In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden’s investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago… And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he’s the best at what he does. Technically, he’s the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business—to put it mildly—stinks.
So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name…
“A great series—fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who’s excellent company.”—Cinescape

Harry Dresden is the John McClane of the wizarding world! This book series is for those who love action and adventure with detective work all wrapped up in a supernatural package! If you read the first one you will NOT be able to stop until you reach the end of the series!
Storm Front is a great start to the Dresden Files as a whole. It lays the groundwork for who Harry Dresden is, what motivates him, and how his world works. He’s an engaging character that really carries the story forward. I can’t say much more, don’t want to give anything away, but if you want a series were the characters seem like real people with real flaws, that are also good people then give it a go. Oh and there’s magic, and faeries, and monsters.
I found this book fun and enjoyable.
I wish there were more Dresden books. I LOVE this character and Jim Butcher’s world.
Unique concepts. Love the series.
One of my TOP 3 favorite authors and this one started it all for me. Fun, laugh out loud, adventure with an endearing main character.
What a wonderful introduction to the series. Hooked me from the start.
I recently found Butcher’s work and I am enchanted. This is a fantastic start to a series. I highly recommend it.
Read the entire series. Waiting for the next one.
The whole set of the Dresden files is a great read. Each book captures you in a modern day wizard story that is both a fantasy and a mystery story in one.
Jim Buther’s Dresden Files series is absorbing reading and great world building. I wish he’d get off the swords and what-ever battle epics and get busy with Harry again. He’s left a lot of readers sitting around wondering when they will be able to go visit Harry’s world again.
Harry Dresden isn’t your typical private eye. His skills as a wizard make him uniquely positioned to oppose the dark forces of magic in a world that largely ignores the supernatural, even when it’s right in their faces. Harry’s snarky humor is engaging and his small circle of friends and colleagues is well done, too. I’ve read them all and now enjoy them in audio format while walking or driving.
Jim Butcher crates an incredibly unbelievable story in a way that makes it believable. He crafts such a great story with depths and great character development. I started with book #5 and went back and read all the books he has in the Dresden Series. I’m now “Impatiently” waiting for the next book. 😉
Entertaining, well paced and great action!
There are some books when you read the blurb you just have a strong feeling you will enjoy the book-it was like that with The Dresden Files-Storm Front. The story centres on Harry Dresden, a wizard and private investigator (a refreshing combination) who is assisting the police with solving some brutal and mysterious murders.
I loved the cast! Harry can be a badass and very resourceful, with and without spell casting but still has vulnerabilities that add depth to his character. Karrin Murphy who is in charge of the case is a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense woman but you still get a glimpse of a soft side you didn’t think would exist. And she has more cahunas than her team combined. Murphy and Harry’s relationship is the perfect example of there being a thin line between likeability and hatred. I liked the reporter who seems to be as hot for Harry as she is for a story, the bartender who speaks with incredible economy-the man conveys a lot in very little words, often just one. And Bob, who you will have to meet for yourself.
Dresden finds himself in the frying pan from the beginning of the story and literally in the midst of fire near the end. I was sad and happy when the book ended because I enjoyed the story so much I wanted more but Harry was getting himself in too much trouble for my heart to handle.
This is my first book by author Jim Butcher and it will certainly not be the last.
A great start to a phenomenal series.
The first-person narrative is done in an excellently wry style. It’s film noir meets fantasy. EXCELLENT work. Can’t wait to get the second in the Dresden files.
I have read all the Dresden books except Briefcaseso far. I have to wait till the price drops to get it. Love the series.
The first of the Dresden files (original books not the new ones), if you like this one you’ll like the other 11. I know I did.
This whole series is wonderful. The first two may start a little slow but are still very good, by the time you get to the third book hold onto your pants. Butcher takes you on a wild ride. The amazing part is how every book has rising action from the one before.
Been reading Jim Butcher for several years now, and they are still some of my favorite re-reads. Butcher is an excellent storyteller!
