Flying Solo — single parents, second chances and the power of love…Summer at the Lake: *Winner: Award of Excellence” *Winner, Write Touch Readers’ Award” “Award of Merit–Holt Medallion”Veteran NY cop, Rick Cooper, heads to his family’s lake house after losing a hostage negotiation, resulting in the death a child. He brings only … the death a child. He brings only his dog and his saxophone for company. His agenda includes lots of fishing while figuring out an appropriate career change.
Single mom, Kristin McCarthy hears the sound of the saxophone gliding through the night air…a healing sound for her daughter. She begins a search for the person who can play so beautifully. Her high hopes fall, however, when the musician turns out to be a cop. The police fell short when she and Ashley needed them most. But still…if this cop could make a difference…if he can help Ashley…well, Kristin would do anything for her young daughter.
An attractive widow with a damaged kid are the last people Rick needs in his life, and he tries hard to remain aloof. The ladies, however, knock down his barriers simply by being themselves. Fearful but brave, smart but silly. Before long, warm feelings grow between him and Kristin. Feelings that spark potential for a future together.
However, before Kristin allows herself to dream, Rick must prove he’s a man she and her daughter can trust. Can they count on him forever?

Rick was a veteran cop from the NYPD but had a failed experience in a negotiation and wanted to change careers. Kristin had to get her 11 year old daughter Ash look Ashley away from the city they lived in cause of a horrible experience she had gone through. Rick was spending the summer at his family’s house on the lake and Kristin was spending the summer at her friend’s house on the lake just two houses down from Rick’s house. They meet and the summer just become more enjoyable. A standalone with a HEA!!! Very good book!!
Love all Her Books
A very good book.
I really enjoyed this book. The authir took a horrible topic and made it work.
I can feel for Rick. He loves his job but when something goes horribly wrong he needs to find peace within himself. He takes his dog and saxophone and heads for his lake house.
Kristin is trying to help her daughter survive after a horrific attack (Very hard topic). I love the bond and how it forms with Kate’s daughter and Rick’s dog. The dog helps the child cope and start to heal. Kate’s daughter also has a passion for music which helps her develop a close trusting relationship with Rick.
My only dislike is how they have Kate jumped in and catch the man wanted for attacking her daughter (who by the way is armed with a knife). In front of her daughter even. Nope!!! That part almost ruined the story for me. I know a parents love and rage takes over, but a BIG NO on this part wouldn’t happen.
Good read for a hard topic.
Loved this book! Linda is a wonderful writer, she makes the story come alive. I will look forward to more of her books!
Good read. Ended much different than I predicted. Loved the characters. Easy to read.
This is one of the best books I’ve read recently. Linda Barrett takes the tragic circumstances most people never have to address, combines in a ‘new friend to help a young girl address those problems, and resolves both a psychological problem and a legal problem ..,. and forming up a new family … much to the delight of everyone involved. I loved this book … it never drags, has good structure and is fun to read. I couldn’t put it down.
I’ve found a new favorite author after reading this book. I also read True Blue Texan. Her books are inspirational in that good triumphs over evil. The romantic element is done tastefully. What begins as a tragic event ends on a very positive note. I am anxious to read more many this talented author.
Great story base, paced right and with characters that have a great moral compass
6 str book. Awesome read.
Kristen is a single mom who is helping her daughter get through a traumatic experience. Rick is a hostage negotiator who thinks that he must leave his job after a negotiation goes bad. They both meet as they are neighbors at the lake. Rick has a dog and a saxophone. Kristen’s daughter is into music. Can they help each other while helping Kristen get over the guilt that she is feeling?
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Was a great read
Amazingly sweet. Inspiring. A book that makes us feel blessed for the little things in life. And for the people we want to be, to meet… A book to return to. Often.
A wonderful story about a mother’s love helping her young daughter overcome a horrific tragedy with the help of a neighbor and his wonderful therapy canine.
It kept my interest all though the book.I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has ever been interested in this type of story.
Unlike any story I have ever read. Touched my heart.
Great summer read!
It was a great read for a lazy summer afternoon.
I really loved this book. The characters were so realistic and touched my heart.
A good book that focused on the trauma of child rape and how hard it is on everyone.
