Do you remember the best summer of your life?New York City, 1945. Marjorie Jacobson and her best friend, Marty Garrett, arrive fresh from the Kappa house at the University of Iowa hoping to find summer positions as shopgirls. Turned away from the top department stores, they miraculously find jobs as pages at Tiffany & Co., becoming the first women to ever work on the sales floor–a … diamond-filled day job replete with Tiffany blue shirtwaist dresses from Bonwit Teller’s–and the envy of all their friends.
Hart takes us back to the magical time when she and Marty rubbed elbows with the rich and famous; pinched pennies to eat at the Automat; experienced nightlife at La Martinique; and danced away their weekends with dashing midshipmen. Between being dazzled by Judy Garland’s honeymoon visit to Tiffany, celebrating VJ Day in Times Square, and mingling with Cafe society, she fell in love, learned unforgettable lessons, made important decisions that would change her future, and created the remarkable memories she now shares with all of us.

I truly enjoyed this book. The writing was not sophisticated, but the author’s description of her summer working at Tiffany after WWII was fun to read.
Sharing the lives of some of the first girls working at Tiffany’s was interesting and fun. The story of a college girl from Iowa sharing a tiny apartment in NYC for the summer of 1945 was original. This book also shows her personal perspective of living there toward the end of WW11. Quick and easy to read.
A beatifully written account of a young woman’s summer working at Tiffany’s. It is a wonderful look at a more innocent time.
A lovely memoir of Midwestern college girls in a different world–Manhattan
I enjoyed reading about the life and times in New York during the war. It was also a glimpse into how the wealthy managed their affairs. The girls from Iowa dealt with every day events in the big world of New York City.
Light reading , but throughly enjoyable.
This entertaining, fascinating memoir was published in 2007, but I only just discovered it. Thank you to the person who left it in the Little Library in my neighborhood. I’m not giving this one back! Take a journey back to the summer of 1945 when twenty-one year old Marjorie and her best friend and college roommate, Marty, venture from Iowa to New …
