Lady Sophie Baxter must wed a wealthy lord by the end of the Season, or risk the ruin of her family. However, her father does not have just any lord in mind. He’s set his sights on Simon Fitzwilliam, Marquis of Ashton—a man known amongst the ton for being as cold and aloof as he is rich and powerful. While his frigid gaze and reserved demeanor prove intimidating, Sophie cannot help but wonder if … but wonder if there isn’t more to the marquis than meets the eye. Curiosity leads her to accept the marquis’ suit, and before long she learns that Simon’s secrets are far darker than she could have ever imagined. Darkest of all being the hidden chamber behind a locked door, filled with ropes, restraints, and implements of torture … a chamber her husband has specified she is never to enter.
Yet, Sophie soon discovers that what appear to be instruments of torment are capable of unlocking the most exquisite pleasure. Convincing him to teach her the ways of submitting to his dominance will be easy. Uncovering the secrets of his heart and soul will be one of the hardest things Sophie has ever done.

I enjoy Victoria Vales writing and this book about Simon and Sophie was really a great read. Simon had a dark past and was looking for a submissive woman. He always got what he wanted and it was Sophie. Sophie was understanding and allowed herself to become what Simon needed because she grew to love him. Great character development and a steamy read.
A nicely crafted erotic novel with well developed characters and a back story that gave depth and feeling, making it much more than just a 2D sex story. Well done!
The more I read of Victoria Vale, the more I love
good book . added the sisters story
Fifty Shades of Gray meets Regency England
Submitting to the Marquis is everything Fifty Shades of Grey wasn’t for BDSM and troubled leading men. Victoria Vale’s story introduces the heroine to a life of BDSM. It actually goes over the correct way to handle a scene with a Dom/Sub situation. Unlike many books that make the subs look weak and easily controlled Submitting to the Marquis really goes into the strength it takes to completely submit. The trust between the Dom and Sub. It shows the power of safe words and hard limits. Does Simon’s past play into why he likes to be in control? Yes it does, but Victoria Vale shows how the desire is part of who he is not just what he’s experienced. I loved that this book showed the healing power of a trusting sexual relationship between a husband and wife. Simon was so we’ll written. You feel his journey from seeing Sophie and wanting to be part of her lightness and joy to actually opening up and feeling emotions. Not all of it is easy for the couple there are some dark moments and possible triggers for some people. I really enjoyed how the book shows that there is a community of people involved in BDSM in this time period. Life wasn’t all walks in the park and chaste kisses. Wonderful read. The whole series is great!
This was a haunting story..set in a time when children nor women had much power. The characters were great. The bedroom scenes were very steamy. The story had many twists and turn to it. It was a great story!
What I enjoyed most was the depth of character development and the genuine s struggle that Simon had to overcome and unconditional love Sophie showed in trying to get beyond his past. So heartbreaking at times, but an excellent story.
Very entertaining book
This book was wonderful! Ms. Vale has made remember how much I love a good historical romance!
Great read!
When I read the description for this book, I was curious as to what BDSM looked like in a historical romance. I like the strength our heroine, Sophia, exhibited throughout the book. She was good at reading people, and wasn’t afraid to speak up. In spite of his outwardly gruff demeanor, our Hero, Simon, is quite the romantic gentleman when it comes to his wife, though he’s a little slow to admit that to himself. He has some pretty deep and dark secrets buried in his past, but Sophie is open and sincere which enables her to find things out about her husband. I found her compassionate side endearing. That, combined with her strength of spirit made her a heroine you cheered for, that she would be able to help her husband overcome his past.
Hot!
Quite an erotic story about a Marquis and his innocent wife. It tells of how she discovers his sexual preferences and learns to accept and share them.
The underlying story is nicely written and enjoyable but I suggest that if you can’t handle ‘hot’ scenes, perhaps you should be reading something else.
OK, let me say up front that I can’t write a review of a Victoria Vale novel without feeling like I’m writing advertising copy. And this book, of ALL of her books, this one I can’t write enough good about.
This is the story that started me on a wonderful journey into the world that Victoria Vale has created in regency England. This is the story of Simon and Sophie. Simon Fitzwilliam, the Marquis of Ashton (and yes, Victoria, I probably wrote that wrong, you’ll have to live with it), and his intended Sophie Baxter who must wed by the end of the season to save her family from destitution. Simon has some very dark hobbies and habits, but hides a secret that Sophie doesn’t have a clue about. Simon has been enamoured of her since he first saw her at a party months before. When he presses his suit for Sophie, she is torn. She and everyone else in The Ton think that Simon is stern, unfeeling, and possibly quite cruel. She hovers between fear and attraction, because try as she might, she can’t stop herself from moving closer to Simon at every turn.
And that is ALL I’m writing about this story. Anything else and I would give it away. Yes, there is BDSM in this book – and for a change it is written correctly (note-there is NO SUCH THING as BDSM-lite – you are either in it or you aren’t and Victoria Vale writes it correctly). But if you remember that BDSM is NOT abuse, and it is for the enjoyment of ALL parties involved, you will learn how enjoyable it can be, especially for Sophie.
I never read Regency before Vale – so that period of time I call RBV (Regency Before Vale, duh). Then there is RAV – Regency After Vale. Now I read Regency often, BUT the candle I hold to the pages was lit by Mistress Vale. If you are as good as she is, you too shall have me writing a review that sounds like this. 🙂 Just kidding. Mistress Vale, I love your books, but this one will always hold a special place with me. Sophie and Simon are truly the epitome of two people who were meant to be together.
This is like a Fifty Shades of Grey in the Victorian era but better
Well written although frequently unintentionally funny (example: “…his breath came in short pants.”).
A little too steamy for my taste.
Submitting to the Marquis. Book four in the Scandalous Ballroom Encounters series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. Sophie is the light to Simon’s dark. I loved how Sophie was so open to learn submission from Simon. I also liked that their conflicts did not get dragged out but were resolved quickly. Great adult historical romance, I highly recommend!
Proof that love can heal! An amazing love story with “HOT” sex! Wonderful characters!
WOW! This is a great book!!!!
Great read, characters, Steamy page turner.
I whole Harley recommend this book.
