Storm’s Heart is book two in the Elder Races by Thea Harrison.
It follows just after the events in Dragon Bound which had the death of the Dark Fae King. This storyline continues with the long lost Fairy Princess and Heir to the Dark throne, Thistle “Tricks” Periwinkle.
The first time I read this story was back in 2015. I enjoyed the novel and wanted to return it with the audio vision now that I’ve discovered my love of audios and so this go around (2021) I listened.
Tricks is a fun and relatable heroine who we meet in Dragon Bound. Her bubbly happy personality is put to the test in Storm’s Heart. Her frustrations are expressed in some entertaining ways like a few temper tantrums, but they are with those she loves. It doesn’t feel childish, just right for Tricks’s character and her relationships. We learn fast that she has a hard road ahead and she struggles with finding a balance between the past and looking to the future. Though she won’t have to do it all alone. Fate has put someone in her path who will complement her and help her survive the road ahead.
Tiago Black Eagle, a thunderbird was once worshiped as a god and is as old as time. He’s seen and lived a long life, but when Fate puts one bubbly and irritating fairy in his way, well his life changes. He’s one scary guy, but his hard edges are softened by his vulnerability when it comes to our heroine. We see many sides to Tiago, but one thing is for certain he will do anything to protect what is his.
The romance isn’t an instalove. They have known each other for 200 years, so they have a working relationship/background. You may feel the relationship is a bit mean, but they balance each other. It starts of antagonizing “mean flirting” then moves onto hot and heavy. We got to see vulnerabilities and compromises in both characters. To me their romance worked!
The secondary characters featured previous characters who make appearances or a few like Rune and Ariel who hang out longer. We also meet some new characters such as an ancient and powerful vampire, Carling. The dark fae aren’t left out, but we don’t get to see the court just the delegation and guards.
Narration: Sophie Eastlake did a great job. I liked her voices for the characters. Tricks had that young bubbly voice and Tiago had that dark Alpha. All the voices where pleasant and well done. I do recommend the audiobook for this novel.
Storm’s Heart gives us a nice mix of mystery, action, and romance.
Rated: 4 Stars
A whole new paranormal world that’s fantastic. Does need to be read in order for continuity.
It’s been a while since I read this, but I do recall how much I enjoyed Thea’s Elder series. I haven’t read one that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy, always looking forward to the next release.
If there was ever an opposites attract despite overwhelming odds story, its this one. Tiago is the ancient thunderbird, but he realizes that his life without the lost princess of the Dark Fae is going to be radically different in a very bad way. Nothing like enforced separation to realize that you have been slowly incorporating someone into your life for the last 200 years. Despite a serious age difference, Tiago and Tricks are a dynamite team as they realize just how dangerous ascending the throne will be. I love the amazing world building in this series!!!
I loved this book so much. Not only are the hero and heroine complete physical and personality opposites, they are PERFECT for each other in every way. I absolutely enjoyed the first book in this series, Dragon Bound, too, but Storm’s Heart just hit my ‘opposite’s attract/enemies to lovers’ buttons so perfectly. It is just so much fun. “Get back over here so I can smack you.” “Yeah, I’ll get right on that.”
Review:
I loved the first book in this series. I liked Niniane in the first book. She came across as a strong and capable woman. Sadly I didn’t see that in this book, atleast not as much as I expected her to. She did some really dumb shit, and not just once, no back to back to back. Like the same thing over and over again. Example: she ran away, got in danger, Tiago hunted her down, saved her and bring her back to safety. Then she did it again. And again. It got a bit old quite fast. Like it made me wonder if she wanted to be in danger, did she want to get killed. There is wanting space etc, and there is putting yourself in unnecessary danger.
She also made some rash decisions based on what someone else told her, someone she knew was trying to use her and she believed them anyway. I got that she was a bit hurt but man.
I did like Tiago in the first book, atleast I think I did. We didn’t see much of him. He was intriguing in this book. He really did want to keep Niniane save. He was also intrigued by the woman. He was used to people doing what he wanted so her telling him no really got his attention.
The more time they spend together, the more I liked them together.
Overall it was an oke book, I just expected more.
