Ready for more love and adventure after 40? Forty-three year old Jenny Beckett has just renovated eight rustic guest cabins on beautiful Heron Lake, North Carolina. Brand new to the inn keeping business, she is struggling to make The Lakeside Resort profitable. Wrangling guests like The Fighting Couple, persnickety attorneys, and the curvy gals from the Fabulous You Fitness Week keep her on her … her toes. Jenny’s business isn’t her only problem. Her mother and stepfather have just moved in for an extended stay. Startling developments with her possible fiancé, Luke, make Jenny question his commitment to her. Jenny is an over 40s woman who is working hard to make a success of the campground that her Dad left her half completed when he died. Her dad always had big plans but rarely saw them to completion and the campground was just another example. Jenny and two friends worked to finish the cabins in time for Christmas in the first book in the series Christmas at the Lakeside Resort. Now it’s March, the cabins are completed and she needs to figure out how to get those cabins filled for the summer months so that she can make enough money to live on. With the help of her best friend, Charlotte and her contractor, Luke, she works to come up with ways to make the resort successful. Luke is more than her contractor, he is also her boyfriend and even though there has been discussion about getting married, nothing seems to be happening. As Jenny struggles with keeping the cabins cleaned and making the visitors happy, she is having the time of her life.
It’s wonderful to read a book with a main character over 40 who is still working to figure out their life and be successful. Jenny is a fantastic character – sometimes you feel sorry for her as she struggles with life and love and sometimes she makes you laugh out loud. I especially enjoyed how she used goggle to learn everything from how to catch fish to how to be interviewed for the newspaper to how to plant a garden. As she becomes more involved in the day to day running of the resort, her stress level increases until she realizes that it’s ok to accept help from other people.
Note: this is book 2 in the Lakeside Resort series and you need to read this series in order to avoid confusion.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
A fun, quick read. Since we like to do resort and RV traveling this was right up my alley and I could really relate to it. I’d sure like to stay at this one with these fun people
The sense of community Jenny is able to create with her cabins is awe inspiring! Her close circle of friends lending their help & support is simply phenomenal. I’m ready to go spend some time at the Lakeside Resort. I really enjoyed all the characters in this book too. Can’t wait to read about Jenny & her friends next adventures!
My Review of “Summer at the Lakeside Resort
Susan Schild Author of “Summer at the Lakeside Resort” has written an entertaining, and delightful novel. The Genres for this book are Fiction and Romance. Of course, I love the two big teddy-bear like dogs and the miniature pony that are part of the story. The author describes her characters as average people with problems, and likable. The story takes place back on Heron Lake, where Jenny Becket has her cabins. I appreciate the way the author describes the blue lake and wonderful grounds. This is the second book in the series, but can be read alone.
Jenny Becket is still adapting to her new business with the rental guest cabins. She is financially insecure and questions future needs. Right now as the summer approaches, Jenny would like to put a boat and other water equipment on the agenda. She and her friend Charlotte are trying to come up with ideas to get more people to visit. Jenny’s friend Luke, had to leave town on business for a few weeks and she misses him.
It certainly appears that at Lake Heron, this summer will have unpredictable events happen. This is a wonderful book about trust, second chances, family, friends, love and hope. I would highly recommend this book for those readers that enjoy an easy read with a happy ending.
These books are gems just waiting to be discovered. A beautiful read! You’ll want more Jenny stories when you finish one! You’ll find that each book has a well written storyline and well developed characters that make this a very enjoyable read! A+
You must read all in this series as well as the new one Mistletoe at the Lakeside Resort coming on October 25th. These are books written for any age but especially for those of us over 40 !
I just keep my fingers crossed this series never ends as I identify with each of the characters.
Don’t miss these you’ll thank yourself !

It’s 3 AM, and I’ve just finished this book. Reading the final pages was like reluctantly saying goodbye to dear friends. Visualizing the beautiful settings and inspiring ideas was a mini-vacation. Occasional slow spots, and editing flaws kept it from being a solid 5, but it was close.
Summer at the Lakeside Resort is the first book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be the last. Forty something Jenny Beckett has inherited Lakeside Resort from her father. Lake Heron, North Carolina is a beautiful setting for a resort. Only problem is all the cabins need renovations and Jenny has no experience is running a resort business. With the help of friends, old and new, and family Jenny is making a living and is happy. The characters are beautifully written and the story is heartwarming. This is a book you’ll want to curl up with and read from start to finish. I did and I loved every minute of reading. I definitely recommend this author and this book!
Once again Susan has written an entertaining story that keeps the reader captivated to the very end. Her characters are so real and relatable and you feel like you know them personally. Susan’s descriptive writing paints a picture for her readers so real that you feel like you are actually there for every moment. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out so I can continue the journey. Happy reading!
