In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden’s investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago… And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he’s the best at what he does. Technically, he’s the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business—to put it mildly—stinks.
So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name…
“A great series—fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who’s excellent company.”—Cinescape

Could not put this down. I really like the Dresden Files. I hope Butcher never runs out of plot lines. The stories after this one get more and more interesting.
How many writers can bring you a world where turning the first few pages are like dropping in to catch up on an old friend’s adventures? Excellent craftsmanship, terrific ride.
This book kept me captive! I just could not put it down.
Jim Butcher has but one flaw (shudder, gasp… Impossible! you say). He hasn’t put out a new novel in the Dresden Files in four freaking years! (Oh, yeah… there that.)
Otherwise, this is the cream of the crop of urban fantasy series. They follow Harry Dresden, Wizard Private Investigator (he’s the only wizard in the yellow pages) as he treks through the seedy paranormal underbelly of Chicago. Every wants to kill him–demons, vampires (and there are different kinds to chose from) werewolves, the fae, shinwalkers, the police he works for part time, his clients for his PI work (especially in this book) and his own fellow wizards. They seem to want him dead more than anyone.
Believe me, these books get better and better, and better… #12, Changes is my all time favorite book EVER! So get your copy, sit back and enjoy this, the first in the series. — Alice Bello is the author of Better off Dead, a Lucy Hart, Deathdealer Novel, Min’s Vampire, and Growl for Me: Ferro Mountains Book 4.
I love the Dresden files! Fantastic urban paranormal series. Each book builds on the overarching story line but is also a satisfying stand alone story. World building and characterization are great. After reading several of the books in the series I feel like I know Harry Dresden and Karrin Murphy.
One of my favorite series of all time.
First book of the series. All books follow this story and are great. I have read the entire series

I love this world!
Harry Potter for grown ups…another of my favorite characters and favorite book series.
I really enjoyed this original series. Our Hero faces the same sort of moral balancing acts and decisions about sharing power and responsibility that people do in real life, while being a lot of fun to read.
I own the series and re-read the series just because it is fun, and I like the characters. The stories are original and just keep going—not just one-puzzle and the story is done.
I read this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down! I have been tearing my way through the series like it’s my job (I think I should be paid for reading IMHO) and I’m so happy there are 15 books as of today. The protagonist is quick and witty, and reminds me of my boyfriend, while remaining somewhat mysterious. I’m in love.
Love the Dresden Files books by Butcher… I recommend all of them…
Butcher is a permanent part of my library. He is imaginative and knows how to build a good story.
Love that harry
The Dresden Files is my all time favorite series. The characters come to life. When I’m reading these books I’m 100% engrossed. I’ve read them all more than once. It’s my “go-to” when I need an escape!!
Great book. The series is paranormal entertainment.
Love the Dresden Files series!
Butler is well known as one of the leading urban fantasy writer. This is his earliest book in the Dresden File. I like him as the gritty urban wizard/detective. Then later at about book 8 he began getting involved in The Apocalypse, angels, fallen angels and people who waved crosses and talked about the “real God,” and I quit reading him after that.
