when she barely knew him. Had they known each other for longer, perhaps – these stances were at the forefront of the problems in their relationship, which I found a little ridiculous. That said, the book over-all was a really nice, easy, sweet read. The characters were believable…and…there was a happy ending to the romance!
An easy summer read about relationship between sisters. Also unexpected romance.
Good up to the end of book end did not fit book
I thought the characters were very immature and found the storytelling to be very simplistic. If the author had refrained from constantly repeating herself and making a mountain out of a molehill, she could have delivered a C+ English Lit writing assignment with this effort.
Good beach read.
This book had the opportunity to be really good. The writer really needs to work on not being redundant with the story line. Once or twice would have been enough.
