This was a fun read. The characters are interesting and intriguing. The story is fast, and flowing. I loved the small town setting of Pelican Cove. I look forward to reading more about the characters in the small town and how it will develop. Leena Clover is a new author to me. I received this book as an ARC in return for an honest review of the book.
When Jenny King is dumped by her husband of over 20 years, she goes to her Aunt Rebecca’s home in Pelican Cove. Pelican Cove is a small sea-side tourist town. Aunt Rebecca insists everyone call her Star, as she is a painter we all know they are a little nutso. Jenny and Star go to the Spring Gala the first family of Pelican Cove, after being hired to cater the event. The food is the talk of the event until a dead body is found out on the beach. Adam Hopkins, the Sheriff of Pelican Cove insists everyone stay until they have been talked to. Let’s say Jenny and Adam get along like oil and water! Especially after Adam arrests her Aunt for murder of this unknown person due to the evidence found at the scene. Jenny will not stand for this, and even though she was told by Adam to stay out of it, she is bound and determined to clear her Aunt’s name! Can the murderer be caught or is this the perfect crime with no one to blame? You will need to read the book to find out how it turns out.
Cute cozy in the small town of Pelican Cove. Jenny is a fantastic cook who came to live with her Aunt Rebecca, who now wants to be called Star. If you’re wondering if Star was once a hippie, you got it. After breaking off a really bad marriage, Jenny cooks in a restaurant called Boardwalk Café. This is a cute mystery so there has to be a dead guy, right? Well this one happens to have Star’s paintbrush in his hand.
This is just a fun, easy read. It has all of your characters present for a cozy setting in a small town. The sweet café owner, Petunia, the good friend, the snoopy ladies group as well as a snooty ladies group and of course, a handsome cop. The characters came alive and the town was described so well I wanted to live there. I thought there were a few times that Jenny seemed a little over-ardent about clearing her aunt, but then I think you have to have a reason for your amateur detective to keep “detecting” or you’d have no plot.
Leena Clover has two series available online. This is Book 1 of the Pelican Cove Cozy Mystery series. Better check them all out.
***This book was provided to me free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
I didn’t like this one very much. The endless arguments and misunderstanding made the book feel slow and difficult to get through. Not my favorite.
fast-paced, I wish it would have developed the characters a little better
I’ve been reading this series. They are kind of who dunit books with a normal every day woman just talking to the people of her new home town after a divorce. She ends up being instrumental in helping to solve the murder cases just by being inquisitive and asking questions. There is also lots of food involved as she runs a diner and is making new dishes all the time. Don’t read while hungry.
Fun read.
I love these cozy mysteries. Another woman showing how strong and resilient she truly can be despite what she feels at the beginning.
Quick easy read. Will probably try some more books from this author
Good read!
Strawberries and Strangers by Leena Clover was a pleasant surprise for me. I’m not sure who brought it to my attention, but I was in a cozy mystery mood, and it hit the spot just right.
I hadn’t been planning on buying the whole Pelican Cove Cozy Mystery Series, but…
Jenny King arrives in Pelican Cove after her husband kicks her out. And her life with her artistic aunt and the group of awesome ladies that take her into their clique is full of unexpected adventure. There is an element of second-chance-romance, but Jenny’s also got a son in college to consider. Of course, if the sheriff’s daughters become friends with her son…
The characters in this book are so vivid and hilarious. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!
Enjoyed reading about people who work at supporting each other and not listening to rumor and lies.
Good easy to read, pass the time book. Not too thought-provoking but tied up all loose ends
Quite a different read but was a good read
The book was okay. The ending could be greatly improved.
I liked the book a lot because even though they had some magic they came across as real with real problems that were sometimes humorous to the rest of us. Just like real life.
Set in coastal Virginia, this book is a cozy with no sex or foul language. I just wish there were some recipes for the food Jenny was preparing for the cafe!
Fun storyline.
This book follows one of the often used devices of cozy mysteries. The heroine returns to her home town after a failure. Surprise! A murder is committed and she solves it.
Great cozy mystery. I never guessed the ending.