I loved being back at the Lakeside Resort. It was great to see old friends and meet new ones. Jenny has finally got the Resort together and even got a little vac. Luke is back home, and maybe a wedding will be soon. Family, friends and pets. Can’t get much better, or maybe it can. Looking forward to book three.
Delightful!
Susan Schild has woven together a wonderful story in a perfect setting. Her descriptions are so vivid you are constantly drawing pictures in your mind, which is an important element of a book to me. If you enjoy a well developed story featuring strong women over 40, friends that help each other, close families, wisdom that only comes with age and believe in Fresh Starts then you will want to read this book! I fell in love with the Characters and found Jenny relatable in regards to her determination sprinkled with self doubt. Before I ever finished this book I was hoping for a sequel because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these Characters, The Lakeside Resort or the Rescue Animals. I wanted to know what the future would hold for them all. I found myself nodding in agreement with certain passages, laughing out loud at others and simply wishing the Resort was real and that I was friends with Jenny! I’m going to start calling Susan Schild “The Story Weaver”.
As an added bonus in the Kindle Edition there are some links to music and a recipe referenced.
Thanks to Susan for writing about real women who are perfectly imperfect that we all can learn from and be inspired by!
This was a quick and fun read that left me smiling. i love the over 40 aspect of this series and the characters who come to stay at the Lakeside Resort. I was laughing out loud a few times with some boating and canoe scenes on the lake. Such a refreshing book with a great location and great characters! Definitely recommend!
Susan Schild does it again! Each story is such a fun read. These characters are so magnetic and true. If you want a book that makes you feel good look no further because this is the one for you!
Susan Schild has written several entertaining and delightful books including her latest “Summer at the Lakeside Resort.” This is a heartwarming story about 43 year old Jenny who has just completed renovating and decorating eight cabins on a lake with her new boyfriend Luke and his sister. I loved reading about the variety of cabin guests as well as the development of her relationship with Luke. A fast read that I highly recommend.
This is the second book in the series and I can’t wait to see the next one, I am hooked. The characters are very relatable and inspiring in the way they overcome their setbacks. I often catch myself smiling or even laughing. This book makes me want to find this getaway and spend a week or more there.
This book was again wonderfully written by Susan! The characters we met during Christmas are back. Very heartwarming and starting to become one of my favorite series. I wish there was a real Lakeside Resort because I would be there everyday!!
Southern Summer Charm
Summer at the Lakeside Resort is another offering from Susan Schild encompassing themes of family relationships, friendships, love, trust, and business acumen.
The main character, Jenny Beckett, designed a lovely resort, one step at a time, on a shoestring budget with help from friends. Now, she is struggling to research marketing trends that will make her little resort profitable and remain fully occupied all year.
Not only trying new marketing skills, she is boldly tackling new skills like backing a boat trailer; rescuing her loose new pontoon boat that was drifting in the lake; learning how to canoe and fish to teach her guests: and pulling an RV behind a truck on a much needed girl’s vacation trip.
These business adventures involved much encouragement, lots of worry and a sense of relief when each step was accomplished.
My favorite story interests were related to the various personalities of Jenny’s guests. Some guests were pleasantly memorable and some not so agreeable. Jenny had a way of managing all the personalities with finesse. The Lakeside Resort experiences even improved guests’ relationships and personalities in some interesting ways.
I would highly recommend this as a lighthearted summer read.
Relatable and inspirational
Jenny is one of those women you can easily relate to. She has the same internal conversations and pep talks you do, she is sometimes determined and sometimes just plain worn out and wants to give up. She’s also aspirational, in that she has created a little paradise on Lake Heron out of the dream and a few unfinished cabins her often-absent father left her. And who wouldn’t look up to someone who can just whip up blackberry muffins while on vacation in her renovated airstream trailer? Book Two of Susan Schild’s Lakeside Resort takes us further into the world of the Lakeside Resort and Jenny’s life. There is more room for Jenny to step out of her comfort zone and accept new challenges as the story takes us from spring into summer, with the Resort really becoming a resort (boats! yoga retreats! fire pits!). It’s not only a fun read, it’s like hanging out with friends. You get honesty, laughs, a few tears, and lots of good times.
I really enjoyed the second book in this series as much as the first book. I want to go stay at the Lakeside Resort and cuddle up with the two dogs, and Levi, the miniature horse. It was such fun to see all of the different ideas Jenny had to fill her cabins in the off season. It was also fun to see her completely on her own and realizing she was strong and capable to succeed. I enjoyed all of the characters too that stayed at the Lakeside Resort. It was fun watching them emerge, grow, and become better versions of themselves. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
I loved the first book in this series, so I had high expectations for book 2 — and Susan Schild totally nailed it. I think I’ve always dreamed of opening my own b&B-type business — designing something homey and welcoming from scratch and then watching it all come together. Jenny is such a relatable character, and I love how smart she is, and how she tackles problems — and I love her relationship with Luke. Such a wonderful, warm and engrossing read!
