43 year old Jenny has recently inherited Lakeside Resort from her deceased father, Jax. She is working hard to juggle not only the business, her mom and stepdad who have come to stay for a few months, but also her newly formed love connection with Luke. Oh, yes, and you can’t forget her charming pets, dogs Buddy and Bear, and a miniature horse, Levi!
This was my first book by this author, and I was automatically drawn in by her delightful, heartwarming writing style. This book read fine as a standalone, but since I felt like I missed out on key points of the story, it’s probably better to start with #1. I would highly recommend this one for those looking for a wholesome, feel good, relaxing by a campfire/s’mores in hand kinda read. The descriptions of the campsite were vivid and made me wish I could spend a week there with girlfriends, wine glass in hand!
Location: Heron Lake, North Carolina
I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I have been a big fan of Susan Schild’s work since her initial novel, Linny’s Sweet Dream List. She never fails to deliver a heartwarming story and this book is as enjoyable as the rest. I can’t wait to read her next book in this trilogy.
What a wonderful way to spend my time. Warm and inviting characters. Makes you leaving still wanting more. More please
I loved this book. The characters are wonderful and unique. I love the animals in this series. In this book, Jenny is trying to figure out how to run the resort, grow her business and learn about boats, all on her own. She’s trying to keep her paying guests happy and provide what they may want. At the same time she is dealing with relationships that are not the way she wants them. Of course there are always things going wrong. Then there’s a fun adventure with her best friend and family reunions. This is such a fun book. I was sorry when it was over. I want to spend a vacation at the Lakeside Resort and meet all the characters in person.
How refreshing! A heroine who is actually working! A woman who thinks about more than her nails or how she looks in a bathing suit! Schilds has once again created a woman who is multi-dimensional and one who isn’t counting on marrying a rich hunk to rescue her.
I like that we learn about building and running a lakeside resort along with Jenny and that we get to see occasional wins along with the inevitable bumps in the road.
And when her mother and step-father come back into her life, there’s an additional dimension that enriches the story.
The setting on a small lake in North Carolina rings true. I know because I grew up here. There’s just enough Southern to spice up the story but not so much that it’s distracting or tacky. (Tacky is something no southern girl ever wants to be.)
I look forward to each new book Susan Schilds writes. I don’t know how she keeps doing it and getting better with each one. I’m in line for the third in this latest trilogy!

My Review
I have been waiting since Christmas to read this book. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book after reading and loving Christmas at the Lake Side Resort by this same author .
Susan Schild’s new book “Summer at the Lakeside Resort” is another winner! I LOVED this book. I could not turn the pages fast enough. Susan takes us back to Heron Lake, North Carolina, and to the beautiful cabins that Jenny renovated in the first book of this series. Only now her mother and stepdad have moved in. This is a very heartwarming book with great characters.
After everything Jenny has been through its hard for her to trust and take a chance she won’t get hurt again. Does Jenny learn to trust Luke ?
After doing all the work on the cabins can she find ways to keep resort up and running? Or will this be the end of her dream. Guess you are going to have to read it to find out. No spoilers here.
Oh how I wish this was a real place, because I’d love to make a reservation and go there in real life!
It sounds like such a beautiful place full of great people. And of course i will be all over Jenny’s 3 adorable pets – 2 dogs and a lovable mini horse named Levi.
It was so nice to read a story with characters that are my age. Instead of all of the characters being young, perfect, beautiful, and rich.
If you are looking for a heartfelt read to add to your summer reading list look no futher this is the book for you.
I was sad to once again say good bye. This was a really great read and I can’t wait for the next in the series..could you please write a little faster .
I received a copy of the book from the the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
SUMMER AT THE LAKESIDE RESORT is a delightful quick read and the second book to Susan Schild’s series. CHRISTMAS AT THE LAKESIDE RESORT should be read first in order to follow along. Schild writes about women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s facing real issues in today’s world, and that’s what I like about her stories. This book is fun, romancey, heartwarming and deals with family issues. I enjoy her characters, especially Jenny, who inherits her father’s cabins on Lake Heron, North Carolina, as well as his Airstream camper. While new to entrepreneurship, she’s trying to rev up her business renting the cabins and keeping it afloat. She has a nice relationship with Luke, but he unexpectedly needs to travel to Australia to attend to business dealings, which turns her world upside down. He’s always there to guide and help her, but while gone, he’s not very attentive. She manages to handle things on her own with the assistance of her mom, Claire, stepfather, Landis, her BFF, Charlotte, and quirky campers Coy and Neecy, whose characters I also enjoyed. Jenny manages to grow her business, buys a new boat along with kayaks and canoes, learns how to sail and does all of this and educates herself without Luke’s help. She and Charlotte also take a much-needed camping trip with the Airstream, which they haul in Luke’s huge truck he’s left to Jenny while he’s gone. It’s another accomplishment she handled without him. Even though Jenny is gloomy and pines for him, Schild brings out Jenny’s strong and ambitious woman of today, which I admire. This is a very inspiring story, and yes, women can! I highly recommend this book!
