Sophie Harper has a secret. A peculiar one. By the time she gets to the Academy for Peculiars, she’s already killed a man. From there, she learns that the superhuman strength she was born with and abandoned because of means she’s a peculiar – a human with abnormal DNA – yet that same strength alienates her from her peculiar peers because of its rarity. As she settles into her new home, she makes … she settles into her new home, she makes friends with her dorm mates, stresses out about catching up with schoolwork, and starts dating one of the most popular guys at the academy. Normalcy is what Sophie wants more than anything, but she can’t change the fact that she’s different, even among peculiars. She starts falling for her infuriating trainer, a rugged shifter named Will, despite the fact that it’s forbidden.
When she finds out there’s only one other man with her physical strength, she yearns to learn more about him – yet he’s someone everyone refuses to discuss. She starts to realize that being a peculiar means more than just being strong, and that just she shares her ability with her mysterious counterpart, it doesn’t mean he isn’t a threat.more

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
This is the first book that I have read by this author.
This book is a slow start, but once it does start it is a good read.
The book is mainly about a trio of girls at an Academy for peculiars, people with special abilities, Jane, Ellie and Sophie.
Both Sophie and Jane are extra special and need to keep their ability secret. And need training by professors that can help them with their ability.
There are twists and turns throughout, as the girl’s are typical teenagers.
I enjoyed this book, although it just ends, I’m sure there is going to be another book, but I didn’t like the ending that’s why it only got 4 stars.
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Wow!!! This is a gr8story. If you liked the “Harry Potter” stories then you’ll really enjoy this. Because as “Hogwarts” is a school of wizardry, ArckPec is a school for peculiars. The only difference is that this story is about 3 different girls, and not just one person. I really enjoyed reading this story & I’ve read every Harry Potter, so I’ll probably read all of this series as well. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
Stranger at Dark is the first book of the Stranger Chronicles and was great! This book grabs your attention right from the beginning, it is well written, fast paced and entertaining. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
A great start to a new exciting series! I love the different abilities the kids all have. The book has romance, lots of action, and drama. Highly recommended!

This is an intriguing and entertaining story about the Academy of Peculiars students and the different powers they have. I loved the interactions between Sophie, Jane and Elle. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to find out what happens next for the students at the Academy.
The perfect spin on the x-men, Sophie finds out she is a peculiar and a rare one at that. I enjoyed the highschool banter that many of the students had as well as loyalty that friendship gives. The characters and world building were great and kept me pulled in till the last page. I can not wait to read more of this series.
This book was different from my usual books and I really liked it. I loved the characters and their abilities. I loved the way the story was written and a great start to the series. Looking forward to book 2 and I recommend reading.

I really, really, wanted to like this. It started off great, then the foster kid on the run trusted too easily. I liked the concept of this story. I did not like the execution. There were too many POVs without a cohesiveness too them. We jumped around in time a bit. Going backward to show simultaneous thought processes, but it started to cause the plot to wander some. Then there were points where the plot stalled. There was no rising action to culminate at a denouement. Oh, there was a climax, but it came out of nowhere and was not lead up to very well. The bad guy didn’t feel like a big bad and his entrance came literally out of nowhere. It was like following a documentary of someone’s day to day life and then all of a sudden out of absolutely nowhere there is a bad guy/sexual attraction/love interest.
There was also some issues with teacher/student relationships. In all honesty, they weren’t too bad, but they were inappropriate because they are still their students.
I will be reading the next book in the series and hope the author gets an editor to help tighten up the plot development.
Sophie had an awful encounter with a handsy man outside a diner.
She defends herself, and is left with an apparent body, when two men offer her an alternative: an education for those with unusual gifts. Sophie and her super strength are apparently a rare gift.
Her dormmates become close friends, and at least one of them also has rare gifts, which make them and the people around them targets for the unbalanced and those greed for prestige, power or money.
Sticking together they can try to survive and learn, but it seems more challenges lie ahead.
An awesome KU read!

This book is like X-Men meets Severus Snape meets Sheldon Cooper! I loved it! The Sophie and Will dynamics, plus the Jane and Depogare relationship, keep me enticed, and wanting more. I can’t wait to read the next book!
It’s not easy being a teenage girl in the system trying to get by each day, then an accident and a discovery that she’s not the only one harboring a secret, Sophie gets the equivalent of a lottery win. Trying to figure out how to make friends, believe people want to help her and staying on her guard because of the rarity of her ability is not an easy feat, throw In some boy troubles and Soph has her first semester at the Strange school cut out for her. Although written in third person, we get perspectives feom both Sophie and Jane, with some new views at the end that I hope to see more of. Engaging and well written, while not 100% original (orphan girl strugling finds powers and goes to special school) the plot was well developed.
