In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden’s investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago… And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he’s the best at what he does. Technically, he’s the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business—to put it mildly—stinks.
So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name…
“A great series—fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who’s excellent company.”—Cinescape

I have read all of Butcher’s books and am panting for more! Great author, great stories!
The beginning of an addictive series written by a very gifted writer.
Great read,Harry’s my new hero
Another great book of the Dresden Files series.
I liked it so much I bought the series.
This book is full of magic, mystery and things that go bump in the night. Definitely an enjoyable book
Having never seen the tv series, this reminded me a lot of Tanya Huff’s ‘Blood Books’. I like Harry a lot! He is down to earth, sarcastically funny, and a great wizard. In Storm Front he spends all his time fighting for his life. The turn of each chapter has you wondering, how will he survive? I especially loved his skull, Bob. Bob is funnier than Harry. I did find it distracting that Harry was running around in sweat pants, cowboy boots and a black duster. Not quite a hero’s outfit. I’m eager to begin the next in the Dresden Files, to find out more of Harry’s past.
Harry Dresden has now become a staple of the urban fantasy genre but this breakthrough piece started it all. I love how Jim Butcher paints his magic in a way that is both mystifying and somehow logical. The whole series feels very grounded and like the noir detective stories that clearly inspired it.
I love this series! Harry Dresden is just so damned lovable.
Fun and entertaining.
Better than expected PI story with dames and hard times in the city … and magic.
Butcher never disappoints.
A very good first book by a new author. After reading this, I read the rest of this series as well as others by the same author. As well as an interesting story line, humor is used deftly to go along with the action!
I’ve only recently begun to get into the “Urban Fantasy” genre. Much of it written by guys, and it’s hard to read some of those books because of the rampant misogyny.
Butcher, on the other hand, has wonderfully strong female characters– good and bad.
He also has very accessible character in Harry Dresden. Likable, smart yet still — and this is important– fallible. He’s not the perfect, all-knowing super wizard.
Nice bits of humor and well-written action scenes. I enjoyed this and its follow-up cover to cover.
I know I’m late to the game on Jim Butcher, but there’s a reason why he’s one of the top in this field.
Really well done, mate.
i loved this book and became addicted to the entire series.
This is the first Dresden book I read, after many recommended the author. I really liked it! I will certainly read more.
If it’s by Jim Butcher it’s worth reading!!! I read all the Dresden files books and once I start one I can’t put it down. Even named a pet Dresden
I enjoy all of Butcher’s books. Well written with plenty of action and well developed characters.
This is a terrific series. It’s often dark, UT with a sense of humor. Very much a classic in fantasy.
This is the first of the Harry Dresden, Professional Wizard, series. The only wizard listed in the phone book is located in Chicago, because where else would he be? The first time I picked up this book I read it cover to cover in just a few hours. Then I sat down and reread it. Then I went in search of the sequel. The characters are well written, the locations are mostly familiar however are also well written without bogging the reader down in the minutia of the authors world building.
If you enjoy snark, wit and action from a well meaning if not completely successful main character then you should give this book a read. And if you like it don’t for get to leave a review.
