The story of the generation of hidden child survivors told through the true experiences of three Jewish girls — from Poland, Holland, and France — who transcended their traumatic childhoods to lead remarkable lives in America.
Only one in ten Jewish children in Europe survived the Holocaust, many in hiding. In Such Good Girls, R. D. Rosen tells the story of these survivors through the true … through the true experiences of three girls.
Sophie Turner-Zaretsky, who spent the war years believing she was an anti-Semitic Catholic schoolgirl, eventually became an esteemed radiation oncologist. Flora Hogman, protected by a succession of Christians, emerged from the war a lonely, lost orphan, but became a psychologist who pioneered the study of hidden child survivors. Unlike Anne Frank, Carla Lessing made it through the war concealed with her family in the home of Dutch strangers before becoming a psychotherapist and key player in the creation of an international organization of hidden child survivors.
In braiding the stories of three women who defied death by learning to be “such good girls,” Rosen examines a silent and silenced generation — the last living cohort of Holocaust survivors. He provides rich, memorable portraits of a handful of hunted children who, as adults, were determined to deny Hitler any more victories, and he recreates the extraordinary event that lured so many hidden child survivors out of their grown-up “hiding places” and finally brought them together.

I learned a lot about WWII and the people affected in different countries and the courage and perseverance of so many in the most dire situations.
Good story of children from the holocaust
Based on interviews with real children hidden during World War II, in order to save their lives from Nazi Germany’s reach. An informative work about an often forgotten segment of that population that suffered so much under Hitler’s influence. Stick with the slow parts for an informative conclusion.
Amazing story about what people did to survive WWII and how it impacted their lives forever
I like historical books about the wars. This one was informative yet sad in parts.
As one who has relatives who survived the holocost this book was very informative and interesting. A time in history I can only hope we don’t repeat.
So, so sad.
Great nonfiction story or the results of the Holocaust.
This was a very good book depicting the horrors of the holocaust and the tragedy of the forgotten hidden children. The author did a great job telling the stories of the 3 girls with sensitivity and bringing awareness that there was another whole segment of the Jewish population who suffered but felt they couldn’t talk about it.
Amazing stories of those who overcame such adversity and still thrived
Very interesting true story. A nazi survivor story we forget about. No torture or death just constant fear.
Well written and easy to follow the story line. Makes one appreciate how much better life is now than during WWII and the years afterwards. So much horrible discrimination.
it opens your eyes to the travesties of war and the spirit of life
How these women survived the Holocaust as children. Because they had to disguise themselves and create new identities, they were naturally confused. They dealt differently with learning about being Jewish, and ultimately they were not just survivors but thrivers. A different perspective on the Holocaust at the human level.
Fascinating stories and insights into the life-Long effects of their trauma.
Interesting perspective on the aftermath of emotional trauma and enlightening bit of history.
This is a book that is not limited to Anne Frank. The ways of hiding and survivivg are many. It is important to see how much each of these people lost by hiding, including some part of their identity and how getting together helped each to regain some of that.
Interesting accounting of a tragic and difficult time in history.
All right all ready. Come on, every worn story line ever written about the Holocaust has been duplicate, triplicated.
Found it a bit bland.
