Concrete. Next to me. In front of me. Behind me. Below me. It mocks me. My prison. My hell. I don’t know who I am. Where I am. How long I’ve been here. Decades? Centuries? It’s felt like an eternity. For all the unknowns, one truth has grown stronger with the torturous passing of time… I wish I was dead. Or, at least, I did until I heard her. She gives me hope. A purpose. Freedom. I follow her, … heard her.
She gives me hope. A purpose.
Freedom.
I follow her, soaking in everything she does and growing more dependent. Never in my long life have I seen anyone so perfect.
Now I just have to find a way to make her hear me.
And being able to see me would probably help, too…
Warning: Recommended for readers 18+ due to strong adult language, themes, and lovin’ so good, it must be magicks.

I love this book. I laughed so hard a few times my husband actually asked me if I was going to be okay. This is definitely going onto my favorites list. Would recommend to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance.
This was my first Layla Frost book and had me questioning how I hadn’t read any of her others. I went in completely blind and am really glad that I did. It was a fun surprise to find out it was a paranormal romance and I really enjoyed the plot line of this! Denny and Nate were super hot. I was super excited to read Juno’s story after this!
I need to first start by saying that I can not recommend this book enough. It absolutely blew me away. This book was original and funny, and the best type of paranormal, the kind that keep you guessing. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite apocalyptic books I’ve ever read. I’m so glad I found it and can not wait until the series is complete.
3.5 stars. This was a pretty good book! Styx is a paranormal romance. This is Denny and Nate’s book. Denny is a girl who had a rough childhood, but recently inherited her grandmother’s house and things are looking up. That is, until she starts hearing a voice in the house. She thinks it must be a ghost or she is going crazy. But it turns out, there is magicks at work in the form one very hot guy named Nate. I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll leave it at that.
I did think this book took a little while to get going and for the world building to set up the action. But once it got going, I really enjoyed it. I liked Nate a lot. He was perfect and he adored Denny. I liked Denny too, but she had her moments where she was a little immature. Still, I wasn’t bothered too much. They make a good couple together and balance each other well. There is a bit of a slow burn. This is a paranormal series and I felt like some of the details about who the characters really were, what it all meant, and their abilities was a little vague, but those questions do get answered more in book two (which I read after reading this book). I did like the writing and the story, as well as the characters and side characters. The series setup and world building is intriguing, too.
Overall, this book was a fun, easy read. There was humor, heat and magic! I am definitely sucked into the series now and can’t wait to read more!
Ok this is a new to me author and I went into it not really sure what to expect. It was a slow burn but I love a good buildup in a book. If it happens to fast then I lose interest. I didn’t see that with this book.
This one took a bit for me to get through, not for lack of interest but I was in a bit of a book rut and this has helped as it was a different genre than I had been reading recently and I was not disappointed. I definately see myself reading more from this author and can’t wait to get into Stoned next. I had only gone in blind to this author and the book content but with the enthusiastic recommendation from fellow book babes I knew I would love this one as they did.
This introduction to The Four is E P I C !!!!
I had a hard time getting into it in the beginning. There’s a lot of background & build up for Denny that was a little tough for me to connect with, partly because it involved her trying to date. I’m not a fan of OW/OM being focused on in stories (it’s all first dates, and it’s a SAFE read in that realm). However, there is a reason for those bits of story line to be focused on at the beginning, and as Denny comes to terms with The Voice, those drop off. And when we get to know The Voice – aaahhhh! One of my favorite characters!!!!
And then I was SUCKED IN and the story wouldn’t let me go! I devoured it! There are so many LOL moments, great “nerd humor”, lots of good steamy moments, and of course the falling in love portion. We also get to know Juno, who is the h in the next book, Stoned. SO EXCITED! We get a glimpse of where her story will be headed.
I also get the feeling that the overall story will continue building through the series, and I’m looking forward to learning more about that & how everything is connected. LOVE IT!!! : )
Well, hell!
Oh wow this book definitly different from any PNR I’ve ever read. First, I laugh so hard for the author sense of humor. Quirky, nerdy weird humor definitly my style. Love the friendship between Denny and Lula. They are that kinda besties that will help other burried a body or sweep the ash after you disintegrated them with a simple touch!
And Nate… Dayuuum I’ll take this man God anytime anywhere! Too delish!
Over all, Styxx is a good start for the series, but I wish there’s more actioan in it
When a paranormal romance comes along to steal your heart and knock your socks off with how good it is. This is that book.
Layla Frost, I love all your books, but paranormal is my kryptonite and you freaking rocked it. Is it to early to profess my book crack love for Layla Frost…..anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller.
