Sunnyside is a town filled with witches and other paranormal beings. Sure, normal folk come through, but most of the residents are dyed in the wool supernatural. Sophie owns the Sugar Skulls Bakery right downtown Sunnyside, in the heart of the madness. She and her family have been running it (sort of) successfully for two generations, but times are getting tough and Sophie finds herself thinking … herself thinking outside the box to keep the doors open.
Just in time for Halloween, she starts creating Dead Cakes, which are nothing fancy. Just a little fun and spice and all things (magically) nice.
But when her customers start falling down dead, Sophie has to scramble to figure out just what exactly is going on because she’s the prime suspect. And since she’s not really great at magic, even Sophie isn’t sure if she’s to blame.

Max owns the bakery located in Sunnyside, home to the paranormal retirement center. Max is having trouble getting business, so she charms her cookies with a good luck spell, bringing customers to the bakery. A woman is found dead, clutching one of her charmed cookies. Hope, another local business owner is having some of the same issues and talks Max into helping her investigate the reason they have no customers. What they find is disturbing and dates back to her grandparents time and involves racism. I found it to be a little disturbing but in the end all works out for the good. Great story and hopefully there will be more.

I was very sad to learn my favorite cozy mystery series was coming to an end soon but beyond happy to see some of those fantastic characters in this new series! Sugar Skulls and Suspects is set in the same town as the Sunnyside Retirement series so there is some cross over.
In this story we met a new woman who wants nothing more to have a successful bakery (third generation) and to thrive within her job and life. One morning a women unexpectedly dies while eating on of her sugar skull cookies frightening the community and threatening her business.
With sass, magic a wonderful family and amazing secondary characters this mystery is fun to watch unfold and a wonderful way to spend the evening. I loved the twists the author added and the guest appearances. The way the story celebrated but the culture, job and community added so much to the story.
I enjoyed reading this book and am excited for more in the series. This author has a knack for creating fun and interesting reads and I highly recommend this and all of them. I received an ARC via Booksprout and I am leaving an honest review. 3.75 stars.
Max Aspen is a witch who now runs the bakery that has been owned by her family for several generations. The bakery is located in Sunnyside, a town full of supernatural beings. When a customer dies eating one of her special Day of the Dead cookies, it’s up to magically challenged Max to figure out who is out to close down her bakery. A lovely crossover supernatural mystery. If you have read any of the Sunnyside Retired Witches Community books you will love this! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoy the Sunnyside books so I couldn’t wait to jump into this one and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved how the author brought some of the characters from that series into this one.
Can’t wait to read the next one!
Okay. This isn’t my usual genre to read but I’ve been looking for some books for my kids to get interested in. I always re-read everything before they get their hands on it.
From a mom perspective I am looking forward to my kids reading this and the rest in the series.
This is a cute book, very clean, that has a little bit of mystery, and cute bakery, and a magical component that I think will capture the hearts of kids and grown-up alike. Job well done!

Max and her family usually celebrate dis de los muertos. Sugar skulls, the new name of her family bakery, is one of the seasonal treats she enjoys making and sharing with family, friends and customers
This year, something seems a bit off. Adding a good luck spell to some cookies seems to set off some crazy happenings, mayhem, chaos, and gastric distress
Only by working together with friends, family and business and community neighbors can they face magical challenges and prejudices
Fun and insightful adventure!

Sugar Skulls and Suspects is the first book in the Sunnyside Magical Bakery Cozy Mysteries and includes some characters from the Sunnyside Retired Witches Community.
I loved this book and found it to be a wonderful addition to this author’s series. The characters are well developed and interesting. The storyline has murder, magic, mayhem, and motive along with humour, family, and friends.
I am looking forward to continuing this new series.

Fun new magical cozy mystery to add to your list.
Wonderful start of a new series. Fun for everyone. Magic included.
Curses? Magic? Dislike of people? What more can you ask for.
Bakery has struggled for years in town where witches and other paranormals live. Witch whose has not been allowed to practice but magic is her baking. Another business owner is starting to have problems and thinks the two are linked together. (The why will be surprising.)
This other business owner is from the Retirement series. There is crossover from that series but more to help tie the community together (Sunnyside) in the books. The characters are helpful in pulling that together.
Don’t worry if this is where you are beginning. You have an advantage here. You have a fresh look at all the characters involved and get to make your own judgments of them. I envy you that!!!
At some point you might want to go check out other series for fun.
Love this author and everything she writes (to date).
This is a fast fun easy to read in one day and sitting cozy mystery. Everyone will enjoy it.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Pretty good book. Witches and spells a death and a bakery. Mazine can’t figure out why her customers are dropping like flies. Is it bad luck, someone trying to set her up or is something else going on. HEA.