It was great to reconnect with Jenny, Luke and the cast of characters at the Lakeside Resort. I enjoyed the variety of characters with the guests and special groups coming and going.
The story has unpredictable turns and Jenny needs to overcome obstacles. What happens when Jenny’s inexperience with knot tying sets the boat free. She will find friends in times of trials that have the skills ready to help.
There were joys of friends and family with interesting and funny situations. I recommend this as a good summer read.
Susan sent me a copy of her newest book and ask that I read and review it. I have to say, I’ve never read any of her books prior to this one but you better believe I plan to read her books now!!! Summer at the Lakeside Resort is a fantasticly well written book. It draws you into the story and you never want to leave. I anxiously look forward to the next Lakeside book. Enjoy!
This book is as enjoyable as the first in the series. Such and easy read with characters with lives just like ours. Jenny is a take charge person and is happy with what she has. Susan is a great author who writes easy reading books! Love them!
I really liked the first book in this series and was hoping this second book would be as good and have found it is.
Over forty Jenny, has her whole world change, when things happen in her life and she finds she has to roll with all the changes.
She is learning as she goes on what she needs to do to get her resort up and running. Finding ways to get the cabins full. She learns to let others help her and to ask for help.
With the new man in her life, she is learning, like a lot of us with men. Luke shows how much he loves her in different ways that might not be the way she feels he should. She learns she needs to stand up for herself and let Luke know he needs to pay attention to her.
Looking forward to my third visit to the Lakeside Resort.
This is a fun and engaging book with colorful characters who would otherwise have little in common until they share time at the lakeside resort. In keeping with Susan Schild’s other books, you will fully enjoy her sense of humor. This book will take you on an armchair, book-in-hand summer vacation, and as also with her other books, you will feel the hope instilled by her plot and characters.
The second book in the series Lakeside Resort by Susan Schild is just as enjoyable as the first!
Are you looking for a book that the main female character is not in her 20’s? Do you enjoy reading books that at times might have you laughing out loud? Then you need to buy both books in the series and chisel out some time to escape into the life of Jenny and the beautiful Lakeside Resort.
LOVED this book! Refreshing to read an intriguing and clean story with a heroine over 40 who is doing interesting things with her life. Luke is an endearing love interest, the RV camping Airstream trip was a hoot, and Jenny’s friendship with bestie Charlotte was heartwarming. Can’t wit til the sequel!!
This was my second book from this author, the first book was really good and that carried forward into the next book of the series. I love reading about my home state, I always loved exploring it. I love the concept of a woman coming of age making something of herself and striving to make a living doing something that she loved. The characters that come in and out of the resort each have their own stories to tell, and I enjoy getting to know them. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and see where the storyline will take me. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
I love the minature horse character in this book! I won’t tell you his name because I want you to find out for yourself. So clever, and the entire book ties together so many interesting, lovable characters. I’ll be looking out for more in the series from Susan.
Susan Schild never fails to deliver a heartwarming love story with characters who are down-to-earth and so much fun to get to know!
I adored Christmas at the Lakeside Resort (I have a signed paperback copy–SQUEE!) and Summer at the Lakeside Resort is just as uplifting, fun, and informative–at times I found myself holding my breath as Jenny tries her hand at things she’s never done (pull an RV behind a truck, drive a boat, etc.) and these things make the story come alive with reality.
I’m not into giving a play-by-play (you can read the blurb for that) but I can say the story flows nicely, I adore Luke and Jenny and hey, there’s a miniature horse and two squishy dogs! I loved that Luke isn’t your typical romance hero–he’s a regular guy like most of us encounter, and Jenny is somewhat insecure which makes for a wonderful, heartfelt story.
I teared up at the end…I LOVED IT!
Nice job, Ms. Schild, and I’ll be anxious to read the 3rd in the series next spring.
nice people acting nicely, very feel good kind of book. I will read the next in the series. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Cute but predictable! Characters were annoying at times!
Love this series! Enjoy reading about strong women that are independent and not afraid to tackle challenges on their own, but still realize it’s okay to accept help from friends and family. This author is an excellent writer but REALLY needs a proofreader or editor. This is the second book of hers that I have read and it’s very disappointing to spend money on a book that has so many typos and grammatical errors. Author should ask for ARC readers at the very least.