Haden aka Denny aka Hellion aka uh, another secret name, grows up with the worst dad…ever. He isolates her and always says she’s a demon, honestly, I have no idea how she put up with his crap. She is one of the nicest people and didn’t deserve that, heck nobody deserves to be treated like that. Luckily her bestie, Lula, is amazing. These two together had me laughing so hard. They are quirky together and compliment each other so well. She also, on occasion got to see her sweet grandma, thankfully. When a sad event happens, she gets her own house and that’s when the real fun starts. The Voice aka Nate (she named him) aka other secret name aka other secret name (can’t give it all away) starts talking to her and he is freaking adorable, not gonna lie, Nate is one of the best book boyfriends, I mean he cooks…even though he was still only a voice, that is talent my reading peeps. Denny kept trying to go on dates and meet a nice guy, some were before The Voice and some after The Voice (none after they were a thing), honestly they were all huge, huge mishaps, but one in particular was just freaking priceless, seriously, I can’t even. Ok, so one of the funniest scenes I have ever read was in this book, and I’m talking, laugh-out-loud-gonna-wake-the-whole-house kind of funny. She is on a second date with a guy and finds him in a “compromising position” and has to call 911…so damn funny.
If you are a paranormal book addict, like I am, then this is a must read….I mean, don’t you want to know who The Voice is..uh, the answer to that is yes, you do. This was a great and original storyline, that had me glued to my kindle. The supporting/secondary characters were amazing, Lula, her husband Chase and Juno, which was also hilarious, were all so amazing. This was a safe read for me, she did go on other dates, but as you read before, they did not go well and at that time Nate was either not even a voice or just The Voice. No ow drama, a little om drama, her ex, but she shuts that down. Two soulmates that find and complete each other, makes my heart damn happy. This was a stand-alone for the couples story, but the larger story will be ongoing. No need to get your panties in a twist, the author promises that “There will be an EPIC epilogue at the end of the series. Promise.”…it was at the end of the book, in black and white. My only statement is…next book please….nowish. I cannot wait for it.
This has a little bit of everything. Tragic childhood, mystery, secret revelations, magic, a little butt kicking action and some romantic sizzle.
This story is about Haden Underwood (Denny) a girl who was raised by a verbally abusive and controlling father, who has told her all her life she was bad and evil. Denny’s only real affection and love came from that of her best childhood friend Lula, Lula’s parents and from that of her Grandmother Eva, who tried to do what she could for Denny while she had her for their brief visits together. After her Grandmother dies, Denny finds out she’s inherited everything her Grandmother owned. The house and all its contents…but before she has a chance to claim her inheritance her father out of spite, maliciously removes all her Grandmothers possessions, including her beloved library of books which he burns.
Denny while devastated by loosing the few good things she had left tied to the happy memories of her Grandmother and childhood still pulls herself together and moves in to the house to start her new life.
Then she hears “The Voice”…. Is she crazy? Is she haunted? Can she keep him out of her shower? Who is he?
I loved this book. I couldn’t be more thrilled it’s the first book in a series…which means more of this story to come. You will love the characters and the story line. Heaven and Hell aren’t what you think… This ones a MUST READ.
5 “A-freakin-mazing” Stars
This is just so good you won’t know what hit you. And I don’t want to spoil the fun for anyone so there’s little I can say without ruining some surprise or other so… this is what I came up with:
A quirky, sarcastic and hilarious heroine:
A sexy, alpha, bossy, possessive hero:
Unexpected happenings and plot twists:
Scorching hot chemistry and sexnanigans:
Whatever you think you want in a paranormal romance, Styx has it in spades. I loved absolutely everything in this story, and it has completely cemented Layla Frost as an author to fangirl after. I laughed my ass off, I smiled like a dork, and I definitely had to fan myself on more than one occasion. The mystery, suspense and intrigue will have you glued to the pages, and every character will charm the crap out of you.
With a great pace, a fabulous set of characters and the humor I’ve come to expect from Ms. Frost, this out of the ordinary paranormal was a complete hit for me and it’s going straight to my top ten books of the year for sure. There is only one problem that I could think of, and that is that the next book in the series is not going to be out next week.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book*
I went in reading Styx blind. Having no ideal what the book was about only knowing that I love Layla Frost and every other book she has written. Styx is amazing paranormal romance ( a genre I usually don’t read). I was instantly captivated and invested in the story. An original and creative storyline that is full of passion, laughter and twist and turns. I tell you! You will love Styx. I believe it’s best to go in blind trusting in the exceptional writing of Layla Frost.
What
Was
That? (fans self).
I suggest that you just dive into this book headfirst. Just trust.
Denny (the heroine, and yes she goes by her nickname for reasons that are explained) has not had the easiest of life, and the outlook on her dating life? Even more …. interesting. Denny is endearing and much like all of us, she just wants her quirkiness to be understood and embraced by her man…but finding that man? She goes through a lot of frogs (and seriously some of the situations are snort worthy funny) before she literally finds the man of her dreams under her nose….
This book was full of surprises, which is hard to accomplish. It is an everyday heroine mixed with a bit of “what if”?
It is written as a what few can accomplish…a believable supernatural story mixed told with realism.

This was such a different kind of book. I absolutely love Nate (can he come to my house?) and Denny. They have a very special connection and their story just flowed so well.
I don’t read very many paranormal romances, but I had to try this one when I read the blurb!
I’ve never read a book like this and I cannot wait for the rest of The Four!
I highly recommend this book!

I honestly can say you can never go wrong with a book by Layla Frost! Every book she writes you can’t but help but want more. This was definitely the case with this book. I did not want to put this book down (unfortunately I was at work when I started it so I had to!) and I want the others now!!
Life for Denny has been so difficult for her since she was a child; her mother had died young, she feels the hatred coming from her father and she is bullied by her classmates. As an adult, she is closed off and a bit lonely, but she was okay so long as she knew her grandmother was out there and she had her best friend Lula. But Denny is dealt another blow when her grandmother passes away and her father commits an unspeakable act. However, things start looking up for her when she inherits her grandmother’s house and something more, a voice, a very sexy male voice she named Nate. At first she was a bit scared and confused, and then annoyed of his endless talking and know-it-all attitude, but there was still something about him that comforted her. And since she also thought she was losing her mind, she starts consulting therapists, psychics, witches and psychic magicians that went pretty much nowhere, until she meets Juno; a kindred spirit. Her appearance changes everything.
As for Nate, there is such mystery around him in the beginning. We really do not know much about him, and actually he really doesn’t know who he is either, except that he was invisible to the world except for Denny and he feels this intense connection to her. These feelings for her causes him to carry out some hilarious antics. Once Nate gets his memory back and realizes who and what Denny is to him, he now knows what is ahead for them all. With the help of Denny and their friends and some not so friendlies, they find themselves embroiled in the beginning of an epic battle.
Even with all that is ahead of them, Denny and Nate find what they mean to each other. Nate’s feelings has been strong from the beginning and once Denny realizes her feelings are just as strong, they were perfect together. The chemistry between the two is off the charts!
This book was just amazing! The paranormal aspect was so interesting and definitely kept my interest. And there were so many scenes that were hilarious! Denny and Lula are awesome together and the things Nate does, I had a hard time not laughing out loud (I was at work at this point and it was not appropriate), can I just say sex swing and the flying dildo scene. I really can not wait for the next installment to The Four series, Juno is very very interesting.
Layla Frost you are amazing!!!
This gets my double whammy heroine praise. Not only was Denny sassy, which I love, but she was also pretty kick ass! 9 times out of 10, I read books for the hero, but Layla Frost’s books give me that coveted 1% of heroine awesomeness.
I’m not going to reveal a whole lot for this book because you get one shot in this series to be surprised and this book is that one shot. You’ll be in the know for the next book. What I can say is this was a super fun book.
Per my mention above, the heroine was highly entertaining. I adored her relationship with her best friend and they had me giggling. A lot. There is some sadness in the very beginning when you learn how Denny grew up but it’s important and it ties into what you learn later to see how special she is.
Our Hero, which I will leave nameless for now, is super hot! He’s unique, a badboy to the extreme but also gentle and kind. He listened to Denny and handled her with care. It’s an intriguing combination in a hero. I could read about these two and never get bored. After learning his history, I am really looking forward to learning more about him and Denny in the upcoming books.
As for side characters, I’ve already mentioned my love of the best friend but her fiance was pretty awesome himself. This is a couple in the sidelines that have the kind of love you want to read in your main characters. Then there is Juno. That chick is crazy and I can’t wait for her book. She is going to spice things up for sure.
I admit, I am left with a few questions but I think they will get answered as the series continues. I can not wait for the the next book!
Oh my god I want MORE! That ending!
So I’m not going to lie, I went in 100% Blind to this book, I didn’t read blurbs or teasers or anything before starting. Layla Frost is an automatic one click, must have it now and devour it as soon as possible author for me so I decided to just let the story surprise me…
And holy wow. I went in so Blind I didn’t even realise it was a paranormal… but I wasn’t disappointed at all. The storyline was unique and interesting with enough questions and twists to keep you guessing. Nate and Denny were super hot and I loved all of the side characters.
I cannot wait for more of this series.
This is the hardest book ever to write a review for because of potential spoilers. This story is amazing, the characters make you love them, the surprise twists are worthy of M Night Shamalyn. I want more! Pick up a copy and read it tonight, you won’t regret it!
I’m not usually a huge fantasy-genre fan, but I’ll now follow Layla Frost into any fantastical world she creates. Styx is an absolutely fabulous start to The Four series, and I’d give it more than 5 if I could. This book took me through some twists that I’d suspected and others that completely blindsided me. Beyond the off-the-charts chemistry between Denny and Nate (and the awesomeness of Nate’s heart and devotion to Denny), we still had the humor that I’ve come to expect from this author, as well as the danger and what-just-happened curveballs.
Denny hasn’t had the best of luck in her life, but that starts to turn around when she inherits her grandmother’s house and “meets” Nate. She finds herself falling for a man she’s never truly met, then falls all the way when she finally does see him in the flesh. Nate, already so far ahead in the feelings of love, is ready and waiting to catch Denny and can only hope that she doesn’t run from him when she finds out just how perfect they are for each other. Thankfully, Denny is able to see the perfectness that she and Nate are together, with a little unintended help from some friends and foes. Add in some crazy best friend-ness named Lula and an awesomely powerful new friend named Juno and you’ve got the perfect group of friends/family to face whatever comes next.
The only sad part was hitting the end of Denny and Nate’s story, because now I have to wait for Juno’s story to see what comes next. We shall see how patient I am with the waiting game.
